Summarize
I think this class tells us the purpose and reason of design that we are doing, how it is affecting our lives, and what the basis of design is.
At first, I wondered why we learned about philosophy in design class. However, the more I listened to the contents of the class, the more I understood why this class was important and necessary for us.
After learning about semiotics, I learned that design solves some language barriers. So I realised again that design is a very important factor in our lives. I think visual elements sometimes become a better means of communication than language.
Another memorable class is Postmodernism. I learned the characteristic of postmodernism that 'absolute truth does not exist'. And this helped me expand the framework of my thinking. Thinking that there is no design in the world that is the answer, it has become easier to unfold ideas.
I learned that innovation begins with a simple imagination. When I looked at the world, I thought I should look at it with curiosity and observe it. For example, I believe that my imagination will be better if I continue to develop a habit of thinking about why it was designed like that and that I can improve the design like this when I see an object while walking on the street.
Through this class, I think I learned what kind of spirit I should have to walk the path of a designer in the future.

Cultural Materialism
Cultural materialism is a theory that argues that 'culture is formed in a material background'. And these material conditions affect socially and politically and form a new culture.
In class, we investigated the most notable infrastructure around us, examined how infrastructure on the Internet affects us, and discussed the importance of digital privacy, which is emerging as Internet infrastructure develops.
Internet infrastructure can be said to have been derived from traditional cultural materialism by technological development.
For example, when new famous works of art such as music, painting, and sculpture were released, people could only see them in person in the past. However, the era has come when you can access it comfortably with just a small screen of a smartphone. However, as many people can easily access these things, cyber violence is becoming a problem as they can easily give positive and negative reviews about works.
Cultural materialism believes that the evolution of culture basically focuses on changes throughout the system rather than the actions or independent events of individual members of society, and that social growth and change originate from the application of new technologies and economic systems.
And cultural materialism says that the source of all problems is also material.
Therefore, in order to solve the problem caused by these material causes, negotiations between art makers and viewers must be made in consideration of various material factors such as the physical and economic aspects of society, social organisation and social relations.(WORD COUNT: 245)

POST-STRUCTURALISM
Structuralism is a view that argues that society and the world should be understood as a whole through structure.
Tumblr media
Linguistics, for example, states that language exists as a system, so it should be explained through relationships between elements rather than individual grammatical elements. Alphabet A alone has no value, and its value arises from its confrontation with other alphabets.
Post-structuralism began by criticising the characteristics of idealistic structuralism that believe in the connection between all symbols and objects, including language. Post-structuralism breaks away from the dichotomy mindset and recognizes and embraces 'others'. In other words, a single symbol or word can contain many meanings.
Tumblr media
This is a work called a flying plane. In this work, each element of an object is combined according to certain rules to form a total. In structuralism, the structure is a component, and the component forms a certain structure.  It can be seen from this work that in order to understand an object, the structure of the total must be understood.
Design in any field today is inevitable in human life and at the same time exists as an area of culture. As humans live their lives, communication with others is natural, and they share expressions and values through meaning delivery in each other's structural systems. Human communication methods can be divided into Verbal Communication and Non-verbal Communication. In general, design can be said to be a medium with the properties of 'non-verbal communication'.
In conclusion, I think structuralism and design are very closely related. (WORD COUNT: 250)

POSTMODERNISM
Modernism refers to the tendency and attitude to deny existing morality, authority, and tradition and pursue the creation of a new and innovative culture.
Tumblr media
This building was designed by Le Corbusier, the first to use exposed concrete as "Villa Saboa". This shows that concrete and glass alone can provide a place where functions are freely matched.
But as modernism became increasingly "repeated," even it became "traditional." It is postmodernism that comes out to break it.
Tumblr media
This is Joseph Cossus's Three Chairs. If you look at the image, there are three on the wall: the actual chair, the picture of the chair, and the dictionary definition of the chair. All three have different shapes, but they are all chairs. Through this work, Joseph expressed that there is no absolute truth in this world.
I like the feature of postmodernism that 'absolute truth does not exist'. Because I think I can expand my limited thinking framework. In this craft class, there was an exercise that designed patterns. At first, when designing the pattern, I was at a loss how to design it with only the basic figure. However, I was able to expand the framework of thinking by looking at the works created by other students. They designed using various forms, such as a shape in which curves and straight lines are used together or a shape with holes in it, as well as a basic figure. So I want to design with the postmodernist spirit always in mind. (WORD COUNT: 247)

SEMIOTICS
Signs are very convenient and necessary in our lives. I think it sort of solves the language barrier. For example, if we go abroad and go to the bathroom, but it says toilet in a language we don't know in front of the bathroom, we won't be sure if it is right or not.
However, even if you don't know the language of the country, you can see that it is a toilet by looking at the sign that means toilet. There are many things to find signs around us, such as company logos, traffic signs, advertisements, and posters.
Tumblr media
The design of the signs contains the meanings that they want to convey. For example, if you look at the logo of the sound brand BEATS, it has a lowercase letter b written on the circle. However, the logo can also be interpreted as a profile of a person wearing headphones. This design is called a decoding design.
Tumblr media
In class, we selected a poster that corresponds to the decoding design and interpreted it. It was a poster with a thumb up hand holding a knife. And as a result of interpreting it, it was a poster under the theme of 'supporting racism on the Internet is a crime'.
I want to design works that people all over the world can easily understand like signs. (WORD COUNT: 223)

Phenomenology
This time I set ‘time’ as an example of phenomenology.
We express and recognize the unclear concept of time through an object called a clock.
However, we perceive the concept of time not only in the clock but also in different ways.
There are some clues around us, such as weather and space that we can guess roughly the time.
When we look back on the past, the moment at that time will often be remembered in connection with other clues, not just in time. This relationship between the world and consciousness itself is called phenomenology. These days, I am thinking about how to apply this phenomenology to my artistic activities.
Tumblr media
Salvador Dali's "The persistence of Memory" seems to be the best work to express what he felt when he saw things in this world. It is a work that interprets the world based on one's feelings and situations and expresses it surrealistically.
Tumblr media
This picture is a work that expresses the flow of time in my own way by overlapping a total of five photos. These are photos of the most memorable moments for me. And memorable moments are used to remember the time I passed.
When I see artworks such as paintings and photographs, I will analyse the context of the work and try to interpret it from various perspectives. (WORD COUNT: 221)
