PROLOGUE

you’re born to a nuclear family in Eugene, Oregon. you grow up in the small apartment over the family business, a small garage with a small clientele; a business your father built from scratch. you never loved the cars or working on them as much as your father or two older brothers did, but you played along. you were preoccupied with your imagination, prone to losing yourself to it’s vast possibilities rather than the task at hand. Your father never got it, at least when you were that young, so you grew up more in the care of your brothers and mother. it’s not to say you weren’t close to him, because you were, but you didn’t understand each other fundamentally.

CHAPTER I

you’re 14 now, and it’s not your birthday when you get your first gaming system. it isn’t after your first game as running back, when ryan, your middle brother, gets tackled and goes down hard. you make the game winning catch, and you’re the new star of the team. it’s none of those things that get you an x-box.

it’s coming out of the closet. your parents had been saving it for your birthday, because they’ve known you wanted it. you worked all summer to earn the cash after all, working for neighbors or family members, only to donate your earnings to a family who loses everything in a fire. when prompted, you just shrugged it off and say they needed it more. it’s not that your parents can’t cope with you coming out, they are religious but they understand, it’s that they’re proud. they know you’ve been struggling with something lately, and they’re overjoyed that you’ve come to them. there’s a large family dinner that night, and the relief you feel, the happiness, at being yourself with everyone there finally seeps in. you’re happy beyond your years.

CHAPTER II

you got good enough to make it big. you finished high school, and football was a prospect but school wasn’t. there was never anything great enough for you there academically, so you turn down the offers. your parents encourage you to find something that makes you happy, and while they don’t understand it, one look at the first check you get from your portion of the winnings is enough to sate their worried minds. you give it to them, and announce you’re moving to austin to work more closely with the team. there’s a tearful dinner and a goodbye, but everyone knows that nobody gets in christopher’s way when he sets his sights; he’s going to make the world his field.

EPILOGUE

while you know you’re good, you’re not the best. you’re humbled by that fact and enjoy your place on the team. you have fun at the tournaments, at heading out of the city, state, even the country! all to play a game you all enjoy. all to play a game you all win at. life is sweet, and although business is struggling for mom and pop back home, you send them almost all of your winnings. you owe them everything, and their support matters beyond any dollar the world can give you.

you spend your spare time playing gta v, this franchise has always been your favorite. when you’re not gaming, or in the pool or at the gym you’re under the hood of a car, you have a few projects in the garage, small projects. you want to take on your first restoration, but you’re worried about imposing on the household. so you’ve looked into renting a local garage for space to work on the side.

PROLOGUE

you play halo from day one, as not even a teenager. you play it with your friends, your sisters, and even make more friends through it. it’s a serious shock when you find out that people are able to play it competitively. you grin, and want nothing more than to be able to do that.

you round up some of your real life and online friends to conjure up a viable team. you all do your best over the years to rise up the ranks.

CHAPTER I

you’re up there. you’re not the best, but boy are you regarded with high praise. “the insurrectionists” feel unbeatable. you make a new friend in your free time, a young woman named larkin. she’s damn well nearly better than you are, and you offer her a spot on your team.

she declines, and makes the vague mention of another group. while you’re disappointed, you still wish her the best. you stay friends, but contact strains.

you see her in person for the first time, facing off against her and her team from “project freelancer.”

CHAPTER II

the rivalry becomes a little more. while you’re generally a good sport, you want to impress larkin. you want to make her envious, and perhaps even regret not coming over to your team. 

EPILOGUE

you and the girl you pine after remain on good terms, though you and her teammates definitely don’t see eye to eye. you’re not sure whether you truly dislike them, or whether you’re just playing up the rivalry, but boy does the anger sometimes feel real. you aren’t an angry guy by any means, but sometimes – sometimes those guys just push you.

you’re starting to get irritated with a certain member of their team, as well...

PROLOGUE

you’re born in lincoln, rhode island as the second youngest among eight children. as the only born boy, quite a lot is expected of you from your father, though you really never understood what he wanted from you. he wanted you to do a lot more active and athletic things, but it really wasn’t for you, despite your incredible, natural strength. you prefer hanging out with your sisters more than the kids at school, who aren’t exactly the kindest toward your brilliance and genius.

