Okay, because as a writer this is so important to me. When you see people online saying media literacy is dead? This right here is 100% why. Maybe the curtains are blue for a reason - they symbolize the character's deep depression or something, i don't know. Maybe the author just like the color blue. Maybe it's both at once! When I write, I'm incredibly picky about what words I use - 99% of the time, a descriptive adjective has some thought behind it. I'm sure this isn't true for everyone, but I'm also sure it is true for many authors.
And either way, if people interpret the blue curtains in a certain way, that interpretation isn't wrong, even if the author didn't intend it! That's the beauty of literature - it can mean vastly different things to different people. And all of those things can be right at once!
Anyways, the assumption that most writing/literature/language is "not that deep" allows people to argue that subtly offensive language isn't actually offensive. There's this assumption that good intentions mean that the language itself is not harmful. In reality, though, language stems from and changes with society; it often shows our subtle biases, or allows for discrimination to go unchecked. Something can be said with good intentions and still be harmful. And corrections made to harmful language don't have to be taken as attacks on morality. You can be a good person, and still use biased language without ever realizing it, because language often has subtle deeper meanings.
This divested a bit from the original point, and I hope it still makes sense. But, as an writer and a published poet, I'm giving you permission to see whatever hidden meanings you want in my work. If it matters to you, then whether it matches the author's intentions is irrelevant. But also, authors tend to be very particular about the language they use, so yes, the curtains are most likely blue on purpose.
“maybe the curtains are blue because the author just liked the color blue” set human critical thinking skills decades back

Ok gotta talk about it.
As a Jewish historian, I fucking hate Israel in ways most probably will never be able to comprehend. I'm going to try and explain it anyways. The central creation myth of Israel is that it is Jewish, and then consequently, that Israel is a part of Jewishness. Its easy to simply state this is false, but fully comprehending this and putting it into practice in thought and deed seems rare to me.
The evil at the heart of this violence predates the recent acceleration of genocide. Israel is a colony, and more than that, an antisemitic fraud itself. After WW2, when Israel was being founded, the Jews of Europe generally did not wave goodbye to their neighbors and head to the promised land. Many were expelled from their homes. Zionism itself, as an action, was a false choice at the time. A mere excuse to place an ally in the middle east, and an excuse to complete the expulsion and destruction of the European Jew. The Zionist Jew is more than complicit in this, they actively seek the destruction and assimilation of all other Jews.
Many fail to realize, and largely because of Israel, that Jews are not inherently white, Ashkenazi, European-descended people. Our faith and culture has an immense variety that is spread all across the globe. Jewishness, in population and volume of culture, exists more so outside of Israel than within it. Israel is for a very specific kind of Jew. The kind that lets Yiddish die, that attaches themselves to European things, that makes themselves and their practices as white as possible.
And they have the nerve, the fucking belligerent GALL, to frame themselves as the necessary saviors of our people. To the Zionist, questioning Israel is to question Jewishness itself. They bake adoration for the colonial machine into their very prayers, and push them on us even as children. To *not* oppress, to *not* kill, to *not* genocide, is to invite death. This is the core of fascistic thought, of course. "Kill them before they kill us." And they KNOW this too, they really do. The truth of that irony does not matter, because as is true for all fascists, the truth itself does not matter to them. They wanted this, they wanted this even before the British saw it in their best interest to give them the land. Any excuse to RETVRN, as the neo-nazis say of Rome, or the German Empire, or whatever the fuck stupid country they want to poorly animate the corpse of. Some select Zionists even *sided with the fucking Nazis* in agreement they should abandon Europe to colonize Palestine. (Haavara Agreement)
My people have proved time and time and time again you don't need a nation state to have an enduring culture. We have protected ourselves for thousands of years without the help of these spiteful, doom-saying maniacs. I was going to post something like this on Passover, but that would be hypocritical. The state of Israel doesn't actually have shit to do with Jewishness. שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְה Vi tsu derleb ikh im shoyn tsu bagrobn. [my best translation] Hear Israel (beginning of a prayer in Hebrew) I should outlive him long enough to bury him. (an old Yiddish curse)
Free Palestine. Donate what you can, they need it right now.

vampire kyle biting jason's neck, not to turn him, not even to drink from him, just normal biting w/o fangs. just as a little prank. a little trick. just joshing around. what's a little nibble, a little hickey, between bros, yk?
he even said no homo! it’s not that deep if he shoves Jason against a wall and sucks on his neck to test his self control. he’s learning to not bite people, it’s a thing, Simon.

Hey, i know y'all love the fact that Vico Ortiz or David Jenkins or Con O' Neil are so vocally supportive of fanworks. I do too.
But.
Quelch the parasocial attitude now that it's early. Don't treat these people like your best friends or ask their opinions on fandom things. It's very nice that they like fanwork but for fuck's sake, try to leave them alone. Don't look for their approval. Have a chuckle and move on.
I saw countless times what happens to approachable crew when they meet with overentusiastic fanbases on twitter and it. never. ends. well.

!! contains spoilers for our flag means death!!
something that happens a lot with queer media is that it feels like it's written for straight people. it always has to be about gay people struggling with accepting themselves, and hating that they're queer. and while this does happen irl, and it can be done well and even be a bit therapeutic, it's not always the nicest to watch. it's a bit of a been-there-done-that, for me at least; i'd much prefer to watch queer people fall in love and be happy like it's normal. i don't need to watch a bunch of homophobia. that always seems more like what straight people expect being gay to be than actually entertaining.
that's one thing i love about Our Flag Means Death. it's essentially a love story about a gay man realizing he's gay, but Stede doesn't have any big, self-hatred fueled, queer trauma realization moment. he realizes he's in love with Ed, and that's that. they support each other and make each other happy, so it doesn't really matter that he's in love with a man.
there's also so many open and accepted queer relationships and characters. you have Black Pete and Lucius who are very sweet, Jim who comes out as trans and it automatically accepted by everyone, Jim and Oluwande who actually get together, Spanish Jackie and her 20 husbands is openly polyamorous and nobody has a problem with that, and then obviously Stede and Ed. we got so much queer rep without any queerbaiting, or queer trauma porn, and only a little bit of kill your gays (although i'm choosing to believe Lucius is still alive).
anyways, it just did a lot for queer representation in one show, and the fact that it's done so well will hopefully do a lot for queer rep in the future as well

Kyle: I didn’t even know Batman was his dad for years, okay! He didn’t tell me! Like, anything! I didn’t even know he had parents!
Bruce: You’re dating him and you didn’t know he had parents
Kyle: I asked about his parents one time and he said he was “born of suffering”
Bruce:
Kyle: Yeah in hindsight that does seem like he was kind of dodging the question
Kyle: Listen, he’s hot. I didn’t think to question him.
Bruce: That is my son.
