Choosing a career is probably one of the most difficult decisions that you make in your life. You come to an age in which everyone is pressuring you to be sure about what you want to do the rest of your life and sometimes you might feel extremely confused about what you want (and it definitely doesn’t help at all to have people telling you how important it is to figure out it). At least that was my case and I found myself regretting what I chose because I made that decision too fast and decided not to question it again.
So how the hell are we supposed to know what to do ? If you’re someone that always felt a connection with certain interest then you’re incredibly lucky. But if you’re someone who’s lost because you either find everything of your interest and don’t know what to persue, or you have absolutely no passions or interests, then it’s incredibly difficult to choose something properly and quick.
These are some factors that we always consider when we choose a career:
Time
When I was 17, I was pressured by everyone to know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I couldn’t be doubting still at that age. I was in senior year and it was going to end soon, what was I going to do next? I couldn’t be wasting more time in a decision I needed quick. First mistake: believing I had no time.
When you’re confused you do need time and you actually do have all the time in the world to think about your decision. There’s no such thing like “you’re already in senior year, you have to know already”. It’s your life, it’s your decision and someone who’s not inside your mind can’t have the pleasure to tell you that you need to know.
Giving yourself time to think about it is not wasting it. It’s actually thinking and analising the situation better.
People’s input
In my experience, I’ve realised that sometimes it’s better not to completely express to other people that you are having way too many doubts about choosing a career. Why? Because they decide to put their input. And sometimes, it can confuse you even more and give you unnecessary pressure.
It could be better to keep it to yourself, at least when you’re about to make the decision, and avoid someone else’s influence define you and make a mistake.
Don’t let absolutely no one understimate your decisions or make you feel less for not knowing yet.
Research
If you need info to consider a career, see if it’s for you or not, check frustrations, difficulties and advantages, then YES, DO IT. Go for it. Do your research and look for people that could guide you and so you can either feel prepared or sure about it.
Look for blogs, experiences of people in the field you like, someone in an university or college that you’d like to attend, someone who can tell you how the career applies to certain jobs, anything. The best thing that could help you realise if it’s for you, is the experience and frustrations that someone had in the career. It won’t define your decision but it’ll help you and let you know the reality of that career.
Don’t expect a career to be extremely perfect and that you’d love every aspect of it. There’ll be classes you don’t like, or teachers you hate. Any career has its things.
The “follow your passion” advice
This is, in my opinion, the worst but most common advice you get when choosing a career. It’s great when you already have an inclination for something but when you don’t, it just doesnt help and could make your further decision unbearable.
It sounds motivational and inspiring but when you just don’t have a big passion (or a passion in general) it makes you feel like you have to quickly find something to make your entire life about.
And boom, mistake. You choose something quick and later realise that it probably was never for you. And you feel miserable and embarrassed and ugh, plain terrible!
Check this amazing video by Thomas Frank on why this is a bad advice when you’re lost.
So, how do I know?
Have on mind that you’ll need time for that.
Exploring, getting into the interests, finding and trying everything will somehow help you understand what you like or what could be a potential interest that with effort and time, you’ll end up loving it.
Don’t feel miserable because you weren’t born knowing that you’d be a doctor, architect, lawyer or super hero. The reality is that most of us are still lost and with doubts.
It might take time and it’s worth it.
Frustrations
There are common frustrations you might phase when choosing or after choosing. A general overview is:
I have absolutely no passions for anything
Highfive my friend, major highfive. You’re not alone.
Let’s say that you enjoy reading a bit and cooking. Liked some biology classes but you and math are like oil and water. What would you choose? Literature? Gastronomy? Medicine? “Nah, my friend. I don’t find passion for any”. It happens, it just happens. Sometimes you might think that you have one big major passion because of that bloody “follow you passion” advice. But no, you don’t have to immediately or necessarily love something endlessly to be a good professional and do a good work.
It’s a matter of exploring and effort. Experience, skills and excellence will let you know what you’re passionate about.
These are phrases taken by Thomas Frank’s video said by Mark Cuban and it’s amazingly true:
When you work hard at something, you become good at it.
When you become good at doing something, you will enjoy it more.
When you enjoy doing something, there is a very good chance you will become passionate or more passionate about it.
When you’re good at something, passionate and work even harder to excel and be the best at it, good things happen.
And that’s exactly what I’m going through in dental school and with a career I chose randomly, quickly, with no info about it and that at some point, I hated deeply.
I fucked up with my decision, now what?
Hello again my friend, we seem to be connected.
It seems like there are only 2 options:
1) You change your career: if you feel like you know what you were actually made for and you’re sure of another career then go for it! Good luck. You amazing person don’t care about the mistake and are able to choose happiness.
Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed of choosing something you actually didn’t like. Be actually proud of being able of recognising it and fight for what you want. We envy you, really.
2) You get over it and decide to make a good work despite of it: we’re not born to do something and we’re too dumb to see it clearly. You actually build what you’re good for.
So let’s imagine you hate what you chose but you still don’t find passion or interest for something. You can either go for other options, this time doing research and building experience on the field or you either insist to know if you actually hate it or if it’s something else. Maybe you dislike your uni/college, maybe you dislike the education system in your country, maybe the teachers or classmates are the ones making you hate it. Analise before giving up.
Putting your effort and dedication could end up making you love it. And believe me, you wouldn’t be the only one. The most amazing professionals I’ve met on my area have gone through this and later built their good work.
In conclusion, choosing a career is one very important decision in which you need time and curiosity more than anything. Don’t be ashamed of your mistakes or concerns, and definitely don’t let someone else make you feel bad about your doubts. You can do anything if you want to, the only person standing in your way is you.
Thanks for reading this major post. I hope I helped somehow. If you have any doubts, concerns or need guidance in my career or just in the fact of choosing something for your entire life don’t feel afraid to contact me. Cheers x
I would like to make a video out of this topic because I sincerely have so so so much to say. But that’ll depend on you guys.