CHAPTER I

it’s in your first year of high school when one of your big sisters gets an xbox for her birthday. while it was a gift for her, she’s kind enough to allow the rest of the kids that still lived in the house to play it. they would play a numerous amount of games, while you mainly just play a very select few. one was called halo.

you were 16 when you met church and tucker, becoming an immense light in their lives. you and church hit it off right away, and become the best of friends. you join their games, playing halo with all of them and continually making more friends. you’ve never been so happy in your life.

CHAPTER II

you move out of your family home and into your own apartment just before you start college. of course, the xbox comes with you. you don’t understand it when your sisters start talking about how the xbox was stolen. you share the apartment with two of your dogs, sheila (a yorkie) and freckles (a german shepherd).

nevertheless, you’re proud of yourself. you’re so happy that you get to go to college and continually play games with your friends. at your teammates’ influence you end up starting a youtube channel that shares the same moniker as your gamertag. you don’t make a lot of videos for your own channel, but you love making them for your friends’ channels.

you grow more and more attached to all of your friends after finally meeting them in person for the first time when you’re 18.

somehow, you’ve managed to make even more friends!! amazing!! you’re always so excited to see and talk to them!

PROLOGUE

you live a life not allowed to think of yourself. you’re responsible for the lives around you, after all. your depressed mother, your two little sisters… you have to take care of the four of you, or else you’ll have to live with your dad again. he’s not a bad man by any means, but if you weren’t there, who would take care of your mom?

you don’t get to do it as much as you like, but you adore playing games. it’s the time when you can zone out, and often times keep your sisters entertained at the same time.

CHAPTER I

your mother finally seemed to be getting better. you’re surprised to find out she’s marrying a man that you’ve never met before. he’s the reason she’s so happy now. it’s good, and it’s nice to see her smile for the first time in a while, but it makes you wonder what your purpose is now, if not as a caretaker for your mother and now teen aged sisters.

you feel a distinct loneliness in the months before you’re approached by an elite team of halo players, and are told that you would be a good member of that team. it would mean leaving your small hometown of lead, south dakota for austin, texas, and leaving the sisters that basically saw you more as their mother than their sister behind.

longing for more, you take that chance.

CHAPTER II

if a younger you saw you now, you doubted you would’ve even been able to recognize yourself. the happiness you felt was something like no other. perhaps it was a fool’s bliss, but you’re satisfied with what you have. friends, and a boyfriend! you honestly never thought you would be able to have a social life like this. 

you only wish you were a bit more skilled, like your friends.

EPILOGUE

you think things are still going fairly well. still there are things bothering you. you don’t want to talk about it, but it leaves you anxious over every wrong move you make. occasionally, you cry at night at the mere thought of it happening again. ultimately, you don’t feel like it’s important, however. just help your team win, and things will be okay.

PROLOGUE

you were born to parents with an already crumbling relationship, and you were the cherry on top. When their already tight budget wasn’t going towards you, it funded your father’s alcoholism. It was too much for your mother, resulting in her disappearance when you were 7 years old. You were left in your father’s care, the bruises left on your mother now painting your skin. But it wasn’t long until your paternal aunt became your new caretaker, and thus you moved and lived the rest of your young life in pasadena, california.

CHAPTER I

You were a high school junior when you wasted your paychecks from your part time job to acquire the new game console along with a few new games. You poured endless hours into them, Halo being the one to take up most of your free time. It was a long needed distraction from the stress you had at home, your aunt stuck in a similar financial situation as your parents once did, but she always assured you that you had nothing to worry about.

Like clockwork, you bought each new sequel as it came out, bought the appropriate consoles as the years went by. You spent so much time in online matches you became undefeated.

CHAPTER II

Life seemed to be going your way, you were accepted at the University of Texas, majoring in theater & film. Your roommate is your long time best friend and teammate online. You decide to make your extra cash by streaming your multiplayer matches; the idea of you becoming a professional player sparked here from your ever growing follower count.

You weren’t opposed to it, and the aspect of cash prizes for tournament winners was alluring enough on its own. It didn’t take long before you were in the ranks and winning competitions left and right. It was enough for you to drop out of school, unable to do both. You were a famous title with a strong reputation, up until the freelancers came into play.

EPILOGUE

You were an unmatched competitor, but the freelancers were a challenge. Money isn’t a factor in your attempts at victory anymore; a more spiteful incentive to winning was put in its place. With the help of your best friend, you started forming your own professional team. Although there’s only three of you so far, you have hope that you’ll eventually take down project freelancer.

