Author's note
words in italic = memories (aka stuff in the video)
This piece is done in Takumi's POV.
The air outside was crisp and cold, and snow started to fall from the starry night sky. I was at home, enjoying a cup of hot chocolate I made for myself. Dad just came home with some fancy pastry. Wow, I haven't had those stuff in ages. He also had a mysterious USB drive in hand. I was a bit surprised. He never had any job related to electronics.
"Merry Christmas, son," he said softly.
He left the USB which he was previously holding on the dining table along with the cake, then went into the kitchen to get the dishes.
I examined the little gadget in confusion.
"Plug it into our computer and have a look." Dad remarked. "It's a gift for you..I guess?"
He sounded so hesitant, but I still did what he said, and left me mesmerized.
All were videos of our past; happy and sad moments captured in moving pictures.
——————
People say 'Christmas isn't Christmas without presents'. Coming from a single-parent family, the best we could ask for is to be together, always.
I clicked into the videos, one by one. Probably because I didn't really know how to smile, I looked weird in 90% of the videos.
There was that one video which caught my eye. We were going sledding. Also, I spotted our AE86 in the background.
Yeah, The AE86. I still miss the times when our Trueno was on the go.
"Will it snow tomorrow, dad?" I literally asked every day.
"I know, I know, son. You want to go sledding, right? We can go tomorrow..I guess if the snow's thick enough.."
I squealed in joy.
So the next day he took me up Mt. Akina, and had a wonderful morning up there.
"Can we go faster, dad?"  I asked every second.
"Let me see.." He pulled on random strings and tried different positions. "Aw drats, there's no gas pedal on the sled.."
I guess that was the beginning of my racer's career, I was longing for the sense of excitement every time we sped down the mountain.
We slid down the mountain time after time, until I was too tired to walk anymore. He carried me back to the car as I fell asleep on his shoulders.
There was also old footage of my dad racing down Mt. Akina while I was asleep in the backseat because he forgot to stop the recording.
As simple as that. Nothing really special happened, but that was my first time going sledding, which was worth mentioning.

I clicked on another video, and pointed at one of the people.
"Dad, who is this?" I asked him as he was coming out from the kitchen.
"Ah, Yuichi..I still missed the times when he actually looked young," He sighed. "We have all grew old I guess.."
Yuichi was my dad's friend back when he was racing, and also my boss when I served as a gas station attendant back then. This video was about me and my dad having hotpot with Yuichi and some of his colleagues at the lounge in the newly-renovated Gas Station. It looked much cleaner back then.
"So much food!" I exclaimed. "Can we really finish this all? My teacher always told me that it's not good to throw away food."
"It's ok, Takumi. We can do it," My dad reassured me.
After a while, my dad had fo leave for a moment to get the tofu for the hotpot. The screen went black.
He came back and the video started playing again.
"Tofu again? Dad, we've been eating this every night!! I'm kinda bored with this.." I complained.
My dad said nothing but went back to the shop again and this time came back with a bottle of sesame sauce.
"This will make it taste better, son. Try it." He patted me on the head and fed me a spoonful of tofu with sauce into my mouth.
"Oh my god dad, are you a magician?! It's so good!!"
"Umm..condiments make everything better..but you could only have tofu with sauce this time. It's pretty unhealthy if you eat like that every day."
"Yay!! Tofu is the best!!!" I said, without fully understanding what my dad said.
He closed the mouth of the bottle of sauce and smiled a bit.
It's not always that he smiled.

I scrolled to the bottom and found another one. That's probably the only time I have built a snowman in my life. Global warming sure did hit hard on us.
I was rolling a snowball on the floor outside our old house in the countryside.
"Dad, help me push this!! It's so heavy!"
"What's the magic word?"
"Please!!"
My dad grunted in the cold and pushed the snowball for me.
I ran back into the warehouse (yeah we used to have a warehouse) for ornaments to decorate the snowman, and came out with a bag of coal and some wooden sticks.
"Dad, I'm going to build a panda-shaped snowman!! Just you watch!!"
He gave me a slight smile in the distance.
I stacked more smaller snowballs on the big one which Dad did for me.
Just as I was struggling to put the ears on the head of the snowman cause I’m not tall enough, a pair of warm hands lifted me up.
"Oh, daddy, it tickles!!" He laughed a little bit in response. "This is going to be the best snowman ever!!”
Till dusk we were busying with the snowman, we nearly forgot to get back inside for dinner.
“This panda-shaped snowman will stand here and guard our home tonight. Me and daddy will be safe and sound.” I laughed as I rushed back into the house.

I clicked on some more videos and that was basically it.
Cutting the piece of cake on my table, I looked back at how far I have gone. This is my last Christmas in Japan, next spring I'll be flying to England to pursue my career as a pro racer.
Dad, this was a nice gift. I guess the truth behind your mysterious 'cameramen' and suspicious activity on your phone is now revealed then. I remember dad always pulled out his phone and pressed some random buttons for a while almost every meal. I could see them all in one drive now.
I'm really sorry as well; I know my dad's almost always drinking when he's free, and I even got forced to drive. However, if he didn't do so, I never would have so many opportunities, meeting so many great people, exploring different prefectures and mountain passes in Japan.
Thanks, Dad, I'm going to try my best in the UK, and I’ll definitely miss you a lot. Merry Christmas!

Hello @steakrogers !!! I hope I have fulfilled what you wanted (i occasionally go off track, just to make sure that I did nothing wrong here haha) and I of course hope you enjoy reading this!! Word count is 1.0k, not very long, but I hope this has lightened up your day :)
Thanks @initialdsecretsanta for organizing this once again this year, even though it’s my first time joining, it’s been a while since i’ve actually did any fanfiction (well not necessarily fanfiction just written work related to a fandom) writing again lol
Merry (very late) Christmas and best wishes in 2022!
