ADAD1002 A3 - Modified final idea + topic (VALUE --> DESIRE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINAL IDEA: AN EGOISTIC, SELF ABSORBED COMMUNITY WHERE WE WORSHIP OURSELVES. A primal desire of humans are wanting to feel good about ourselves in all that we do - and sometimes we may go over in trying to boost our self esteem and some sort of social recognition.
After careful consideration, we realised that our idea is closely linked to the event of Bacchanal, which is about desire and not value. ‘DESIRE’ is more focused and so we have changed our topic to be around DESIRE.

https://passengerart.com/2013/06/28/putting-the-cult-back-in-culture-marina-abramovics-new-world-order/ → Putting the “Cult” Back in Culture: Power and Performance in Marina Abramović’s New World Order
This article explores the many performance works of Marina Abramović. Here are a few excerpts from the article (link below):
“Powerful appeal of idol worship, the widespread and desperate need for attention, and the ever-expanding cult of celebrity, as present in the art world as in any other entertainment industry.” The Artist is Present, MOMA, 2010
“There was a cultish atmosphere to the whole thing that was generated more by the crowd than by their charismatic leader.” → Winter Garden Theatre as Abramović described the “Marina Abramović Institute” she intended to open in order to educate everyone in the “Marina Abramović Method”, during which participants would “engage in a series of long-durational activities: fasting; sleeping in communal quarters; walking for hours at a time; standing barefoot in the snow; functioning only in slow motion or in hyper-speed;” etc.
“By engaging in these long-durational activities and experiments, she suggests, we can reclaim time from our techno-controlled accelerated society and perhaps transcend the perils and pain of contemporary life. She says she is attempting to build a new form of consciousness, a new form of culture, a new community.”
Marina Abramović’s works reflect ideas of desire for attention, recognition and the value placed in social influence. Her performance work/lecture during which she spoke similarly to that of a person trying to start her own cult, with the building of an institute and minimum 6 hours worth of activities for anyone who visited the site, as well as describing a utopic future based on transcention from the “perils and pain of contemporary life”.
The fact that this might even be considered plausible is due to Marina’s enormous reach in the social world as a successful artist, there’s a powerful market structured around her because she is influential and popular.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpMVXWGtkVw (video) → Andrea Fraser’s Official Welcome (2001/2003) → In this work Andrea Fraser takes on the persona of the artist and the curator in a performance piece that satirises the conventions of formal art events, emphasising the exaggerated praise given to artist’s work by critics and curators, and the arrogance or false modesty offered by artists in return.
Official Welcome is about “The profound ambivalence that’s haunted so much 20th century art and particularly avant-garde traditions - the kind of love-hate relationship that artists have with art, its institutions, and the people who support them.” - Fraser (2012)
Our event will be a performance work that uses satire and personas that our group will undertake to emphasise the ways in which our desires within a contemporary society is a collective cult of self-obsession.

Research A3
Artworks about Religion/Research (Petra):
http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/28290/1/the-groundbreaking-artists-challenging-religion-through-art → The groundbreaking artists challenging religion through art - Dazed (source)
Andres Serrano - Piss Christ (1987)
Many people condemned this work as a display of disrespect, but is a work that was created by a Christian man who wished to explore how society has devalued the symbol of the cross and the image of Christ.
“The image aimed to represent how society has cheapened the image of christ and the hypocrisy of followers who twist his words to fit their own purpose.”
For our assessment 3, our work aims to present warped desires through the event of an opening ceremony of a cult. This in no way is supposed to place religion and cult practices on the same level. We are trying to find the balance between using themes of cult practices in a satirical manner which is not misinterpreted as being equated to religion.
Works surrounding religion are vulnerable to being criticised by those who practice that faith. While it is the job of the artist to have good intent, they must also deliver it in a way that does not intentionally cause distress or insult. There will always be people who are offended by or misinterpret a work, but the artist must try to minimize that chance - especially if they are not part of the religion they present in their work - by doing research.