+ Halo is Isaac’s go to game, but is absolutely in love with thriller/horror games. Dead Space and Bioshock are some of his all time favorite games. (Did he geek out over the fact that the main character in DS is named Isaac? Yes. Yes he did).

+ Isaac primarily uses twitch to livestream his gameplays. He easily gained a following and eventually gained most of his income from there. He started up a Youtube channel for a place to upload his VoD’s and updates/vlogs. 

+ The sudden fame Isaac has gotten from Twitch and playing in pro tournaments may have gotten to his head a little bit.

PROLOGUE

you’re born to a mother that adores you the way a mother should – she loves you with everything she’s got,  &  somehow it makes up for the absent father who abandoned both her  &  you even before you were born. you’re happy ; as you grow  &  learn to smile you become aware, however. you’re mother never lets you see her cry, hurries to swipe the tears from her eyes when you get home from school. you’re seven years old when she brings someone home for the first time ; this man scares you, but you don’t tell her that. she deserves to be happy, after all.

from then on there’s a different man following your mother into your home every night – you grow accustomed to it. one of them though, one of them you see over  &  over again. you like him ; he makes your mother laugh  &  he teaches you to play video games on the console he brings.

CHAPTER I

you’re fourteen when he buys you your own console  &  a few games to boot. he knows you’re having a hard time in school, knows you’re not properly making friends,  &  this is the only way he can think to help ; he’s not your father, after all.

you lose yourself in the digital worlds that play across your cracked tv screen,  &  miraculously, you make friends. they’re from all over the country,  &  they understand you better than anyone in this god forsaken town. halo is your escape, your comfort ; it’s all that gets you through junior  &  senior high. in junior year, you post your first video to youtube. it’s two minutes long, poorly edited,  &  really it’s just you  &  your friends fucking around, but it’s a start. you continue to make videos all through high school, one per week usually, on a channel that shares a name with your gamertag.

CHAPTER II

by some miracle, you graduate. you hold your head high  &  march down that aisle, painfully aware of the hundreds of eyes focused on you,  &  collect your diploma. you’re halo friends are loathe to admit it, but you know they’re proud of you.

when you’re accepted into a graphic design program at a university in texas, you know your mother is happy for you. she bids you farewell with tears in her eyes,  &  for the first time, she lets them slip down her cheeks in front of you. but college is hard,  &  you struggle once more to connect with your peers ; so again you turn to halo – to the reds  &  blues.

you’re twenty - one  &  you make a mistake. you’ve got options, of course, but you can’t bring yourself to end a life that has yet to begin.  &  so nine months pass – it’s per chance that you go into labor when visiting one of your friends, but you’re almost glad. you’re son is born with few complications,  &  your whole world shifts.

EPILOGUE

you’re a twenty - two year old single father, you’re a part - time student,  &  a full - time gamer. you keep in close contact with as many friends as you can, visit as frequently as your schedule allows.

it’s to your pleasant surprise that your subscriber count rapidly increases after the birth of your son – he’s your everything,  &  the support of so many makes every day manageable for you.

PROLOGUE

your father taught you how to hold things with mini versions of his own — with yours. he taught you how to throw a baseball, how to shoot a basketball, how to shoot a trigger on a real gun & on a playstation 2 controller. he had a bright smile & an infectious laugh, & to this day, your mother tells you your laugh sounds like the one she fell in love with. but he got sick. his skin grew sallow & waxy ; his bones grew brittle & cracked. but that spark in his eyes never faded, that smile never slipped off his face — at least not until he was in a casket.

your mother held your face & said there would be days like this. you didn’t understand why it was so easy for her to get over it until you were older & you realized not only did she know for years before he was a shriveled shadow that he was going to die, but that she had to. for you.

CHAPTER I

you decided, the first time you realized where she was going when she left the house at night in a nightgown hidden underneath a giant coat, stilettos in her hand, & her married name on her tongue, that it was your job to take care of her now. your father would have wanted that.

at fourteen, you weren’t old enough to hold a job, so you did what you could. it started with small things : lipsticks in colors you saw her look at in magazines. the handbag in the window of a shop she passed every day. her favorite snacks were always snocaps. you stole those, too. & when you got better, you picked the locks to vending machines & brought her salads on your way home from school. you used sleight of hand to steal entire wallets. you shoplifted an xbox in celebration of depositing $500 into her account. then your mother found out & instead of being happy, she scolded you & forced you to get a real job.

it worked. for a while. but a kid can only work at subway for so long.

the gaming took off. you didn’t realize how good at it you were until you met a group of friends on call of duty & they told you you could do it for a living. it piqued your interest — but not before you were sent to college.

