Social Class

Some people are treated unfairly in their society, which may cause some conflicts in their community. Such as, lower class people UAE who are not from VIP families and who have limited income; they are suffering from discrimination when they go to apply for a job. Usually in UAE, if you have good relationships with people and have a strong intermediary with someone, you will get what you want easily even if it is a job. Otherwise it is hard to get what you want or you have to find a strong intermediary.

If you are popular means when you have a big group of people and you are very well known person, it’s determines your status. Sometimes, your reputation and the amount of respect you receive from others can be a reason of what you are today and can give you a special attention. However, it is the opposite with working class people.

Moreover, person’s personality gives an impression to people and that might avoid the question of which social class you belong to. The high-class people get’s attention more than middle class people, while the working class get’s less attention and sometimes they loss their rights. The sociologists divided these categories into three types according to their income, economic, education situation, health situation, their status in the community and their political power in the social area, which are: high class, middle class and working class.

  The café use of social media led to massive success promoting its services. They are doing social media promotions via twitter and Instagram to post pictures of services they offer to their clients. 

  The interview was with this project owner, Badr Ebrahiem on the telephone on Jan 2, 2014 and we discussed the following questions:

  # What was your expectation before starting your business?

  -                The idea was to bring range of hospitality environments from worldwide cultures to create special warmhearted hosting to our customers.  And thanks to all my friends here in Marbella café who worked sincerely, we had a result that was bigger than our expectations.

  # How did you managed to promote your project to customers?  

-                At first we had Ads in streets in form of banners to let our customers from other areas know that we are exist. We also print out large number of brochure and published it in the area and the nearby area like houses, markets, and public places even the companies and the governmental institutions. People gradually started to call us to know more about the café and its services. From the beginning our business have been very successful and very turnout because our business is kind of unique and we don’t have any competitors, so that was one of our strength I think.

-                The other method that allowed our customers to have a bigger picture about us was the social media accounts we had. We used different kind of social media like Instagram, twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube and Tumblr accounts to get large number of costumers from different nationalities especially local people. We provided all information about the café and its services along with contact numbers, location. Social media had a positive impact on our business; it helped our business to grow up and became famous in the town and outside the area. We have thousand followers follow us in our accounts; so many of our customers knew about our café via social media. Actually, social media promote our business more than other form of advertisements because I think social media provide you all information about what you want to know with pictures and video and also you can leave your comment there if you wish. It’s easy to communicate with people so I chose this method because I am confident that social media will help my business go on and thrives.

# What’s the difference between advertising through with social media and the other forms of advertising and marketing?

I find advertising through social media is easier than other forms of advertising, because it gives you all the opportunities to communicate with people around you. On the other hand, it doesn’t cost you anything to print out your advertising or promote it through TV channels and radio. Social media saves your time and saves your effort as well as provide you freedom to use it for marketing your business and get your costumers’ feedback quickly.

  Through observing their social media traffic in Instagram and Twitter we found out that:

Instagram:

-                People are reacting freely in friendly way complementing their services and expressing how enjoyable was their experience in the café.

-                There were a lot of mentions that was in comments, which helped the account to have even more followers.

-                We noticed that the Instagram account was engaging local people more than other nationalities because most of the posts were in Arabic.

Twitter:

- The twitter account had posts and pictures of the services that was all of them in English, which helped to engage people from all nationalities in UAE.

  Black Rose Store is one of the successful fashion businesses in the UAE. Her business is about wide range of the finest and the most unique Abayas and fashionable dresses designed by her. Also, she has passion in designing and mixing patterns and fabrics and this made her special and well known in the region.

She aims to expand her business in all over the UAE and around GCC.

Furthermore, we asked her several questions about her marketing strategies. 

What form of media did you use to promote your name in the market when you started your business?

In the very beginning, I used to depend on the word of mouth strategy. My family and friends used to spread my name all around the region. In the earlier days we were not attached to the social media and we do nowadays. So my customers were almost whom I know or whom my friends and family know. 

What was the first social media did you use to advertise your business?

I started using BlackBerry messenger to advertise my business and this increased my sales. I got to have customers from other emirates rather than only Fujairah. BlackBerry messengers made my store name reach to Dubai and Abu Dhabi through few days or weeks!

What did you use after BlackBerry Messenger?

I created an account in Tumblr and started to post pictures and get people’s feedbacks. Then I had Instagram account and it made me more attached to the customers and it strongly increased the sales. I got now 65 thousand followers on Instagram. In addition, I created my own website so people can browse and shop online. Also, I created an application for Android and Apple. People can download it and view the latest collection and shop from their mobile devices.

How far would you reach using social media?

