Everyone is a Genius
This week's modules elaborated on many controversial subjects from politics to privacy online. I noticed that people online convince themselves that they have the willpower to overcome any negative consequences from interacting online. People constantly think they won't fall victim to consumerism, but many people find themselves buying more stuff then prior to social media ads being a thing. People don't notice the negative influences on their behavior that posting about controversial subjects online has on themselves.
These websites are designed to be addictive whether it be ads or just wanting to come back to have discussions online. The benefit is having discussions about things that would not be comfortable subjects in real life, but we miss the effects this has on our real life relationships and interactions. We all think we're managing it well, but clearly the world is changing in many ways for the worse. We have to realize we are not going to psychologically outsmart companies spending billions of dollars on research and data to take advantage of our human nature.

"It would be smarter to be cautious, because the Internet’s personality has changed. Once it was a geek with lofty ideals about the free flow of information. Now, if you need help improving your upload speeds the web is eager to help with technical details, but if you tell it you’re struggling with depression it will try to goad you into killing yourself."