CHAPTER II

texas a&m in college station was only a two-hour drive from austin, where the majority of your friends lived & gamed. during the weekdays, you studied as hard as you could, despite the distractions that rattled around inside your feverish head. on the weekends, you made the drive back to austin. you all got better & better —

& then you started to win.

EPILOGUE

somehow, you managed to juggle life as a professional gamer & life in a fraternity for the next two years, but before you could graduate, the project took off. it came to a point where you had to pick between college & gaming for a living : guess which one you went with?

two years later, you still wonder if you made the right decision. you know, if need be, you can hightail it back to college station & make a real name for yourself, but for now ——— at least your mother still gets checks in the mail every month from camden adam darling.

PROLOGUE

you grew up in the wonderful troy, new york, inside what you swear is the worst household family to ever grace this earth. you’re the oldest out of three, yet you know YOU’RE the failure out of all of them.  ( why else would they continue to have kids until they got it right? until they had a girl? )  &, god, does it show that they hate you the most. your father, more than your mother. he abused you & your younger brother, the middle child, at least once a day. typically more than that. you like to think your mom didn’t get any of the violence, but after you’ve breathed in fourteen years worth of bruises & bloodied cuts instead of oxygen, she left, & refused to take you with her.

CHAPTER I

during your last year of middle school, you always heard the excited mutterings from your classmates of some new video game & its console. you weren’t expecting to get invited anywhere to try it yourself, but one day you stole enough of your dad’s money to buy an xbox & halo: combat evolved. at first, it was just a nice distraction from your father, but as time went on the distraction became your daily escape. from then on, you bought each new halo game & the occasional console with it on release, eventually investing in an average headset.

high school is when the abuse grew worse, when you heard the same insults from him day after day  (  “ you’re the reason she left me, you fucking waste of skin! ”  ). high school is when you realized the xbox was not enough of an escape, &when you found yourself crawling to drugs when you wanted peace. its when you found more comfort in a group of friends you found through matchmaking in halo 2 than you would ever find in your real life. you & your friends decided to split into two teams, red & blue, & you were the second person to claim red team. often you’d play online with all of them while high, you’re not sure if they ever really heard you sober. when your dad screamed at you or your siblings, & the voices in your headset would ask what was happening or what was wrong, you usually never answered, assumed the background noise would explain itself.

CHAPTER II

you were both terrified & excited for high school graduation, though perhaps not for reasons one normally is; terrified because it meant you had to see your father that much more, yet excited because it meant you could spend more time with the friends you made in halo. you founded your own youtube channel that went by the same name as your gamertag, if only to get some extra cash on the side. you also heard of the competitive gaming team that went by the name of project freelancer around this time, & you held a certain amount of respect & appreciation for them, watched a few of their matches online. ( later, a few of the blues would introduce you to them. )

you & the rest of the reds & blues found a convention in austin, texas to meet up at, & you took the chance in a heartbeat. that weekend was the best you’ve had in your life, & you drug your feet the entire way back to the airport. you really hated to leave them so soon.

EPILOGUE

good things have a rare chance of happening in your life, but you’re beyond relieved & ecstatic that the opportunity to leave your birth house so soon after high school graduation is one of those good things. a few months ago, you found a small house in trenton, new jersey to live in, & your brother gladly took the offer to join you. you’re starting to shift away from youtube, allowing it to collect & keep it’s long-forgotten memories. instead, you’ve founded a twitch channel, & have started streaming. occasionally, you’re joined by your group of friends, or even people from that project freelancer team.  ( your chat gets really excited over it, but you don’t understand why they get that excited. )

PROLOGUE

tacoma would have been a nice place to raise a family had your father not been the mean drunk he was. the sweeping landscapes & beautiful waterfront parks would have made good grounds to play on had your depressed mother ever taken the time to take you there. your oldest sister got married & moved out as quickly as she could. your second oldest sister followed suit, though she got quite a bit more banged up on her way out than the first one did.

you used to drown out the sound of your parents fighting with a pair of crappy headphones & the games just new enough to have online functions & just outdated enough to be considered uncool. you stuck to halo A LOT, & when a group of elite gamers approached you about skills you didn’t realize you had, you took the chance & flew to austin, texas to meet them.

