The real thing with ADHD is not "I forgot", but that forgetting is this ongoing process. I remembered! And then I forgot.
At ten this (hypothetical) morning I remembered that I have a meeting at six. And then from 11 through 3 I worked on other stuff and had zero thoughts about that meeting. Maybe even thought about what I was gonna do with my evening at home. Got attached to the idea of taking the time to make a good dinner, maybe play some video games.
And then at three I said, "Oh! Fuck!" and remembered again, hopefully long enough to set an alarm. And then I went to the bathroom and remembered that I need to clean the counter and spent twenty minutes cleaning the bathroom and went to get a snack and then at five I said, "OH! FUCK!" and had to scramble to dress like a real adult and get out the door.
It isn't one clean forgetting. It's a constant process of forgetting and then, with an exhausting adrenaline spike, remembering. And then forgetting. Baby, I can forget the same thing more times in a day than you ever forgot your parents' anniversary.

one of my favorite things about the city watch cast of characters is how important carrot was clearly supposed to be and how he ends up as set dressing. there's so many scenes in the later books where it could have been carrot in the room and it's angua instead.
are you man? are you dog? are you man?

-from Men At Arms
Meant to be a piece focused on Vimes' gender and then it got away from me. I think there's a lot of ways in which the books play around with Vimes' masculinity and how it relates to the roles given to him - Husband, Guardsman, Duke, all identities thrust upon him more than anything else. And there is a sort of struggle of toxic masculinity inherent to Vimes' character, particularly in his relationship to violence (which makes the hyper masculine romanticizing of vimes in fifth elephant all the more lame... But that's another topic).
This is all to say that:

oh, ok. I've been summoned.
first reason is that likenesses are hard to begin with. comics already needs artists who understand and can act upon a wildly varying set of skills. likenesses are kind of low on that list, somewhere between 'can draw a building' and 'isn't shitty to the interns'. artists really do need to be a little bit in love with everything they make for it to sing; comics based on real life people really do need artists who love the ip in order to show love in the likenesses.
those people exist:

However, there's reasons why the insides of comics don't look like this. The first is available talent. For example, Dan Mora (he drew the Shatner art) is about 6 in the top 10 comics art talent on the planet for mainstream comics rn. He’s not going to draw star trek comics, because star trek comics don't pay superman page rates.
the second reason is talent pairings. this looks like older art - most of what im saying here is with that assumption in mind, and it's entirely possible that the penciller and inker were two different people. [edit: i've now looked this up - it's 90's era art, the talent was indeed split] a penciller can absolutely nail a likeness and the inker might then just ruin it. the inking here has zero nuance - maybe someone just starting out in their career. or maybe they weren't getting paid enough to really give the piece the time it deserved. (pre-digital inking was nib pen and brushwork, drying times, white out & erasing the pencils, it was no joke.) or maybe the talent mismatch was an editor who was grumpy that they got star trek comics when they wanted the hulk and was too sulky to properly police the necessary revisions on the art.
the third reason is value. star trek is having a Renaissance right now. people who weren't alive when next gen aired are pounding it. Brave New Worlds and Lower Decks are triggering rewatches of ToS and DS9. ships that were once little whispers on the queer outskirts are mainstream. trek has a ton of artistic value right now. that Bashir comic looks old, which means it was likely 90s era. the 90s were a decade where comics were the most lucrative they have ever been, so a lot of big consumer products departments were shoving non-comic IP into comics releases. these types of moves are usually made by people who don't understand why things like comics or star trek are popular in the first place, so the value of the output is low. not great at being either comics or star trek. (another great example of this is the GN adaptations of Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. The Mort GN was fine.)
tldr: they suck bc art is hard, the team probably wasn't very good or getting paid well, and no one gave a fuck about trek then.
the current IDW trek comics run has pretty good likenesses imo, by comics likeness standards.

Why do Star Trek comics always look like this? Who the fuck is that guy and why am I being told it's Julian Bashir?
