Al Hird. Retired fire chief, surveys what used to be a golf course in his backyard, now covered in 8 inches of mud. "If I'm not laughing, I'm crying - and I don't want to go there," he says. "The police don't get enough recognition. Volunteers, Red Cross, all unfailingly cheerful, helpful and empathetic - it means so much. That's what keeps us going. The good news is that I don't have to mow my lawn for the rest of the summer!"