CHAPTER I

it didn’t take long for you to get comfortable with your new family. carolina’s dad treated you better than your own father ever did, though you could never figure out why that made carolina scowl. you made fast friends with your teammates, & before too long, considered them closer than your siblings. you all spent night after night messing around on halo, shoving your faces full of pizza, & turning your blood into mountain dew. life was good.

CHAPTER II

& then it got better. looking back, you’re still not sure how your little group of friends climbed the ranks so fast, or how you suddenly went from a basement in austin to center stage in hollywood, but you didn’t complain. how could you? you & your team raked in so much money you forgot what it was like to be poor.

EPILOGUE

since then, you’ve expanded your little family to include the blood gulch crew. you fill your days with gaming & editing videos & you fill your nights with insomniac gameplay & skype calls to your old friends. today, the world knows you affectionately as AG3NTWASH1NGT0N or, as your little group of friends like you call you, WASH. somehow, we all end up coming home anyway, right?

PROLOGUE

you grew up in a loud & empty house in texas with a suicidal father, an emotionally vacant mother, & a sister with an attitude as fiery as her hair. you grew up like most boys your age did : with a controller in your hands & a headset on your head. it started with donkey kong & then it grew. you made friends with your xbox, & then your xbox made you friends from across country & timezones : tucker in california, caboose in rhode island.

then everything changed again. carolina started gaming with the freelancers & your father started pouring money into it because saw it as a business investment. if it kept carolina happy & out of his way, then it was worth it. then tex showed up.

PROLOGUE

even when you had no one, when you had nothing, you had your twin. you had a brother. you had parents that loved you, that was true, but they weren’t always there. there was work, or social lives, or emergencies, but it was family.

eventually though that went away too. when your parents died, you followed the only place you could, with your sister. she was your twin after all, where were you supposed to go? you never had much for direction, short of enlisting you barely manage to get your high school diploma. it’s not that you’re dumb, you’re not lazy, you just lack direction; an irony that becomes apparent when people will call you north in a few years.

CHAPTER I

you wind up having to find ways to make ends meet. at first the goal is simple, you need to get the two of you out of providence. there’s too many memories of the car crash, you have to go over the bridge, the one which you lost almost everything on, to go to the store. your world becomes a cruel reminder of the mistakes you made. your sister needs out too, the place is suffocating her just as much as it taunts you. you turn to your uncle, one back home, and he helps you to make the money to get out.

you promise yourself once you’re out, you’ll stop this. you don’t know that the connections you wind up making will serve you well later on in life.

CHAPTER II

the two of you manage to get free of providence, you find a place to set up for now. it’s not much, but you manage. you get your GED, couldn’t finish school after the accident like she did. in your spare time you bag food at the super market, it feels good to have some legitimate income. your sister plays video games, and once you manage to save up enough you get a console of your own to join in playing with her. you get good, very good. the two of you are a force to be reckoned with when you’re on the same team.

that doesn’t go unnoticed for long.

EPILOGUE

it’s years later and you’re out; you’re free. you live in austin now, in a house with the people who kept you sane for the last few years. you’ve done good, made a family out of the friends your sister introduced you to. you made a job out of it, real money. not something you have to figure out how to launder. she’s here too, and everything is great. you’ve got fame, a small bit of fortune, and a new family to call your own. while you promised yourself to get out of the life you were forced to endure, you find yourself brought back in. a little cash on the side, and a score for your new friends, your family. they need it anyhow, so what’s the harm? never mind the legality of it, at least you know they’re getting good stuff, the stuff that is safe®.

PROJECT FREELANCER IS THE BEST. at least, that’s what the internet says. they’ve been at the top of pro league for the past two years, but every dynasty has to end at some point. or that’s what their competitors say, anyway. –––– but they’re not the only ones out there who enjoy the game: enter the casual players of THE BLOOD GULCH CREW, a group of online friends who don’t see halo as a major competition. in fact, they hardly take it seriously at all.

this verse is based heavily on THIS au idea, with the addition of freelancers. it’s open to all kinds of hilarity and outrageous ideas –– house parties, dating, how high is too high to play halo, donut’s cam shows.

YOU MUST BE EIGHTEEN TO JOIN. this is a household of sloppy assholes. there will be drugs, alcohol, sexual situations. on top of that, i expect you to be able to conduct yourself as an adult.
