I have so many soft feelings about this. It is well known that Wang Yibo is a truly amazing and suave dancer, while Xiao Zhan is more of a singer. During an interview, the interviewer requests to see a dance. Xiao Zhan says, alright what dance should we do? I will follow you, Teacher Yibo. And of all the dances that WYB could choose, he chooses this extremely simple and goofy set of dance moves from a variety show opening song to accommodate Xiao Zhan??! I mean this is the ice prince of dancing. And Wang Yibo doesn’t seem impatient or bored or patronizing at all. He honestly looks like he’s having a good time. And he doesn’t dismiss this just because Xiao Zhan isn’t much of dancer and this is just some silly interview segment. After they do one run through, with Xiao Zhan focusing pretty hard on imitating the moves, Yibo says, okay let’s try it again from the start! Xiao Zhan follows along pretty well the second time and proclaims that this is an exceptionally good dance! Simple and easy to learn. Look at how pleased Yibo looks here. Xiao Zhan then asks Yibo *twice* if he choreographed this! Twice! And he seems genuinely impressed. Which I thought was so funny and sweet, mostly because I’ve seen Wang Yibo choreograph or improvise way more complicated dance moves on the fly. And this must have been the equivalent of a master artist drawing stick figures with crayons for him. But he’s so kind about it; he never ever by tone or word choice makes Xiao Zhan feel bad about not being as good at dancing. The first time Xiao Zhan asks if he choreographed that with a tone of wonder, Yibo just gives him a thumbs up and banters with him. (Because Yibo must have thought Xiao Zhan was kidding? Because this is a well known set of silly dance moves from a variety show opening) And when Xiao Zhan asks again, did you really choreograph that?? He laughs and replies no (also look at that arm hold).. and his tone is so… I don’t know.. indulgent and fond and amused. Original interview clip here.

The first time the crew met was at the cafeteria. I took Wang Yibo to the cafeteria with several other producers. Xiao Zhan and Wang Zhuo Cheng had already eaten there, and then we went to read the script after.

The cast invited Hua Yunxia, the acting instructor with whom they worked. Hua graduated from the Director Department of Shanghai Theatre Academy. After meeting Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, the first thing Hua Yunxia did was let the two people interact together. Her description of Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan is a rare confidant in life. Although they are quite different on the surface, their objective is the same inside. So her first job after joining the group was to get them to know each other.

Hua Yunxia: As soon as I came, I let them get acquainted with each other, play together so they will have more intimate feelings. I will take the initiative to bring them together when reading the script, so that they can talk more and communicate more ©

My personality is a bit… I don’t warm up to strangers easily either. After 1 or 2 sessions, I felt like he’s pretty genuine. After we became closer, we both started behaving wildly and illogically.
