I used the camera to make a little video inside the cello - I think it captures something of what I’m trying to achieve. The light is just from waving my iPhone flashlight above the holes but I think this could even work better than the dance-steps.

The music is ‘Soon-To-Be Innocent Fun/Let’s See’ from World Of Echo, (2016) by cellist/artist Arthur Russell.

I managed to get a camera inside the cello body. I’m a bit disappointed with the image quality but it still captures the feeling of the space. I have to build all of the interior structures which is why I need a technical blueprint to work from as well as the photos.

I made start on modelling the cello body - this is going to be as hard as I thought it would be...

I have a cello to pull apart....there’s a few problems getting the angles right when photographing it for modelling

The sunlight hitting the wood surfaces inside this instrument makes it look like an empty theatre or church - simultaneously beautiful and claustrophobic, massive and minature.

I’ve hit a brick wall trying to think through the seashell/Tower of Babel idea I originally nominated for this task. In the meantime, I came across a series of photos taken from the insides of musical instruments used for advertising the Berlin Philharmonic. I find these images incredibly evocative and inspiring in terms of hidden architecture. I’ve decided to create a 3D model violin from scratch and use the internal space for an animated architectural sequence.