Success has no limits. And social media is invading the world so we have to keep ourselves updated and attached to this social network.

    UAE without advertisements

  Lets imagine that all the ads in UAE are banded, what will happen? If so, I think in the first year of banding ads will be very hard for those business that have few customers to promote their business, because not all people are using Internet these days to watch ads through it. Some people who don’t go shopping very much will be upset, confused and may object on this idea, because they depend on advertisements for their shopping, so they can choose their best products and items through ads. Some street and places will be empty from ads, especially in the city where the markets are placed.

After three years of banding ads, I think the situation will stay as it is and the negative impact of that will continue in the country, because it takes time for people to adapt with this situation. Some boards in the streets will removed and some of them will be given to street artists to use it in art purpose, so no more ads will be there. The small shops and new markets will affect more than big and popular shops, because they have less customers and don’t have enough budgets to print advertisements for people. On the other hand, some people will be tired of going markets regularly to see the new items there, whereas some businesses will study the situation and try to find other solution to promote their business.

Ten years after, people will accustomed with this situation and will find other way to promote their business, such as: some companies will send some of their stuff in public places to up date their products for them regularly. Some business will distribute brochures between people and spread some of them in the houses and companies; moreover they will advertise their products in public places.  Some business will use social networks and Internet to advertise their items and products.

After 20 years of banding ads in UAE, I think it will be familiar for people to use advertisements through Internet, newspapers, magazine, TV, radio and brochures, because they use technology in everything in their lives. All companies will have online version for their shop and post their ads on social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, which includes all their stuff and advertisements there. Some companies will exploit using some ads on their cars and some will use flashlights on the shop from out side to advertise their new items. There will be also big balloons out of the shop, which stick on them some ads. Overall, advertisements are important to promote the business and there are many methods that people can create to advertise their business between public.

Usually, the siblings have many similarities in their behaviors, personalities or they looks alike, but in my case it is totally different. Whenever any person meets my sister Nouf and I, they shocked and surprised when they know we are siblings and sometimes people think we are kidding. The most remarkable difference between us is resemblance. Although we are sisters, we don’t look like each other at all. She is very skinny and has a baby face, whereas I’m plump and my face looks like my mother. Unlike me, she has a small eyes and small nose. In addition to our resemblance, we both have different personalities. Nouf has a good and strong personality. She is very sociable person and she loves to talk with all people, while I’m less sociable and less boldness. In contrast, Nouf is very angry person and she makes the small things to a big issue. Whereas, I’m very cool person and calm and I don’t care about anything. On the other hand, our behaviors are also different, she takes her decision very thoroughness and she works hard not as me. I’m rather lazy and work very slowly. Also, she has a different style of wearing clothes unlike me.

When we see the similarities between us, we notice that we have a very few similarities. We both like Indian food and Bollywood films. Also, we both are kind and polite with everyone. The last similarity we noticed that we love to sleep for a long time.

Although we have one mother and one father, we are totally different from each other. I wish that at least only once people say, yes that we look like sisters!

That day when me and my sister "Nouf" planed to surprise our oldest sister "Nours" with some happiness after long time of her absence from the house. She was in her duty in Abu Dhabi and she didn't came to home since 3 weeks.

When she come home, she brings joy and love. I really like to chat with her and lough because she have a sweet personalty and sense of humour.

                                        I missed her so much.

                                                                 There is no doubt that house maids are became one of the important members in every emirate houses nowadays. At least, there is one maid in each house, but the large houses and families it’s insufficient to have one maid. This can be considered as one of the serious social problems in UAE these days. With progress of the time and households are getting busy in their works especially the mother, they need maids more than anything, who became one of the basics of home.

Maids can play the mother’s role in her absence at the daytime especially if the mother is worker. She handle all house works such as cooking, washing, cleaning and raising children. Whereas, children learn many wrong behaviors from the maid which is not their cultural as well as some of them do some violence against the children while the mother not there. This can harm the child’s personality and there spirit. It becomes like a horror serial that have no end in every emirate house, because this situation can affect on the family and their children negatively by changing their religious and cultural values, their language and social development and children’s behavioral patterns also. In addition sometimes housemaids can do a crime that usually be in retaliation of paterfamilias. All that can create a new bitter reality that must be stopped in its limit.

On the other hand, sometimes the wrong comes from the paterfamilias itself, that makes housemaids in horror while doing their duty. There are many problems that can be created by household for maids. Sometimes, paterfamilias or other member of the family order the maid to do some difficult works that she can’t do, so they doubles her work as a punishment  for her. Some families deduct the salary of them if there was any mistakes they did. Whereas, some paterfamilias like father or brother can rape the maids when they obtain the chance, this creates so many problems that sabotages the reputation of this family and both sides are punishable by law.

