WHY AMERICANAH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adichie tells a story of a young Nigerian women, ifemelu who immigrated to the United States to attend University. In her journey she struggles with the mixture of her culture and American culture. I’m the United States she is put in the category of black although she is African. She spends most of her time trying to figure why she is put in this black category and faces the struggle of an immigrant. In addition to facing harsh reality of being black in America.
Adichie uses the book to highlight race and racism in America. America big thing on race cause a divide between the people and everyday lives. In addition to comparing global issues that are present in various countries such as colorism. Being black one faces being belittles by other races and not being included in things . Due to the stigma of not being educated people are taken advantage of. For example ifemelu had to perm her hair in order to get a job, often given positions that are inappropriate instead of an actual working paper job. Families of immigrants can connect to the book as the coming to America is the same with everyone. Once one steps foot in America they are put in a category. No one has privileges unless they are white male.

MET GALA 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The met gala. This years theme was CAMP. Camp is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. Kinda sad that the queen of met gala for was not there. I love me some frank ocean but he was giving me security vibes with the Prada nylon jacket and suit. Ezra Miller did that with the pine stipe suit and the make that gave the illusion of several eyes. In addition to the hair change. On to the Kardashian’s , Kim’s dress wasn’t camp but her body is. Kendall and Kylie starburst dou were actually on theme this year. The feathers and the color were really eye catching.
Although there were many bad outfits the theme was camp so some were acceptable. But others somehow managed to not even stay in the camp theme. Previous years looks were out the ball park like way off the one time they could wear outrages fits mannnnn. But lets talk about lady gag sis had a whole show. 4 outfits for a night???!!!!!!

proud immigrant
Tumblr media
The major theme of adichie is how immigrants change or experience in a america or a dominantly white society. Immigrants often have to change in order to strive in America. It hard to keep tradition and keeping up with the american culture. Coming from a mexican household once i enter the door everything i learned outside stays there. When my mom speaks to me in spanish i reply back in spanish. She doesn’t like that i'm always buying outside food instead of hers.  Once one comes to america they are already put in category and cant come out of there. The nly to gain respect from society being a person of color is is you're rich or wealthy but even if it comes to that point society will find a way to bring one down. Growing upon ny using word like deadass and mad al well as cursing is something that defines me. off when I'm at the house I might let a few world with my moms glare hitting me right after.
The book is mainly focused on immigrants and their experience try to be successful. Successful in the country of Nigeria is coming to America to attain wealth. Aunty uju, dike and ifemelu moved to America for a better life for themselves. As a mother Aunty wanted to give the most to her ability to dike. While doing so she struggled putting herself through school and fitting into society. Although dike came as a baby he faces racism just as blacks in America do .Ifemelu relaxed her hair in order to get a job or even be considered enough.

The  n word. A word that makes white people uncomfortable when the origins behind it are brought up. They seem to dismiss that their greedy ancestors brought mass oppression to the black bodies and separation of families. N***** was a name slave masters or the whites gave to slaves or any person of color. Now the word has evolved as N***a a form of companionship between black communities.  In addition it is often used by non black people hispanics between them. But the use of the n word by hispanics has rose controversy.  I feel as if it can used in entertainment for the purpose of the movie.  Movies talking about african americans and whites it is often used and causes tension. To the viewer it rises unwanted feeling that he producer wants the to feel. But then again the white people saying n word in film can influence others to use . That just because they did hey can too. YEt oftentimes younger generation doesn't know the harsh reality of that word. White shouldn’t use that word unless it is used for movies that want a message portrayed or tv shows. White people made the n word to belittle  group of people. Now It comes down to who can say the word. Most argue any person of color , latinos or hispanic have different types of people in their community. There are afro latinos and latinos so, is every hispanic allowed to say it?

The difference between black americans and africans. My mother raises me as much as she can with her Mexican traditions and culture. She doesn't like it when I call myself an American or Mexican American. She often views americans as lazy, stating the government gives them everything and don't work hard for their earnings. As a result changes the view on the views view of Immigrants in America. Uncultured americans wouldn't know the difference, but my good sis Ifemelu was triggered by this. The book may offend whites as they can feel excluded or depicted as ignorant (which they are the truth hurts).  Her friend Kofi who is a Nigerian but has been living in the U.S practically all his life. Yet has to balance being African American or what he would like to call American African. He had to deal with unhomeliness because although he lives in the us their culture is not his . While in America his parents and him try hard to keep their tradition in the house. Furthermore causing a gap between where they grow up and who they are. Ifemelu thorough her start in America tries to explore why she is being treated the way she is.

hair , hair , and oh more hair
So I was reading Americanah and let me tellll youuu. The character Ifemelu describes in detail when her mom cut all her hair off. Can you believe that??? It gets more interesting the reason behind the chop was because of God. Religion changed her mother completely,  started fasting everyday to the point where she was mainly bones. The cutting of hair signified the loss of independence, Ifemelu’s mom was no longer herself she spent her time worshiping god and finding the right church. Her answer to everything was always god. Talking about he’ll give us this that or fix whatever if they just prayed and ask. Ifemelu keeps her hair near and dear to her. It signifies who she is and where she comes from. You can only imagine how she felt when she saw her mother cutting her hair off. But pretty often people end to assimilate to western culture. Chimamanda relfects oh hair in Africa and hair expectations in America. Women of color often tend to relax or change their hair due to the American beauty standards. In the book when Aisha was braiding Ifemelu’s hair she mentioned how rough her hair was. The way her hair was the reason she was tugging hard.  Ifemelu felt angered y this because how else would Aisha expect her hair to be. Ifemelu had to travel to a whole other town in order for her hair to get braided and this is what happens?!?!. Women should stop believing that they need american like hair to be accepted. Or the fact that they change themselves for others and not for themselves. At the end of the everyone should embrace their roots and be proud. Oh another thing stop comparing yourselves to the person next to you. Changing aspects about yourself isn’t going to magically change your race or how people treat you. So put down the relaxer, foundaion shade that is two times lighter than your skin, makeup scissors.
