Narrowing the Field for Grounding Rod
Lightning wants to get to ground. It will follow the path(s) of least impedance to do so.
All electricity, including lightning, performs in terms of flow, in rather predictable ways – governed by natural law. Electricity always seeks the pathway of lowest resistance as its primary route to ground, and will traverse, often destructively, any impediment in its path to get to its destination. Thus grounding of electrical devices and installations is universally known to be critical to the performance and safety of these assets.
Grounding 101
-  “Ground” is the surface of the Earth existing as soil or rock of various compositions.
-  “Soil resistivity” is a measurement of the resistance of earth materials (soils and rock) to the movement of electrons (electric current).
-  Soil resistivity levels are absolutely critical to the performance of grounding rod and the entire grounding/earthing systems.
-  Ground to resistance of any given electrode will vary given the immediate soil conditions the electrode finds itself in (moisture content, specific soil chemistry, proximity of non-conductive buried rocks, proximity to other conductive buried objects and/or soils, etc.), and as a result, each electrode will have a specific resistance-to-ground.
When we set out to create a robust solution for grounding in less-than-ideal conditions, we quickly focus our efforts on dramatically expanding the number of emitting points for current carried by any electrode in any soil condition, all in a compact size, with a manageable footprint and installation depth.
However, LEC’s Patented Chem-Rod solves this issue and much more. This grounding rod uses advanced engineering to achieve a consistent, low-impedance electrical connection with the earth, even in unfavorable and varying ground conditions.
-  It has a large surface area for better connection to the earth
-  The Electrolytic salts continually increase the soil’s conductivity, further reducing impedance and resistance.
-  Another key product – GAF is a combination of organic soil materials, which further optimizes the conductivity of the soil around the Chem-Rod.
-  Our grounding rod comes with a standard removal cap, enabling easy refills and maintenance
The biggest advantage of our copper grounding rods is they will likely perform well for 40 years or more in most soil types. It offers the best annual cost advantage of available materials in most situations.

Know How of Surge Protection Devices
A power surge is a sudden and unwanted increase in voltage that can damage, degrade, or destroy electronic equipment. Surges can originate from electric utilities or lightning or other electric faults.
A low-voltage surge protective device (SPD) limits transient voltages by diverting or limiting surge current and SPDs are a cost-effective solution to prevent downtime, improve system and data reliability, and eliminate equipment damage caused by transient voltages and surges for power and signal lines.
Is surge protection right for you?
Are you experiencing damage to electrical, electronic or communication equipment due to power surges or transient voltages?
Or is there a risk of damage occurring due to an unstable power supply or lightning strike?
If your answer to any of the above question is affirmative, then Surge protection device is a necessity.
When selecting an SPD for any given application, there are several considerations that must be made:
Application – to ensure that the SPD is designed for the zone of protection for which it will be used.
System voltage and configuration - SPDs are designed for specific voltage levels and circuit configurations.
Let-through voltage - This is the voltage that the SPD will allow the protected equipment to be exposed to.
Types or class- of SPD:
Type 1 arresters are generally installed in the service entrance
Type 2 SPDs should be fitted to all the distribution panels that serve critical equipment.
However, the need for lightning surge protection devices depends on numerous factors. Each product is developed by a team of experienced engineers with the aim to solve specific problems faced by industry.
Apart from providing surge protection devices we also give consultancy services such as:
-  Cost-effective lightning and surge protection designs for any structure, facility or site in all industries
-  Proven, methodical approach based on the “lightning protection pyramid
-  Quantitative assessment of need for surge protection via calculations
Our protection systems can be trusted to help prevent fires, structural damage to buildings and catastrophic failure of sensitive electronic, computer and telephone systems.
Since the safety and economic consequences of temporary or permanent failure of industrial equipment cannot be tolerated, protection devices should be installed on critical power circuits.
Installing a lightning surge protection device from Lightning Eliminators & Consultant Inc. ensures security of your company data, employees and facility during an unpredictable electrical surge, as well as ensures continued function of critical systems.

