the kind of crush that makes you want to die, the kind that makes you sick to your stomach, leaves you feeling unreal, like a bad dream, just because you’re in their house. covering your face in all the photos. headphones in, hiding behind the couch “for laughs” while all your friends sit in a circle laughing together. liking you so much i wish i hated you instead. they write bad emo songs about this type of thing. seven years of this. sharing a bed after a concert and putting as much distance as i can between us, until i’m falling off the mattress, because i’m scared i’ll wake up with my arms wrapped around you. ripping up handfuls of grass outside the science classroom. i told you my deepest secrets, then, that december afternoon, feeling ensnared. how i hid under a blanket in your basement;

walking to the lake next door left my phone on my desk at home lie in the grass and stare at the sun wonder if i should wait another day

places where i feel safe and warm like a baby bird
sitting in a hot shower watching the side go down the drain, steam so thick the ceiling looks hazy
back of a car on a road trip
sleeping on buses
laying in bed with my headphones in and my eyes shut, pink salt lamp glowing, candlelit
that dream i had with someone playing with my hair
snow
the uncharacteristically warm day at the end of a cold season, and the sudden temperature drop at the end of a warm season
good quiet warm music with lots of reverb
rain
my friend’s apartment in college
books about that things i did that i don’t want to discuss with anyone else
scrubbing scabs off cuts, tracing my fingers over new scars

Creative Writing Workbook: It’s OC-time!
Here are some activities you can use as you develop your Original Characters (”OCs”), which can be original characters in a novel you’re writing, the narrator of a poetry series, etc. I find that exercises that help one to explore the psychologies and histories of one’s characters can be very fun. As such, here are several OC-focused writing activities! Nosebleed Club ♡ OC’s
Family Tree Who is in your OC’s family tree? Draw it out, and create a 1-2 sentence description of each family member. The descriptions can be as poetic or as concise as you like. (On a personal note, this exercise has helped me figure out fun dynamics, tensions, and reactions between certain family members. It’s especially fun for big families!)
#Goals Your OC’s—especially ones central to your story—must have a motivation that drives their story forward. Determine one concrete goal for your OC (”I want to be prom queen” and “I want my son to be freed from prison”) and one abstract goal (self-confidence, overcoming guilt, etc.). Write about both of them and any possible complications that might come up! For example, your OC wants to be prom queen, but she doesn’t even know if she can make it to prom because her grandmother is very ill. Or your OC wants her son freed from prison, but she begins to encounter evidence that suggests he might actually be guilty. Etc.
Love You to the Moon & Back (100-250 words) What/who does your OC want more than anything? Why? Is it something they’ve always wanted, or have they been conditioned to want it? Are they in love with someone? Answer these questions from the voice of your character/from their perspective. (Psst. You can write it in the form of a monologue, which is very fun.)
Dirty Little Secret (100-250 words) What’s one thing your OC keeps to themselves? What’s something they’re afraid will ruin them if it ever got found out? Everyone has secrets—some worse than others. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad secret, either; your OC can hide the fact that they’re a prince, or an ancient rustic deity, or something.
The Lies They Tell (250-500 words) Write a scene in which one OC lies to another OC. It can be about something small—like bad grades—or something devastating—like ruining someone else’s marriage. What’s the interaction between the two characters like? Is it tense, or does the liar play it off naturally? If your OC really isn’t the type to lie, then write about a confession. How does it play out?
Five Objects What are five objects/animals/etc. that represent your OC? These can be objects of personal significance to them, symbols, things they’ve made and are proud of, etc.
Rumor Has It… (250-500 words) How do your other OC’s regard your OC (protagonist, antagonist, or otherwise)? Are they a subject of conversation (gossip) in the community? Does your OC draw people towards them when they walk into a room—or repel? Rarely are people invisible ghosts roaming through the world. Even ignoring an OC is often a conscious choice on the part of other OC’s.
In Another Universe… Write fanfiction about your own fiction! What is your OC like in an alternate universe? What would they be like if their parents were still alive? Or if The Tragedy never happened? Or if they married The Girl of Their Dreams? Doing this can help you think deeper about the ramifications of choices your OC’s have made throughout their lives.

keep it within you. wrap it up in cotton cloth, wrap it tightly. keep it under your skin, in the space between your organs. sit and wait for it to dissolve. make sure no one ever finds out.
Have you told anyone your plans?

i keep it inside me now. it's not a survival campfire anymore; i tend to it like a hearth. it burns steady and keeps me warm.
some days a little too warm. the energy doesn't know where to go. the heat builds on itself, a runaway reaction. but i don't want to wield it anymore, so i sit and wait til it burns itself out.
Where is the magic now?

I told my gf that I was having an episode earlier and she replied “is it the beach episode” and it shocked me so much that it grounded me immediately

it is halloween. i’m wearing a random shirt and pants but i’ve drawn kitty whiskers on my face. i’m trying to sort out my class schedule and my advisor asks me what i’m supposed to be, and i forget about my makeup, and i say “um, a student?”
when i finally get out, we meet up for tea and cookies. we chat in the armchairs of the student union. one thing leads to another. we finish our cups of tea. i’m doing your makeup. we’re walking.
one foot in front of the other, and then we’re downtown. a large, hulking tree monster lumbers down the street. we grin and wave. it takes off its mask; a man with piercings sticks his tongue out at us before putting the mask back on.
we go trick or treating like kids. two college students, collecting candy and coloring pages. it’s warm for late october, and i am collecting lollipops, tootsie rolls, chocolates.
just being two cats, wandering around. being kids one last time.
Tell me a soft memory

i get so bored, you know?
matcha lattes. at this point in my life - it's matcha lattes. perfect shade of green. sweet green foam on top. even better: matcha lattes with milk froth. that white gradient on grassy green - unmatched. gorgeous.
and - you know what, pastries too.
cream puffs piled so high they're about to burst. tarts with gleaming strawberries coated in sugar syrup. dusted with powdered sugar. i don't even like strawberries. but they're so pretty...
i used to have an aesthetic. space when i was nineteen - not cute and holographic, but expansive and incomprehensible. colors and open fields when i was twenty. a year later, high school emocore. the next year, desert goth. now i'm at my first real job and i don't have the energy to dress nice. by and large, i don't know what i want.
except i could always go for a nice matcha latte. and i'm always ready to sink my teeth into a good pastry.
What is your aesthetic now?

every month i make a new playlist with the music i discovered that month. everything i looped at least a few times. when i'm bored i'll click through:
here is modest mouse, and i am in a skatepark in the dead of summer, hair in two braids, tackling the quarter pipe over and over. oso oso and the drive home from the mall with my cousins. woolworm by indian summer has me waiting in the car at great clips, newly jobless, hair cut short for the first time in years. angry and lonely, the chorus screaming "this is the moment" over and over drowning out everything else.
take the month and distill it into moments. take the moments and bottle them up for later. i remember the trip to the amusement park and the sunny september festival just fine. but it isn't until i hit play that i remember the little things: waiting for my mom at sephora in october. sitting in the car with my coworkers flipping through the radio. shoveling snow.
What have you kept bottled up?
