They didn't do the joining for anything romantic.

They did it to save Kieran's life. Because Isbeth and Callum cursed him. Isbeth claimed she'd lift it but we cant really trust her now can we? He was going to die. Reaver told them there's a chance of saving him by the joining. Which he honestly thought they were joined already.

Anyway the Joining wasn't for romantic implications it was to save a friend.
