Doorstep Final
Tumblr media
Above is my final two images for the doorstep portrait. I am really happy with how they turned out. Outdoor portraiture has been something I never really done a lot of so it was interesting to try it out. If I was to shoot something like this again I could like to experiment with different locations outwit the doorstep area, and develop my use of natural light.

Doorstep Portrait Plan/Research
For the doorstep portrait brief I plan to photograph my cousin, her mother and her daughter, In order to achieve a flattering light I plan to shoot on either an overcast day or later on in the day. The downside of the latter will be the increased iso needed to shoot. Going into this project I have been looking at the work of other local photographers who have been forced to carry out their work from door steps, so I have quite a good idea of the direction I want to go in. I want my images to be a little more light hearted and less serious, this will come from the posing and by capturing the image more off guard to capture a candid pose.

Something Told Final
I’m really happy with my edit and my image, I fell that the slight pulling back of the contrast helps a lot to convey the bleak minimalist feel I was going for. I had thought about shooting on a black background with lots of props, but I didn’t want to simply copy the traditional examples. Although in popular culture black is commonly used to signify death, in my upbringing and religion in the catholic faith, white would be a more appropriate representation. I also chose to add the additional sheet of card to signify the ‘off white’ version of their selves’ people put up as a barrier to the truth that many believe to be judged in the afterlife.

Something Told Research/Plan
For the something told brief I had a long think about what I wanted to shoot, and around the time of this my mum sadly passed away. I decided at this point I wanted to take my emotions and create a reflection on this. Whist studying the Dutch masters still life paintings I noticed a lot of connotations to death in the images, usually represented by dark colours and macabre objects. I want o stray away from this and experiment with using white and bright colours to convey my idea. I really like the work of Taryn Simon and her project Paperwork and the Will of the Capital. I find it really interesting how she uses the flowers and a contrasting dual colour backdrop. I want to take this idea but do something different with two different shades of white.

Editorial Final
This is my final selection of 6 images for the editorial brief. I feel I have managed to capture a variety of different types of image that I feel accurately display the issue I set out to capture. As I was driving about shooting the images I took a few of larger dumping areas and some smaller more out of the way, for instance the single grey arm chair I shot was out of the way down a derelict dead end street. However is still a blight on the city, and by contrasting this against the large pile of rubble in the lower right frame it shows how wide spread the issue is. If I was to shoot again I would have loved to feature portraits to compliment the work, as I feel it would have given a human nature to it, and show the people who suffer from it, however unfortunately due to covid I was unable to do this.

Editorial Research / Plan
For the editorial brief I have chosen to feature an issue I see around me on a day to day basis, Fly tipping. A growing issue across the city, fly tipping has become especially bad over lockdown due to the fact bulk waste collection was suspended and a large majority of people were doing home improvement work. As a result of this many parks and public places around the east end have been littered with large amounts of waste. I plan to photograph this for this brief to highlight the growing issue that lives around us.
I have a couple of locations in mind however will probably just drive around and photograph what I come across. By doing this I feel I will have a more transparent outlook on the work, as I will photograph it as I see it and as I find it.
Looking at the editorial features from other news outlets I want to keep it quite basic in terms of editing style, and just show the issue for what it is rather than dressing it up and making it look appealing.

Editorial Brief
Research the Narrative
Within Contextual Studies class, research various newspapers available in the UK. Take notes of differing editorial styles of each newspaper. Report on specific approaches to storytelling from a selection of newspapers, ‘tabloid’ and ‘broadsheet’ and online.
Tell the Story
You need to research the THEME and if necessary, attain permission to attend and photograph. You should consider all the aspects of the story, event, people, portraits, places etc.   As the paper will print a two-page special, your images should be as varied as possible in terms of photographic technique.

Lighting the Dark - Final Image
Painting with light is something that I enjoy however rarely do. I had seen this tree a while ago and thought of it instantly for this brief. When I went to shoot I realised I never had a bright enough torch and had difficulty lighting the whole scene, this was further exacerbated by the fact I had to use a shorter exposer than I originally wanted in order to balance the ambient and synthetic light. To combat this I took three different exposures with the aim to combine them in post. I had originally wanted to reshoot however covid restrictions prohibited this. All being said though I am actually quite happy with my final image given the circumstances. If I was to shoot again I would like to experiment with flash and larger light sources.

Lighting the Dark - Research Task
Gregory Crewdson was born in 1962 in New York, and is a photographer who specialises in shooting small American towns in a large and elaborate cinematic style. As a teenager he was a keen musician, who achieved a small fame preforming for tv commercials and on numerous chat shows. This may have ended up as his final career however while studying at university he began experimenting with photography, not yet taking it seriously he seen it as a hobby and somewhere to express his creative side. After gaining recognition for his work he went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts from Yale University, unarguably the setting his career in stone.
He is best known for creating ominous and eerie photographs of American homes, neighbourhoods and interiors. His approach to shooting combines the documentary style William Eggleston with a surreal and dreamlike twist reminiscent of film makers such as Stephen Spielberg. Crewdson’s sets are often very large scale, following in the footsteps of the film industry he creates everything to suit his requirements, from lighting, to rain to the layout of in interiors.

The above images are prime examples of Crewdson’s extensive work, beautiful in both their concept and composition. They all feature very carefully considered set builds, with equally thought out lighting. This approach allows the viewer to see exactly what he wants us to, and experience the emotions he wants is to feel. This is the epitome of photography, we don’t think whats went into the image, we don’t consider the team of 50+ people or the entirely constructed living room built on a soundstage, we just feel the emotions from the very heart of the image.

Beauty in the Banal - Final Series
I am really happy with how these images turned out, I had the idea in my head for a while and was really just waiting for the weather. I love how the cold tones of the sky and the fog blend with the greys of the pylon. I payed about with moving backwards and forwards when shooting to get more or less detail in the structures, however I found I really like this viewpoint in the right most image. I love how its just visible though the fog, and the power lines draw your eye towards it. I hadn't planned the centre image, and it was actually one of the last I took, but I like how the symmetry works, I feel it creates a really dominate photo, and it works well to link to the other two.

Beauty in the Banal - Research
"New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape" was an exhibition curated by William Jenkins in 1975. Jenkins had seen in the work of photographers such as Robert Adams, Stephen Shore and Lewis Baltz was an interest in the created landscapes of 1970′s urban America. Their almost fine art images of a mundane but oddly fascinating land was a reflection of the increasingly constructed world around them. The photographers in this movement shot to react against the work of pioneering landscape and nature photographers who shot idealised landscapes, and seen a shift in the world of photography away from this tradition.

-Robert Adams
Robert Adams was one of the most prolific photographers of this movement. Born in 1937, his work came to prominence in the mid-70’s through his book ‘The New West’ and the aforementioned exhibition “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape”. His work created a poignant sentiment of the changes made to the American west by humans. How nature and the natural landscape had been permanently altered. His images create an eerie environment which, buildings sitting alone, usually in a contrasting environment. The lack of people in the majority of his images echoes back to the grand vistas commonly found in landscape photography, but is placed in direct contrast by the influence of man.