ADAD1002 A3 - initial research by PETRA
Sun 14 Oct RESEARCH on BAPTISM:
Baptism is practiced in several different ways. Aspersion is the sprinkling of water on the head, and effusion is the pouring of water over the head. Immersion in relation to baptism used to refer to any form of dipping, whether the body is put completely under water or is only partly dipped in water; so it can be total or partial. This term is also used for when water is poured over someone standing in water, without submersion of the person. Submersion
—> maybe we can play on the word or change the word “baptism” or “baptizein”, since there seems to be heavy emphasis on what it means in Greek (dip, plunge).
There’s literally a whole section on wikipedia dedicated to different derived nouns from “baptise”
Meaning: Baptism is considered to be a form of rebirth, with a lot of symbolism involving themes of purification, vulnerability(?), removing the old/sinful self and then replacing it with good/truth/etc.
Text: Baptisms involve some kind of statement by the person doing the baptising and candidate (usually repeating words or responding to what was said)
Apparel: Until the Middle Ages, most baptisms involved the candidates being naked (obviously we’re not doing that), but later changed so that the candidate was either dressed in their normal clothes or in some garment significant to the religion such as robes or a uniform.
Debaptism: It is strongly held that baptism cannot be undone and is a once-in-a-lifetime event that can neither be repeated nor undone.
Other non-christian initiation ceremonies:
Miyamairi - Shinto rite of passage in Japan for newborns involving a shrine priest praying for the health and happiness of babies when they’re one month old.
In Ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures, they had an initiation focused on death and introduction to a new life, the greeks fostering escapism (the body as a prison from which one needs to escape by trying to induce a close-to-death like state) and the Egyptians believing that death brought more life than a “new” life could. (For both life and the afterlife depended on the condition of offerings, either directly to the deities through the Pharaoh or to gods when for the deceased)
Artworks about Religion:
http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/28290/1/the-groundbreaking-artists-challenging-religion-through-art → The groundbreaking artists challenging religion through art

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsD638deCto → Black Mass Performance
About the work: Our artwork/performance is inspired by the Bacchanalia, but what is it saying about the event? Is this a parody or a contemporary interpretation of the event? How do we portray it so that it doesn’t offend people who are religious? What is the point?

ADAD1002 A3 - final idea
Group: YUKA MOCHIZUKI, SANDRA THOMSON, PETRA WARR
Wed 10 Oct - we worked on narrowing down all our ideas into creating our own religion. We aren’t sure what kind of religion but it will be somewhat of a community which shares a similar VALUES. We aren’t sure on what values too.
Our thought process for final idea:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since we decided on what event we are doing in regards to VALUE, we tried to come up with what our 10 minutes of presentation should be, that is, an act of baptism and a opening ceremony for the class.
We have not yet to decide on the shared value or the method of baptism so we each wrote some personal notes on personal weird values as well as methods of baptism. We did this without discussing with each other since we believe if we come up with ideas on our own, then reading what others has written, new ideas may be stimulated or some sort of development on existing ones.

ADAD1002 A2 - 700 words Concept statement
Tumblr media
TOPIC 4 - Contemporary art and design often looks at the idea of constructed binaries, such as man/woman, soft/hard, straight/gay, dirty/clean, organic/synthetic. Considering the history of these ‘pairs’, how can art and design interrogate these binaries and offers new insights?
The project idea was not finalised until many online research and brainstorming. It begun with a desire to develop on the maze work from assessment 1, to which I wanted to incorporate another interactive element and making it different from all other mazes. However this idea was soon replaced with an aircraft based project after listening to Airplanes (2015) by B.o.B. I was greatly inspired by the lyrics, ‘can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars, cause I could really use a wish right now’. The boundary theme was not shifted, but I did focus on ‘dreams’ and ‘wishes’ as a platform for my final project. I questioned myself about my own dreams and wishes, and as cliche as it sounds, my ultimate dream is to just live a happy life. In the modern world where changes happen at a rapid speed, people can become exposed to more problems. They can forget about the traditional aspects of life - dreams, happiness, relaxing.
I thought about the times where I created new goals, thought about new wishes every birthday and the times where I gave up dreams. While thinking, I found myself revisiting the emotions when I could not pursue into certain ‘goals’ because of boundaries and doubts. Because of my own experience as well as from the song, I decided that my final project will be based on the fragility of dreams. There is a need for self realisation in this busy world, we need to slow down and reflect on what we truly want.
Crushed Lullaby (2018)  is a mobile like work of art which acts as a reminder of the different ways in which our dreams (as planes) can be destroyed. Lullaby mobiles are used widely for babies as a calming and developmental tool. However, the mobile I have created is targeted for everyone, but it may impact more on those who have dreams, or those who has given up on their dreams.
Dreams are often what many people strives for but because of experiences, self doubts and other influence from other factors, they often become forgotten desires. Those who can really translate their dreams into reality are the ones who bypass all the adversities and are very focused and passionate about achieving their life long goals. My work of art can be intimidating for some people, with its many negative references to the ways in which dreams can be eliminated. While dreams can be fragile, easily forgotten and altered, I want to ensure those who see my work to be able to identify or stimulate their own dreams and wishes. The aim for this work is to motivate all individuals to pass their own boundaries and achieve their dreams.
I selected to use only paper for the planes since it’s strong enough to hold its shape, but fragile and easily crumpled, which fits into my theme about the fragility of dreams. Wire and string are also used as they allow flexibility in the making of the project and its symbolism of ‘binding restrictions’. Many of the different paper planes were based off existing artworks from the 2018 Sydney Contemporary at Carriageworks. Such includes using the canvas as the top, burning papers and the decision of using paper. I bring around a small sketchbook to sketch whenever an idea pops up into my head. I feel like creativity is one of the things which you can not do in a hurry. It requires time and inspiration, it can come randomly, just like how my final project was stemmed off a song I heard. Creativity can form from all five senses, which in my case, was based on seeing and hearing.
Crushed Lullaby is definitely an interesting mobile due to its unique combination of something used for babies and something which is very important (but lacking) in the 21st century - a baby mobile and dreams. If I could iterate it further, I will use different materials to create different planes, especially plastic and fabric, or even wood. It's also very different in terms of its purpose and appearance. It may be intimidating or overwhelming to look from the many distressed planes but it focuses on trying to make people realise the importance of dreams and the importance of breaking boundaries.

