Abu Simbel to Aswan
Air or road ? Private car (LE 1200-1800) preferred to internal flights. Approximately 3 hours at 100km/hr. Straight and uneventful.
Airbnb on Elephantine Island ( primarily Nubian enclave in two large villages) overlooking Kitchener Island. Gorgeous setting. Site of Russian workers during Aswan’s High Dam (1970s) construction. Movenpick Resort here. An eco-hydroponic setup supplying fish and salad vegetables for high-end hotels. Apparent sabotage (fish kill) putting an end to the enterprise. An eating place and drinks (beer LE 50/500ml bottle) perfectly situated on river bank above a jetty pickup point for ferry (LE 5 ).
Masses of large tourist cruisers moored side by side from Luxor. Weather quite warmish during the day. In hindsight , the best place to sail in a felucca (sail against the current and drift back if no wind). The river is narrow with very scenic banks.
3 nights here and moved to east bank for another 3. Very busy , noisy and dirty. A poor choice in Hapi hotel.
Managed 3 sites in 4 hours- Temple of Philae, High Dam and the Unfinished
Obelisk. Hired a taxi (LE 300) + tip. Temple of Philae a highlight, motor boat to the island - lovely touch. Overall experience 5/5 !

Abu Simbel
Cairo(0730)to Aswan(0855), transit Aswan(1155)to Abu Simbel(1240) with Egypt Air.
3 nights at Eskaleh Ecolodge(100 Euros/night- paid with AUD). Breakfast included , lunch/dinner available and preferred over town/street food.
Location on Nile, of course. Genuine Nubian constructed accommodation. With Sudanese border just 40kms south , most inhabitants are Nubians(Sudanese)- distinctly African appearance , compared to the Egyptians.
Most shops closed Friday till noon.Saturday is an extra day off for banks and civil servants.People very , very friendly. “Welcome” is their greeting. No hurt feelings if you don’t succumb to their tauting if you smile throughout the episode , and you do have lots of them- age unlimited.
Women don’t taut usually.Non verbal if they do.
Temple of Ramses II and the temple of Hathor ,next to it, are what most tourists come to see (usually by boat or bus)for a short visit (couple of hours). These impressive temples were saved from the rising waters of the newly completed Aswan High Dam by moving to higher ground(65m) piece by cut up piece.

Etihad A380 lifts off from Sydney at 2150 hours.Yes , they do actually get off the ground. Unpopular night flight ( for me ). Dinner/supper within an hour. First to be served with a Kosher meal ! Ahead of the goyim (I’m not Jewish). Don’t know how that occurred. Noise level low enough to understand speech in back of seat AV. Certainly quieter than the smaller Boeing aircraft.
14.5 hours later landed in Abu Dhabi. Spotted our hotel in the early morning light (6 hours behind AEST) . At a record 18 degree tilt , it can’t be missed. The Andaz (Capital Gate) an impressive all steel trianglulated lattice structure enclosed in glass. Reception on the 18th floor from which a second lift took us to our rooms on the 29th floor. Complimentary Happy Hour on reception floor/bar - free white and red with nibbles.
Abu Dhabi . A ghostly-looking place , everything covered in a grey dust , including vegetation. Sky was grey for the same reason. Visibility was a few kilometres at best - viewed from our eerie. Very hot outside by mid- morning.
The Grand Mosque, a must see , at 30 Dirhams ( AU$12 ) away. Largest in the world (?). Huge and impressive outside but quite blingy inside , especially the chandeliers.
The Ferrari museum failed to get a consensus to visit.
Food and transport costs similar to Oz.
Very little foot traffic (not surprising with the heat). Felt very safe. Foreign workers , taxis (Indian,Pakistani,Nepalese), hotel staff (African-Zimbabwe, Congo, Cameroon) quite self aware of strictness in the Emirates. One taxi driver was fined heavily by his employer for rolling a cigarette in his car -caught on camera in the taxi. Rolling , not smoking it !
Abu Dhabi to Cairo with Etihad still , but in a Boeing 737 ( not max 8 thank god! ). Just under 4 hours-quite doable.
Visa at US$25 ( in US dollars cash thank you -bought back home ) paid on arrival . AU$ 70 if bought online in Oz.
Overnight at Novotel Airport Hotel (AU$100 - quite rundown but at the airport ) ready for early flight to Abu Simbel.