Lightning Safety Tips for the Uninitiated
Technology and knowledge have evolved since Franklin’s time, when the only method of protection was a simple lightning rod. Today, electrical engineers know the need for full facility lightning protection to defend everything from the structure, to personnel, to valuable electronic equipment, from strikes.
But how is this underrated weather hazard so dangerous that we require lightning safety tips as an important safety protocol?
1. One reason lightning is so dangerous is that it's hard to know just when and where it is likely to strike—or how it will behave when it does.
2. Another reason lightning is so dangerous is because of the destructive power it carries. The average lightning bolt carries about 30,000 amps of charge
3. To make matters worse, lightning isn't restricted to thunderstorms - you can't have a thunderstorm without lightning but you can have lightning without a thunderstorm.
When we think of how lightning can hurt us, we often think of a direct strike injuring or killing a person. Did you know that ground current and side flash account for 60 to 80 per cent of all people being killed or injured.
Lightning injuries can also be caused due by:
contact (with an object struck by lightning)
upward leaders
direct strike
blunt trauma
So the first step towards Lightning safety tips is to always remember “When thunder roars, go indoors!” preferably in a house or all-metal automobile.
Additionally:
-  Seek shelter in a low lying area
-  Don’t go boating or swimming
-  Stay away from objects that conduct electricity
-  Disconnect electrical appliances
-  Alternately, if the lightning is extremely close and you are outside; put your feet together, duck your head on your knees and crouch down low in a baseball catcher’s stance.
-  Lastly Follow the 30/30 rule: if it takes less than 30 seconds to hear thunder after seeing a flash, then lightning is near enough to pose a threat
You may think that getting hit by lightning is an improbably unlucky event, but it happens more often than we might think.

An Alternate Lightning Protection System
With the construction of higher structures in lightning prone areas, there has been a significant progress in the quest to improve the protection of these structures against lightning.
A lightning protection system protects a structure from a direct lightning strike.
To do this, an air terminal (or system of air terminals) is placed in the most probable position to capture the direct strike, based on the structure’s architectural design and roof equipment. The rest of the system is designed to safely convey that electrical energy from the lightning strike to ground as efficiently and safely as possible
These are:
Down conductors- They provide the most direct path possible to move the electrical energy towards the ground.
Grounding system – it provides a path for the current to dissipate into the ground and out of harm’s way.
Bonding – this is meant to reduce the possibility of voltage differences that are a safety risk.
Lightning Eliminators highly recommends Surge protection device as additional mandatory equipment to ensure complete protection from direct and indirect lightning.
A Surge protection device is designed to protect electrical systems and equipment from surge and transient events by limiting transient voltages and diverting surge currents.
Did you know there is an alternative way to protect your facility from lightning?
Lightning protection systems have come a long way since their initial invention in 1752. Thanks to new technological advances, modern building structures and evolving standards, today’s lightning protection systems effectively guard our structures from hazardous or deadly lightning strikes.

Why is the Lightning Protection Design so Critical
The lightning threat to mankind is well known (even without considering economic losses) because, in every second there are at least 8 lightning strikes around the world.
Lightning protection design systems help shield the workforce from danger, assist in the protection of equipment from damage and safeguard assets from downtime. A well designed lightning protection system lessens the hazards associated with these risks.
There are three types of lightning risks that should be considered while considering a lightning protection design, these are:
-  An indirect strike which can be potentially lethal as it can strike the person with in the area, while the current dissipates into the earth
-  A direct strike that runs through a metallic object, which a person comes into contact with directly
-  A flashover, which can cause nearby or natural, objects to spill over into the surrounding area.
Thus a lightning protection design should have two parts. The first is the external lightning protection system, which intercepts, conducts and dissipates the lightning flash to the earth. Second, the internal system that prevents flash over within the structure.
However, a system designed in compliance with industry standards does not guarantee 100% immunity from damage. Lightning protection is an issue of statistical probabilities and risk management. Lightning protection systems designed in compliance with standards should statistically reduce the risk below a pre-determined threshold.
LEC offers that go beyond the industry standards and include the following patented lightning protection design products, such as:
Dissipation Array System
Spline Ball ionizer
Spline Ball Terminal
Facility Guard
Transient Limiters
Hybrid Surge Protectors for Data and Telecom Applications
Coaxial Line Protector
The option to install a lightning protection design system is a critical decision for the purposes of life safety, protection of property, insurance costs, and installation expense.  Armed with the right tools and an understanding of national and international standards, an engineering company like LEC can provide a critical evaluation of the potential risks. This evaluation can help the asset owner make the right decision for maximum protection within budget.
Lightning Eliminators & Consultants Inc. will be pleased to advise you on the proper type of lightning protection, minimizing loss and damage of any kind.
