So begins a little parable, animated in 1983, called âThe Tree and the Catâ. A little cat happens upon this tree and asks it, âAre you alone here?â
âYes.â
âOh⌠but, all alone? Donât you ever experience sadness, fear or loneliness?â
âNo. I donât wait for anyone. I donât need anyone.â
âAh⌠how I wish to live alone, to be independent, to not grieve anyoneâ, said the cat.
âWell now,â said the tree with dignity, âItâs not too hard to learn.â
So the cat learns these secrets by living and staying with the tree to observe how (perhaps counterintuitive when trying to be independent, yes)? Time passes. Though the cat and tree do not speak, they enjoy each otherâs company. The tree helps the cat with protection through autumn and winter, the harshest weather. The cat warms the tree with its presence.
Spring comes and the cat says goodbye and that she can now leave. âDonât go!â cries the tree. âYouâve taught me a lot.â The cat simply smiles and walks away.
âAnd that is the whole story of the tree. Or rather, the tree and the cat.â
Another bittersweet installation in the canon of eastern European animation. One of the things I like about this one is not only the message of people needing people, but how much the cat acts like a real cat. You know how cats are!

The relationship between Punpun and Aiko-chan is a key point for the story as a whole.
Itâs a toxic love that does not spare either of them, but with particularly devastating effects on Aiko Tanaka. Why? What brings the two protagonists to not be able to experience a ânormalâ relationship? Is their one an authentic love?
First of all their dynamic moves by an obsession: their love is not beautiful nor pure, but their deeper obsession. Two dark rooms can not create a light of hope, and moreover they have both grown separate from each other and so they do not know anything about their existences. They are simply obsessed with a childish love on which they have poured out all the discomforts of their existence, in two parallel but opposite ways:
- Aiko-chan saw in Punpun the one who would save her, thanks to the very strong promise that Punpun made at the school time;
- Punpun finds in Aiko-chan his original sin that he needs to destroy: he did not take her to Kagoshima that day.
Thatâs why they ended up idealizing each other. Neither one really cares about the person of the other, not even being able to perceive the partner as figure with feelings and a soul. This seems to be underlined when with Aikoâs death Punpun drags her corpse around talking to her. He doesnât even care if Aiko is dead or alive, in a total objectification of her body:
By the way Aiko Tanaka embodies the dark side of Punpunâs personality, his repressed wishes and his innocence, but also a way to escape this pain by espiation. He hoped to be killed by Aiko-chan and when he finds an Aiko who canât do that he ended to become her murderess:
Thatâs also why he wants to torture his original sin, in the person of Aiko Tanaka. Thanks to hide all these parts of his personality for a long time Punpun starts to destroy himself, ended up to express his emotions in a violent way.
We can maybe also define Aiko-chan as the real antagonist from the beginning: not a âbadâ one, but a person with completely opposite interests of the protagonist ones and which hinders his journey. All that Aiko cares about is a normal life, which Punpun still to refuse. Whatâs more, even as a child Punpun was searching for Aikoâs affection, but what interested to Aiko was an help in a selfish consideration of their relationiship:
So⌠Aiko-chan represents what Punpun tries to fight in his inner world every day, every time and every hour. The sin that must be eradicated but also sometimes the lessons Punpun learnt during his journey, like to not bè pathetic still whishing for something more:
Killing Aiko-chan will prove to be like the final act to defeat his own inadequacy and then be able to reborn. Aiko is the guilt that does not allow Punpun to improve himself, while Punpun for Aiko is the help that she would have to find in herself.
Another important key concept for their dynamic is Kagoshima, which remains a strong presence throughout the manga and one of the saddest consequences of their failures. Kagoshima is the place of hope and salvation, like a Godot that never comes. Even when they finally arrive to Kagoshima they find the most complete nothingness. This is why if you do not solve your problems youâll drag them with you wherever you go:
Jaehyun: I feel this pressure that I have to always look perfect.
[Please watch the video and share]
I just want to shed some light on how Jaehyun feels since I havenât seen anyone post about this.
This was his response to someone asking what heâd been thinking about lately. Now, mind you thereâs a lot of cuts in this video because Jaehyun was pausing a lot in between words and I just wanted to make it shorter.
But those short pauses he was making was because of how nervous he was opening up to us about his thoughts and feelings.
[EDIT] i just want to emphasize just how nervous he was, he couldnât look straight into the camera when he was carefully trying to think of the right words to say. he was very much hesitant at the beggining of the vlive when he almost talked about it. pls let it be a normal thing for idols to feel comfortable about letting us know whatâs up without them feeling like the world will turn against them if theyâre too honest.
Before the question was asked, he was going to talk about what heâd been thinking lately but instead stopped himself and said âI donât wanna say it because itâs too seriousâ. Do you understand how much effort it would have taken him to be open with us? He didnât want to make the Vlive too serious, but when someone asked him again he opened up and told us whatâs been on his mind.
Can we all collectively agree to pls enjoy and appreciate the talent, effort and hardwork that Jaehyun puts into the things he creates without making it all about his looks. Heâs more than just a pretty face.
I donât want him to feel pressure into thinking he has to be perfect. But I also understand that heâs created his own meaning of perfect for himself to be happier. That his perfect means to put in 100% effort, diligence and love into his job so that heâs happy with the outcome. He wants us to know he enjoys what he does, so letâs not take that for granted by focusing on his looks. Letâs also praise him for his hardwork. đĽş

Short comic, while I work on something bigger on the side.
It is nevertheless a very important topic. A lot of seabirds die because they eat plastic. They feed their chicks with the waste. Itâs really tragic.

the main thing I love about us bookworms is that we all have that one series or that one book (or multiple) that means the world to us, and we can always feel at home talking/thinking/rereading those books.
One of the saddest scenes in tfc was when Neil had his physical and Abby said something like âDonât worry, Iâve seen worseâ to encourage him to take his shirt off and Neil was just like âGod, I sure fucking hope notâ
