Wonder Woman (Review)
Though it stumbles at the start, Wonder Woman‘s mature handling of the period and interesting characters help propel the film to heights never before reached within the DC Extended Universe. The beginning of the film is (arguably) its weakest moment.  It has the unenviable job of establishing this Greek fantasy setting of Themyscira, kingdom of the warrior women known as Amazons.  It has to

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Review)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Review)
The soundtrack to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are probably the reason I’ll end up buying a Vinyl player. Guardians of the Galaxy was definitely one of the better movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 2 series of films.  It was unique, it was funny, the characters were instantly likable and even if the plot served more to add context to the MCU’s overarching story and it suffered

Beauty and the Beast (Review)
Beauty and the Beast (Review)
The live action Cinderella was better. The 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite animated films ever.  When I heard that Disney was adapting the animated film into a live-action film, as they’ve been doing recently, I was excited but also skeptical.  Previous live-action remakes of classic Disney films have been hit or miss for me.  Maleficent was all kinds of bizarre

The Fate of the Furious (Review)
The Fate of the Furious (Review)
Binge watch The Fast and the Furious franchise and take a shot every time someone mentions “family.” I haven’t been keeping up with the “Fast and the Furious” franchise.  The last movie I actually watched all the way through was the first one back in 2001. I saw a few moments of 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift but had no real interest in continuing to watch the series.  It seemed to be a

Egyptian cartoonist sheds light on 10 discriminatory laws against women
if you guys haven’t seen Doaa el-Adl’s work she’s an excellent cartoonist and her new book just came out (it’s in English and Arabic! although i’m not sure how you can buy it outside Egypt) so I wanted to share some of her stuff highlighting discriminatory laws from a profile on her for international women’s day.
Tumblr media
Inheritance rights: Many women are denied their rights to inheritance due to slow litigation procedures and the complexity of judicial procedures, which often leads to the women missing out on what was supposedly “her right” to begin with.
Tumblr media
Sexual Harassment in the workplace: Even though sexual harassment is deemed a crime according to Egyptian law, collective sexual assault crimes, anal penetration, oral rape, rape by a foreign object, as well as other forms of sexual violence remain not adequately criminalized. Women’s rights are not protected when they are faced with such circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adultery laws: The Egyptian law also discriminates between a man and a woman when the perpetrator of the crime of adultery is killed. Should the husband kill his wife when he finds her committing adultery, his sentence will be mitigated. However, if the wife kills her husband for adultery, then Article 273 of the penal code stipulates that the wife shall receive a severe sentence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Human trafficking and adultery laws: There is a widespread of marriage of underage girls in impoverished villages, where young girls are married off to wealthy Arabs or foreigners for a short period of time; then they get divorced. The government has not combated this phenomenon. Rather, in 2015, the government amended the law on marriage to stipulate that if the groom is foreign and 25 years older than the bride, he must pay her EGP 50,000 at the time the marriage contract is registered.
Tumblr media
The right to travel independently: This caricature shows how a girl is rebelling and fighting so hard to get out of “a man’s shadow”, through the use of colors, and character sizes, the woman is putting in a great effort to leave the man’s grip. In Egyptian law, despite the constitutional court issuing a decree granting women the right to travel without prior permission from her father or husband, this right can be restricted by a male family member who applies for a court decision to be issued which prevents her from travelling.
Tumblr media
Domestic workers: They are running after the vase and not the woman. Unfortunately, domestic workers’ rights are non-existent in Egypt. They are a huge segment of society in Egypt and no one voices their concerns and issues. They are extremely marginalized and deprived from their basic rights concerning labor, social security, and health insurance

The Belko Experiment (Review)
The Belko Experiment (Review)
For a film touted as being “Office Space meets Battle Royale,” I had trouble finding any amount of humor in this movie. The Belko Experiment offers an interesting premise: 80 office workers are trapped in a building and told to kill each other or else the bombs implanted in their heads will explode.  It’s a twist on the Battle Royale-type horror genre that’s found a niche within the market,

Literally since its inception, the Asian-American community has been against Iron Fist and its gross cultural appropriation. Continuous, ongoing criticism for the last forty years, but yeah sure listen to the FOUR WHOLE PEOPLE telling you what you wanna hear so you don't feel guilty
this. the Iron Fist comic was criticised for cultural appropriation from day one. and like if they continue to pull the ‘read the comic’ card they could listen to, idk, words from a comic writer who worked for Marvel, Marjorie Liu, who clearly spelt it out to them
Tumblr media
but of course Asian American and their opinions don’t matter until yt can use them to their advantages, and then it’s all ‘my asian friends said it was okay uwu’