ADAD1002 - Final work (Crushed Lullaby)
TOPIC 4 - Contemporary art and design often looks at the idea of constructed binaries, such as man/woman, soft/hard, straight/gay, dirty/clean, organic/synthetic. Considering the history of these ‘pairs’, how can art and design interrogate these binaries and offers new insights?
Since I have different planes in my project, I will run through each one of them and some other features of my project. I have named my project Crushed Lullaby.
Final work as a whole:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top of the mobile is a painting canvas which the surface was burnt and dripped in red candle (resemble blood).
Tumblr media
Wings - Symbolic of flight but torn apart and hang separately, you can’t fly without both wings. Dreams have lost its wings to fly.
Tumblr media
Chained - Unable to fly as chains are heavy and they prevent escape. Dreams can’t run wild and be freely achieved.
Tumblr media
Dirt - Nature can act as a boundary to prevent planes from flying (tornado, tsunami). Dreams can be stopped by mother nature.
Tumblr media
Weighed - Planes are unable to fly if it’s overweight or a fault. The balls act as weights and to disrupt the fluency in flying. Dreams can’t be achieved if one feels heavy or disturbed.
Tumblr media
Sewn - Sewing the sides together, the parts are stuck together so the different areas can’t function in order for the plane to fly. Dreams are difficult to achieve if you’re physically bounded.
Tumblr media
Cut - Cutting the plane into different shapes and sticking them together. Find the dreams before you achieve it.
Tumblr media
Tied - Bounded by elastic band, physical constriction. You need freedom to dream and dream for freedom.
Tumblr media
Taped - Tapes act like blindfolds and wrapped tightly around the plane. You can dream blind, but you can’t achieve dreams when you’re blinded by the wrong things.
Tumblr media
Roped - A thick rope diving in and around the plane. Self restriction can stop them from achieving their dreams.
Tumblr media
Drowned - Paper plane in water in a money ziplock bag. Sealed using PVA and sticky tape, hanging by rope. Make sure to teach dreams how to swim, because if they drown, they will sink.
Tumblr media
Bandaged - sticking bandaids around the plane messily. If one’s hurt, they can become more difficult to focus on their dreams.
Tumblr media
Shot - Punching holes into the paper plane, making it physically unable to fly, just like how parachutes and hot air balloons can malfunction if there are holes. Dreams can slip from holes of doubts, insecurities and negative thoughts.
Tumblr media
Burnt - burning the paper plane and a small bag of the burnt ashes and dusts at the bottom. Anyone can damage your dreams, including close ones.
Tumblr media
Piled - 4 paper planes scrunched and piled together, tied together using rope. Messy thoughts lead to messy dreams.
Tumblr media
Disguised - Messy pink paint on purple paper plane, attached by broken paint brush. People can force their expectations and opinions to change your dreams.
Tumblr media
Stabbed - long stick split in half and stabbed through the paper plane (this is the only plane which is not hanging and instead, mounted on the top of the canvas). Dreams can be violently abused when not protected.

This is the video of my final work for my project. In the background plays Airplanes by B.o.B, a contradiction between the meaning of the project to the song - one is crushing while one is wishing.

