Assessment 3 - Final Work
Tumblr media
Instructions: Stare at the red dot for at least 15 seconds then look up to a wall or blank surface and blink.
Concept Statement: Do You Not See It is a minimalist optical illusion artwork that explores the idea of the human species’ skewed perception.
While focusing on perception, I wanted to create a final work that makes the viewer really assess the strength of their senses and perception, in turn, question what they believe to be true and false. Every day we use different ways of knowing to apprehend the world, but sense perception is the most vital source of knowledge. Sense perception is based on the usage of five senses, the ability to see, hear, touch, taste and feel. The faith placed in our perception determines how knowledge is received, and so, giving complete trust and confidence in our physical and neurological abilities may not be the best idea.
I decided to focus on sight perception and how unreliable it may be. In many cases, our sight can greatly deceive us, deeming it as somewhat of an unreliable way of receiving knowledge.
Do You Not See It was developed through creating a series of optical illusion experiments. Through these experiments, I found that if I focused on a screen for a prolonged amount of time, the ghosts of that screen travelled with my eyes. From the exhausted visual stimulation, the sight malfunctions and begins to see something that isn’t there.
Do You Not See It shows how our senses can prove unreliable in accurately presenting knowledge and as each person see’s things differently and in some cases, we see things that aren’t there, the question of what is real can be raised.
Do you not see that our senses aren’t true?

Ass3 - Experiment #5
Tumblr media
How reliable are our eyes?
I made this simple outline to test that. Stare at the red dot for 10-15 seconds then look at a wall or solid object and blink.
We start to see what isn’t physically in front of us.
This is an interesting optical illusion that I discovered when looking at my computer screen for so long.

Ass3 - Experiment #4
Tumblr media
In this experiment, I decided to play with gradients.
The background of this image is a simple gradient but I then put a rectangular bar just filled with a grey shade.
Surprisingly, the eye depicts this rectangular bar as a gradient.
I tried experimenting with various colours but black and white seems to work the best.

Ass3 - Experiment #3

I decided to do some more experiments involving typography. With this one, I hid a message in some text.

Ass3 - Experiment #2
Tumblr media
I decided to move my experiments to digital. Here I just inserted random characters around a hidden word. It reminds me off a find-a-word (I haven’t seen those in a while!).
I added the red to drag the eyes to that section.

Ass3 - Experiment #1
I decided to do some simple experiments involving Gestalt’s Theory of Perception. In particular, I experimented with the theory of closure.
Basically, the mind fills in the gaps of the images due to the objects and images we have percieved in the past.

Ass3 - Research
I thought I’d start out with researching some artists who work with the idea of perception.
I stumbled upon Esther Stocker, an Italian painter known for her trippy installations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her works are always based on grid structures, always black and white and plays with the idea of “chaos vs. order, reality vs. fiction, foreground vs. background, precision vs. elusiveness, certainty vs. ambiguity”.
The glitches and imperfections of her work put assumptions of the world around us to the test.

Experiment 2 - Samples/Perception
Musician Joji makes lo fi, jazzy beats off of exisiting samples and transform its emotion into something completely different. In this case he sampled Willson Pickett ‘In the Midnight Hour,’ to ‘i’m gonna rape.’ A motown friendly vibe to a much gritty explicit tone.
I do not own the rights to either songs. Credits to 88rising, Motown, Stax, Atlantic Records, Joji and Warner Music Group

11/4/19- Class Task
Making a wearable that changes our perceptions of one of the senses.
My group chose hearing. We used two coffee cups and stuffed toilet paper in them. We then made a voice recording in the stairwell where we screamed and ran up the stairs. Wireless earphones were placed into the coffee cups and users would place the cups around their ears.

Assignment One: Final Work
Tumblr media
BOX
BOX is a graphical typeface utilising the lines and angles of the standard cardboard box. It incorporates visual perspective through the use of gradients, using shadows and highlights that imitate a directional light source.
The angles and perspective used creates a somewhat paradoxical geometric object, portraying folds that would be absurd and illegal in the everyday life.
BOX was conceived through analysing the visual nature of different shapes and sizes of parallelograms in 3D modelling software’s. Through staggering and stacking different parallelograms, the experiments began to imitate a Tetris-like aesthetic. These are a group of shapes derived from tetrominos and polyominoes, plane geometric figures formed by connecting one or more squares edge-to-edge. From this experiment, it became apparent that some of these formed figures imitated the basic structure of letters within the alphabet. The shapes of the letters ‘L’, ‘E’ and ‘F’ were apparent within my experiments. From there, I began to sketch letters, using the vertices of several shaped boxes as reference. These letters were then vectorised in Adobe Illustrator and stylised with different shades to imitate an isometric design. Overall, BOX comments on the fluidity of materials, taking the material often used to write on (cardboard) and transformed into something to write with.

Assignment One Experiment: Rough Draft of Typeface
Here’s a rough draft of what I have so far. I think some of the letters still need some work. For example:
B is a bit weird (doesn’t match the rest of the letters
J and L are too simple and need more angles
N is too similar to H
U needs more angles
X and Y don’t look right
Tumblr media
These are my favourite letters so far, I might be keeping these as they are!