Aisha Abdulla is an emirate woman who is a mother of two children ( 9 years and the other is 6 months ), and she works as a government employee. Aisha expressed her experience since 8 years when she ensured maid of Indonesia nationality who is non-Muslim to do housework  and her child care too in her absence. She was completely oblivious from her child new behaviors after one year of the maid accommodation in her house. Spending long time with maid also had effect on  his language totally which make him talk as a maid language. After a while, Aisha noticed the changes on her child and he won’t go to her, he’s looking out to maid. He started to do some strange acts such as religious rituals of maid because of his repeated follow-up to her while she is doing the rituals. That what shocked Aisha when she saw her son doing strange acts, stressing that he didn’t stop doing that after reprimanded him! She said: “ If my son remain in this condition, obviously I will lose him one day”.

            Maithah Mohammed is 20 years old, a daughter of Mohammed Khalfan from Dibba, who have 2 maids at home. She said that her father now is punished by the low in the prison, in their maid torture case, which caused many terrible injuries to the maid in different parts of her body, and necessitated her to the hospital for treatment and all that just because she didn’t bring for him cup of tea quickly. The family lose their reputation after this case and passing in a tough time.

In both cases, the both sides are affected from the certain conditions that they are passing whether the mistake was from household or maids. The social scientist Mohammad Abdalradi explained that local newspapers recently published on the front page many of the incidents and issues which stating to the maids’ file that are recorded in underworld, which is not just related to the children behaviors, but it’s also related to their reaction of the house owner orders, and that make them revenge through violence and crime, indicating that there are also some cases against the households which is unfortunately became serious problem in UAE.

New media Vs Old media

             What if the media didn’t improved since the last 40 years ago? I guess life will be boring and littlie tricky for many people like businessmen and students.

Here I’m going to give some differences between the old media and new media & technology, and to do that, I interviewed ‘Amina Mohammed’ my mother who is 45 years old to help me do this analyses. 

            First, I start my interview by asking her about the old media in that time and how big it was spread between people? How did they look like and what were the available channels? First of all, she said that there are radical changes that happened in media through the years, which completely improved nowadays. She said in the past very few people especially rich one were using media forms in their houses, because it was expensive; they often use television and radio.

Old media

                               ——TV——

Many people gather in one of these houses and enjoy watching the black & white movies and the serials including the news in hours which make there relationship strong with the other people around. There were 2 TV channels were available in that time, which are Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia and all of them were closed in the midnight. The common television was like a big box, which has a small 2D screen in the center and all the channels buttons were in the right of screen with a big aerial at the top of the box to catch the available channels.

                  ——Radio——

She adds; radio was cheaper than television, which usually comes with a big box and an aerial to set the FM channels. She said that they were enjoying  listening to the radio, which keeps them in touch with the world all the time.

                 ——Telephone——

We also talked about landline telephone, which she said changed their life to better and make it easy to communicate with their family and friends. It had many different shapes, but the common one was big with a big headset with round shape numbers. Landline telephone was just found in few houses, so other people can use it by paying for each call they do because it cost them too much.

 New Media

After that, I asked her about the new media and the new technology which totally have changed from the past. She said: “I’m wondering how could this world changed like this! It’s great feeling to live in these two different stages of life.” She said these days; you will find media and the new technology everywhere in the world. The television developed and became in colors with 3D and 2D screen and remote control. It has many different shape and sizes, which sometimes it can be like cinema screen that you may fit in your own house. Also you can hang it on the wall or wherever you want. Then, we talked about the radio. The radio also has changed to many forms and became very familiar with all people nowadays. Radio tape player has many different sizes and shapes. You can find it everywhere, in cars, in houses, you can play it on your mobile phone, on IPads even on your laptop. With increases of radio popularities, there become lots of radio stations with may channels.

On the other hand, telephone spread significantly in all over the world and it became one of the smartest technology that affect on people’s lives. Mobile phones have become an alternative for the landline telephone, but people still use landline telephone just in certain places like offices. Many big companies such as Apple, Samsung and BlackBerry are competing each other to launch the latest smart mobile phone in the market, which characterized by social media and Internet. Nowadays, even children have their own mobile phone to be in contact with outside world.

The most interesting point that I didn’t know about was when people were gathering in one house they spend hours in to watch television without any breaks. They bring their food and drinks to eat together, which makes their relationship strong.

In my point view, I think the development that happened in media and technology through the year have changed the society, cultural and make a strong communication between the people by using new social media. Actually it controlled our life and people depend on it in their life.
