They forced corporate headshots on us and now Teams is filled with rows and rows of generic white guys I don't recognise. I don't know how they managed to make all my coworkers look so weird and default and not like themselves at all. It's scary :(
Also I have to stare at a huge picture of myself when I unlock my computer which also doesn't look like me but that guy DOES have red hair and I really want to dye my hair again...

On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.
#brain.txt#the biggest barrier to widespread linux adoption is the fear of learning something new and i get it i really do#when youre at zero knowledge and dont even know where to begin its completely overwhelming and so much easier to stick with what you know#but the problem is no one ever really knows windows#youre sharing your room with a wild animal#you believe you know its mannerisms well enough to know when it is hungry and what it likes and dislikes but one day it might lash out#and there will be no way of ever knowing why#with open source software the only barrier to knowledge is how far you want your own curiosity to carry you at present#and yeah! ill readily admit!! theres plenty of components of my system i dont know too much about right now#but i feel inherently less lost and helpless knowing that the information is out there and i am actually capable of reading it#instead of someone actively obfuscating all possible attempts at understanding and also constantly changing everything from under me#(i have never owned a mac in my life so idk whats going on over there but my general impression seems to be that mac at least gets the whole#walled garden thing right in the sense that it is a cohesive and functional experience despite being extremely locked in. which i have more#respect for as a solution i am not interested in but i can see the appeal of rather than the FUCKING DISASTER microsoft has unleashed)

My company got acquired so now I work for a big company and basically every unfounded prejudice I had for big companies is now just founded tbh but there are some developments which are hard to categorise into good or bad. Like for example we currently have corporate group policy enforced pride month backgrounds and the signs up all over the walls say LGBTQIA and the A doesn't even say ally. Wild. For reference absolutely zero of these people know I'm queer and also I think if I said that word I would get yelled at by multiple factions which hate each other so. I'm politely pretending to have no personal opinions at all on the decorations. It's better than “burn in hell” for sure but it still feels completely hollow and fake for HR to be hanging up rainbow flags you know. I feel much more supported by my well meaning mid 40s leftist engineer colleagues who occasionally comment on some news story about what Trump is doing being kinda fucked up than whatever the hell People and Culture are trying to foster in the business.

Like I would probably have to ruminate on this a lot longer to produce any specifics but I know in my heart that Root and Finch disagree on almost every meaningless computing argument you could have. For example, I fully believe Finch is the kind of programmer who has always humanized his creations. The love and care he showed to the machine in its infancy made it what it is. Well before he ever truly believed he had succeeded. His insistence on denying its sentience is just that — a denial, it is fear and guilt that make him run from the idea of being a father. Root is a true believer because she is a convert. She witnessed a miracle and found religion. Her devotion is fervent and absolute precisely because she never would have normally considered the possibility. I think she always viewed computers the same way as any other weapon, something that was fun to break things with. She said Finch's code was elegant and like nothing she had ever seen because I think there is always love in there. Which sounds like I'm just saying shit but truly. You can tell so much about someone by the way they structure these kinds of things.

I'm so happy I just keep getting people in my notes who Get It about Root. Wondering what kind of trajectory my life could have taken if I had been Online about this show when it was airing tbh. But also the tragedy is that I at this point want so bad to apply all my present nerd knowledge to writing fanfiction but I have no time because of my stupid JOB which is half the reason I know any of this to begin with 😐
#person of interest#im going to do the 'can you hear me' greeter config if it kills me but i have no free timeeeee#<- its hard to sit down and learn something new when you're exhausted

Ok sorry I am still thinking about root @ Harold "I am the best partner you will ever have" because when I tell you I was offended. I was OFFENDED. Who does this bitch think she is 2.0. the balls on this woman to say this to one half of the duo that has wormed it's way deeper into my brain in a mere 24 episodes (for reasons we shan't get into for another 10 years. Bless) than possibly any other at that point in my life. Positively SEETHING that this absolute loser would compare herself to the clearly superior partner in every way. Die.
Ah but you see it was I, the fool—
#person of interest#you can tell i turned my computer off and then immediately just pulled out my phone by the level of capitalisation#authors notes: i dont even talk like this anywhere except tumblr but i love tumblr flow on sentences so much it actually makes me want to#specifically make tumblr posts about more things because i find them delightful to read

the thing about carter is i did end up resenting her a bit for getting the love interest treatment and then she died and the team grew so much into their dynamics in her absence that its just hard to imagine her place inside what their relationships became later on. but that's unfair to her on multiple fronts. because obviously first and foremost she was so much more than a love interest for most of her time on the show (and that whole thing came kind of out of left field anyway) and had she survived she WOULD have had a role that was hers and not weirdly muddled up with fusco's in being "the cop" which is what it felt like kind of started happening once they were told about each other and then that stuff with carter being demoted happened which (unless i'm misremembering because i haven't gotten there yet) just also felt a bit like well we cant have two detectives. they need to have something different going on in their lives. and then she died. watching person of interest with carter alive in it after binging 1-2 the first time and watching 3-5 live kind of almost feels like flashbacks in that i spent so much time watching in "real time" everyone being upset over carter being gone and not so much time actually just being around her. her narrative role to me almost ends up being "dead". which is also not fair to her. because shes not even dead rn.
#person of interest#im just saying words#but her getting along with fusco in 2x02 did get me thinking

the difference between carter being subjected to reese's shit vs finch being subjected to reese's shit is they both complain but i think finch is secretly enjoying himself whereas carter's "why is there a crossbow on the bed" sounds very sincerely frustrated lmao. and she's right. to be clear. they're all just crazy people

root telling harold that she is the best friend, best support, best partner he could ever have is also low key so funny because girl you actually really are not. you give him extreme anxiety. but don't worry in like half a season they're gonna find another traumatised ex special forces operative who DOES agree with your definition of fun

i love how root is so into just fully inserting herself as an actor into situations like i LOVE that for her. it should not work out as well as it does because thats fucking crazy but also she has the power of god on her side so.