ADAD1002 - Experimentations
I did very little experimentations as there is a wide range of things I do and some are simple to do while others may be more complicated. It’s more about how everything piece together.
1. Chains using wires:
Tumblr media
I started with keeping the tails with the hoops so it appears clearer (the 2 hoops at the bottom of the blue chain). But I realised that keeping the tails out has it’s own quirk and it resembles some sort of spike, making it seem more dangerous and restricting. So my chains will all have its tail out.
Tumblr media
2. I lost the image of while the paper was burning - but I had it too close to the fire it end up burning to the point where it does not resemble a plane anymore. Also it became really messy so when I do it again I will ensure I am outside somewhere easy to clean. Next time when I do the proper plane I will try to not place it too close where they burn easily. The burning lingers even when the fire extinguishes so I have to keep an watch out for it.
Tumblr media
3. GLUE OR SEW - I could glue or tape the planes from the bottom but I really want all of them to be different so I decided that some can be locked using sticks, glues, sticky taped, bandaids, sewn using wires etc.
Tumblr media
4. THIS WAS AFTER MAKING ALL THE PLANES - I had to balance everything out just so the mobile is equal in weight and does not end up having one side heavier and tip.

ADAD1002 A2 - Plane ideas
Brainstorming a wide range of different plane-destroying ideas:
Tumblr media
Some of these were too plain and have no meaning (with/without creases in the middle) or repetitive (wet/dried plane in the bottom is replaced with a plane in water instead).

ADAD1002 A2 - Idea development and inspirations from Carriageworks
I feel like there isn’t much ideas revoking around ‘different’ mobiles. I think it’s more about what I include in the mobile. When your dreams are crushed, most people ‘don’t care’ because they may not necessarily understand how you feel. So I used a ‘fuck it all, I’m not planning much cause I don’t really care’ approach with this project. Of course I will still do experiments and evaluations and iterations when needed.
I visited 2018 Sydney Contemporary Art at Carriageworks and I saw a few artworks which gave me a few ideas for my project:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amer’s I Do Not Love You - Could use thread to sew up the plane so it couldn’t fly, ‘Do Not Fly’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaa’s A better World Without Us - The strings the people in the artwork used to suicide are like the strings of a baby mobile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Davis’ Sea Change - resembles the paper plane mobile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Storrier’s untitled artwork of a huge paper plane - I could fold paper planes for my mobile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hirst’s Twenty Four Hours - Medical restrictions, like bandaids, body restrictions, needing to rely on medicine. Maybe a pill or bandaged plane.
Tumblr media
Unknown artist and name of artwork of fire - Can burn the plane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ross’ Fool’s Paradise - Could cut the tip of the plane, another way it can’t fly anymore. Headless plane?
Tumblr media
Unknown card sculpture - could shred or tear the paper planes.
Tumblr media
Unknown - this is NOT dream, this is NOT wish, this is NOT life, this is NOT reminder of your crushed desires
Tumblr media
Unknown - Could cover the plane in dirt like how nature can also be a form of restriction.
Tumblr media
Unknown of the faces - The people have to be happy, have to be something they don’t/can’t want to be. I can paint a plane another colour just so it symbolises how dreams can be dictated and forced to be of someone else's expectations or commands.
Tumblr media
Unknown of the red texts - Overall attitude my mobile should be showing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben David’s Movement Box, from People I saw but Never Met - They look like wires instead of cut out paper. But the wire appearance inspires me to include the use of wire into my project, they’re flexible and can create chains.
Tumblr media
Unknown of the hole in canvas - Could use canvas as the plate of the mobile and have the planes hanging down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Osmond’s Spatial Rotation - Could poke random sticks through the planes just like stabbing, a violent way to crush dreams.

ADAD1002 A2 - Finalising project idea
While looking around images of plane, I came across baby plane crib mobiles.
Tumblr media
Image: http://suchconsulting.com/chandelier-mobile-for-crib/chandelier-mobile-for-crib-airplanes-and-clouds-paper-mobile-navy-red-grey-and-white-baby-nursery-chandelier-crib-mobile/

I really like how the planes are suspended in the air, but still somehow ‘restricted’ by the attached strings. I thought about how I could create different ways to ‘crush’ dreams and wishes if I do use such idea. I went to search up the importance of baby mobiles, maybe this clear some uncertainties and unknown factors to why I should create the mobile for my project.
Tumblr media
Source of the information: baby mobiles - do they serve a purpose?2011, https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/6578499/baby-mobiles-do-they-serve-a-purpose
Tumblr media
I have finalised my idea that I will create a crushed dream mobile. It’s a way of reminding about how dreams are fragile and can be ‘broken’ through many methods.
