“Love,” Reynie said, swivelling his eyes toward her. Their eyes met, and Kate was taken aback by the look in his eyes. It was as if time slowed down just for the two of them. His voice was strangely soft, too, as he clarified, “The answer to the riddle is ‘love’.”

'My world was suddenly narrowed to the three inches between our cheeks.'
Scene drawing of page 68, Mistletoe and Murder. I attempted a Wes Anderson style with this so this is not Accurate to how an actual 1930s Cambridge great hall would look. The colour palette was me winging it.

She cracked a smile. "So what's your poison?"
He sighed dramatically and let the truth tumble off his tongue."Life."
"Ah," She said ruefully. "That'll kill you."

the blackest day // a damina oneshot
amina el maghrabi had never been so hurt in her life. it hurt to wake up. to eat. to sleep. to live.
ever since daisy wells had fallen off the ss hatshepsut with hepzibah miller and drowned, it was like part of her had died with daisy, fallen to the depths of the ocean with her.
every single time she breathed, she could hear daisy desperately shouting for her and then hazel. and then she remembered that daisy didn't come back up. didn't give her that signature cocky smile and throw her arms around her whilst talking about how brave she was.
it wasn't fair.
she had only just realised that she had fallen for daisy. they'd only kissed once.
"you know, amina, i have to tell you something." she'd whispered cautiously, bowing their heads near each other.
"go on, daisy." amina had replied in anticipation, wondering if daisy had finally realised their chemistry.
"i find you terribly enthralling." she said finally.
amina knew what that meant.
she shook back her long, dark hair and touched her lips to daisy's softly, marvelling in the feeling of kissing daisy wells.
it was like pure static had shot through her veins. she almost fainted on the spot. daisy pulled away, a shocked look on her face. but amina knew that in reality, she was ecstatic
do come on, amina. we have a case to solve." she said, giving the el maghrabi a dazzling smirk as she walked off.
and here amina was now, looking at herself in the mirror, a single tear falling down her cheek.
oh, do pull yourself together, amina! you shouldn't be this affected, she thought, mentally reprimanding herself.
but it was useless.
daisy wells was dead.
and amina el maghrabi would never be the same.
"miss el maghrabi?" it was a butler. she held out a letter and amina took it, faking a smile when she locked eyes with the woman.
how strange. it hadn't been signed.
dear amina,
you know who this is. i'm sorry i wasn't able to reach you sooner. i'm sorry that you had to watch me fall off of the hatshepsut. i'm sorry you thought i was dead. i've been on the run recently. it hasn't been pleasant. but do you want to know what kept me going? the thought of seeing you again, amina el maghrabi. i'll be back for sixth form. when you enter the gates of deepdean, i'll be standing right there, waiting for you. i swear. i'd wait a million years if i knew i'd be seeing you at the end.
i'll be standing right there, waiting for you. i swear.
amina was a stickler for promises.
so every night before she went to sleep, she would read the letter again.
because she knew that daisy wells never broke a promise.
