it’s a minor detail, in the grand scheme of the many things that make the Balance arc just work — but for what it’s worth, the reveal that Magnus used to be a Red Robe is just perfectly timed.
earlier in the episode, you’ve got this scene that’s vaguely emotional but mostly perplexing on your first listen. the only known Red Robe is breaking down, both emotionally and literally, because THB say they don’t trust him — and that’s incredibly weird behavior, coming from the then-presumed big bad! you’d think he was stalking THB simply because they were reclaiming the Grand Relics, not because of who they were as people or how they felt about him, but then why would he care so much about what they think of him? why would he sound so heartbroken?
it’s a jarring scene that comes almost completely out of nowhere, and offers no immediate explanation… but at the end of the same episode, we learn an even more jarring fact about Magnus, and if you think through the events of the episode again, things immediately click. the Red Robe’s distress hits harder, even, once you realize the context. one of his closest companions no longer trusts him, and when he’s confronted with that knowledge, the Red Robe can hardly bear to carry on with everything he’s been working for.
so shoutouts to the Eleventh Hour, I guess, for really making me want to hug a lich with just one episode.

interesting how Barry’s main pre-Starblaster flaw was hiding in isolated study to learn about the world without ever experiencing it or forming meaningful bonds, and though he reinvented and redeemed himself throughout the Stolen Century to become The Lover, as soon as the century ended he still felt forced to lapse right back into hiding in caves and keeping his distance from his family for a decade. and by interesting, I do mean it punches me in the gut every single day.

cracker barrel arson for the ask meme
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: First image is a drawing of Lup, an elven woman, standing in the interior of a burning Cracker Barrel Resturaunt. The background is a muted photo. She is holding a tank of gasoline and is in the midst of pouring it onto the floor. The caption on the image reads, "Date a boy who forgives you for your past. Date a boy who disregards your Cracker Barrel arson charge." The second image is another perspective of Lup, still pouring gas into the raging fire. Standing behind her in an open doorway, is Barry, a human man. He appears to be acting as a lookout. The caption reads, "Date a boy who was your accomplice in the Cracker Barrel arson." End ID]
some words of advice from Lup. Based off of this post

taako’s only mistake was asking if the seventh relic was love the whole time. if he’d asked if the Red Robe was love the whole time instead, then he would’ve been onto something

taako is the kind of guy to fake his death for a prank but barry is the kind of guy to die for real for a prank. both of them make a scene at their own funerals though

after the crew invents the interplanar travel belts, Barry breaks into his former lab at IPRE HQ to grab some stuff he left there, but before he heads back, he also replaces all the current occupant’s lab coats with denim ones. just to make sure everyone back home will remember him as some kind of interdimensional science cryptid who could reappear anywhere on their plane at any time without warning. it’s the best kind of prank, really!
he checks back in after a few more years, though, and the denim lab coats (jab coats, if you will) are in circulation around the building? and most scientists working there, especially those that have been around a few years, will insist to a superstitious degree that Barry haunts the building now — if a piece of magitech doesn’t work and rebooting it won’t fix it, that’s Barry! reboot it again while wearing a denim lab coat! it’s the only way to appease his vengeful spirit!
and this wasn’t how Barry thought it would go, but he wanted science urban legend status and he got science urban legend status, so he’s okay with this.

have we considered that maybe the reason Merle and Barry are such dickheads to each other in HTBG is because close proximity to lich magic or cleric magic, respectively, is like. approximately “mild headache” or “looking at something too bright” levels of magically unpleasant for them, but they don’t remember why it’s happening so they’re just like. okay. i don’t know how he’s doing it but this guy’s a douche. i think i hate this guy. i’m going to start the most unnecessarily petty argument about a blood map with him

I like the way Diana Wynne Jones writes about love. While it's not how Hayao Miyazaki potrays relationships, where two people mentally inspire each other to live and grow and mature, it is still something more closer to my heart. She writes relationships in a way where both characters are inherently flawed and imperfect, and that that shouldn't stop them from chasing their happily ever afters. She writes love in a way where it's something that exists for everyone, in different ways, as a reassurance that no matter where you are, or what you may look like, you can be the most cherished existence to someone else.
And that someone else can be just some guy from Wales who will summon demons from hell just because of a bad hair day, will insist he's cone sold stober when he's clearly not, and will lovingly cure your arthritis. Or it can be a fierce woman who will not hesitate to yeet weed killer in the face of her feelings, likes to cut up suits to teach you a lesson, insists that the root of all her problems is her being born the eldest of three sisters, and can bring things to life with her love. And those are perfectly okay qualities for seeking a happy life.

I forgot how much fun it is to create fantasy worlds
I’m supposed to be writing a short story for English set in a fantasy world and now im down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out the religious systems of the two places the story is set in and how it affects interpersonal relationships.

I have a Gideon theory mostly based on how much it would be funny!
So BoE has Gideon's body, right? The miraculously undecomposing body which BoE are getting weird about, possibly partly because Gideon might bear some resemblance to Commander Wake.
And BoE have gone downhill since losing their charismatic figurehead Wake, right? (according to God, anyway, though he isn't the most trustworthy source)
So, what if at the end of HtN Gideon got kicked out of Harrow's body, maybe by Alecto. We're told that spirits are always drawn back to their body in the end, so wouldn't Gideon snap back to reality (heh) inside her own body? And wouldn't that drive BoE absolutely wild?
Basically what I'm saying is there's a possibility of a "She's the Messiah!" - "I'm NOT the Messiah" - "That's what the Messiah would say!" situation and I want to see it.

gideon @ nona: bitch thats harrows body first and MINE SECOND. who tf does this girl think she is😤
Too right. Gideon is most definitely Harrow's designated driver. Whoever that is, even if it is Harrow's precious popsicle girl, she never fell on a spike for Harrow, she never swore herself to be one flesh with Harrow!
She needs to get out, now. Gideon's necromancer is not free real estate.
