[Alphonse x Reader]

Summary: Reader shows up to the shop with a surprise that Al has been waiting to see.

Al’s head perked up at the sound of approaching footsteps from outside. He knew exactly whose it was too. The realization made him chuckle, of how lovestruck he was that he could recognize their goddamn footsteps from outside the shop. But there was something about them, he reasoned, that made it so distinct and different to how regular customers approached the shop.

Maybe, he thought, it was the sporadic missteps, as they avoided the spursed cracks throughout the sidewalk. A childish act, really, but one he found endearing and caught himself mimicking from time to time. Or maybe..

It was the sudden burst of energy that rang through their steps as they picked up speed to hurriedly reach for the door to give Alphonse their routinely hello. Whatever it was, Al tuned into every step leading up to the door as he awaited for that voice--

“Heya, Al,” Reader pipped along to the sound of the bell as they cracked open the door and stepped into the confines of the shop.

“Ah, sweetheart!” Al tossed the final item onto the shelf, back turned towards Listener with a now empty box in hand. “I was wonderin’ when you’d be droppin’ in. Nearly got worried you didn’t wanna see ya’ favorite sugar prince today,” He joyously called out with an all grin, child-pasted face.

It always lightened his mood to have Reader drop in without notice.

“Sorry about that,” Reader chuckled out, “I would’ve popped in sooner but I was a lil uh.. busy! Yeah, I was busy with something.”

He turned to the direction of Reader, unable to see them past the wall of chips and candies. “Nah nah, no worries boo. I’m merely teasing ya’.”

“What was it you were busy with, b-” Al stopped as he rounded the corner. He’d nearly thrown a hacking fit by how abruptly he’d gasped by the sight before him. With a few gently baps to his chest, he pitched up;

“I, wha-- BOO?!?? Ya’ didn’t tell me you were gon dye ya’ hair!” Reader chuckled softly to Al’s outburst and bepuzzled gaze, mindlessly fiddling with their freshly trimmed and dyed hair. A look of absolute delight caused Alphonse to radiate as he briskly recomposed himself.

It was just.. it made Alphonse feel so silly thinking about it. Seeing Reader standing in front of him looking so happy with their surprise decision made him feel unbelievably happy, especially since the two now shared the characteristic of dyed hair.

“Shit, come ‘ere! Get over ‘ere! Let me get a closer look!” Reader readily stepped towards Al, allowing the pink-haired male to fiddle and move their hair about, watching contently as the dyed portions glowed in the basking lights of the shop. “Wow..” Was all that crept past the smile that strained Alphonse’s cheeks.

Al didn’t realize how well the color(s) suited Reader. He’d seen them wear said color(s) on numerous occasions, but it created a whole other appearance -vibe?- permanently tinting the folds of their hair.

“I like it.”

“Just like it..?” Reader remarked with a raise of their brow and a teasing tilt of their hip, arms folded across their chest. “Weren’t you the one that insisted that I try dying my hair--”

“What? I mean- I know I did, it’s just- ah geez,” Alphonse heartedly chuckled, releasing the bits of Reader’s hair from his hands. “It.. it looks fuckin’ amazing sweetheart, honestly! Ya’ just had me for a loss of words for a hot second there. The color really suits ya’..”