hey guys!!!
so this entire past month has been extremely, extremely stressful for me because i had so many exams and i only realised how hideously unprepared i was for them on the day before the exam, which was really really awful. so in the middle of september i created a studyblr to keep myself motivated + get some helpful tips from the studyblr community on how to go abt studying for tests. the results proved to be super helpful and ive resolved to keep running this blog for as long as i can, because it really helps me stay motivated and i’ve already learned so many things from the community, despite the fact that i’ve only been here for around a month.
but anyways, i decided to create this masterpost in order to help others stay motivated + keep studying not only well but also properly i.e. not necessarily studying for exams but life in general, if that makes sense.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS!
Take 15 minute breaks when your brain can’t function any longer or after some time. Play Temple Run, nap, shower, stretch, fix yourself a snack, use the internet, etc. But don’t forget to set the timer.
Don’t attempt to pull all nighters. You don’t want to fall asleep on the commute to school - you might be mugged. You also don’t want to fall asleep during class - you will be humiliated and you will fall behind.
Be on time. As for me, my classes start at 3pm, Mondays to Saturdays. I leave my house at 12pm because it is a two and a half hour commute at the most. I could always stay at the library to squeeze in some studying time if I arrive in uni early.
Don’t wear eyeliner or mascara or any make up that would get smudged especially if you are a careless person who tends to rub eyes when flustered. You don’t wanna waste time in reapplying your make up.
Don’t do the 3Ds: doodling, dozing off, daydreaming.
Recite, report, volunteer for extra credit, ask questions.
Have one study buddy who doesn’t mind having company. You could work quietly but side by side or you could study together while interacting. Have a rendezvous point. Also set your studying sessions on a specific time.
Get some of your homework done on vacant times.
Multitask if possible. So you can get more done.
Anticipate surprise quizzes, exams, recitations. So study a lot. Reread all your notes. Read everything. READ!
Learn how to make coffee. Stock up on snacks and/or candies.
Get an internship as soon as possible. It will be very impressive.
Make your syllabus your rule book. Follow everything on it.
Press save a lot. Back up all your files.
Take all deadlines seriously. It’s better if you finish your assignment a week or two before the deadline.
Take good care of yourself.

Transition Words For Your Essays
Transition Signals:
Transitions are words and phrases that connect ideas and show how they are related.
To repeat and ideas just stated:
In other words,
That is,
To repeat,

To illustrate an idea:
For example,
For instance,
In particular,
To illustrate,

To announce a contrast, a change in direction:

However,
Still,
Nevertheless,

In contrast,
Instead of,
On the contrary,
Conversely,
Notwithstanding,
In spite of this,

At once,
In the interim,
At length,
Immediately,
At last,
Meanwhile,
In the meantime,
Presently,

Strong words to use on a Resume
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you have ever had to write a resume for work or for an application, then you know the hardest part is figuring out what type of words to use that sound professional and and intelligent.
Example: If an application asks you if you have any relevant experience for a job at a day care center and you have experience, like you have babysat children. You would look at the words in the columns to see what words you should use that will help your resume stand out. You might put down “Have supervised and attended to children on a regular basis.”
I hope this is helpful to you.

How to Study Like a Harvard Student
Taken from Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, daughter of the Tiger Mother
Preliminary Steps 1. Choose classes that interest you. That way studying doesn’t feel like slave labor. If you don’t want to learn, then I can’t help you. 2. Make some friends. See steps 12, 13, 23, 24. General Principles 3. Study less, but study better. 4. Avoid Autopilot Brain at all costs. 5. Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 6. Write it down. 7. Suck it up, buckle down, get it done. Plan of Attack Phase I: Class 8. Show up. Everything will make a lot more sense that way, and you will save yourself a lot of time in the long run. 9. Take notes by hand. I don’t know the science behind it, but doing anything by hand is a way of carving it into your memory. Also, if you get bored you will doodle, which is still a thousand times better than ending up on stumbleupon or something. Phase II: Study Time 10. Get out of the library. The sheer fact of being in a library doesn’t fill you with knowledge. Eight hours of Facebooking in the library is still eight hours of Facebooking. Also, people who bring food and blankets to the library and just stay there during finals week start to smell weird. Go home and bathe. You can quiz yourself while you wash your hair. 11. Do a little every day, but don’t let it be your whole day. “This afternoon, I will read a chapter of something and do half a problem set. Then, I will watch an episode of South Park and go to the gym” ALWAYS BEATS “Starting right now, I am going to read as much as I possibly can…oh wow, now it’s midnight, I’m on page five, and my room reeks of ramen and dysfunction.” 12. Give yourself incentive. There’s nothing worse than a gaping abyss of study time. If you know you’re going out in six hours, you’re more likely to get something done. 13. Allow friends to confiscate your phone when they catch you playing Angry Birds. Oh and if you think you need a break, you probably don’t. Phase III: Assignments 14. Stop highlighting. Underlining is supposed to keep you focused, but it’s actually a one-way ticket to Autopilot Brain. You zone out, look down, and suddenly you have five pages of neon green that you don’t remember reading. Write notes in the margins instead. 15. Do all your own work. You get nothing out of copying a problem set. It’s also shady. 16. Read as much as you can. No way around it. Stop trying to cheat with Sparknotes. 17. Be a smart reader, not a robot (lol). Ask yourself: What is the author trying to prove? What is the logical progression of the argument? You can usually answer these questions by reading the introduction and conclusion of every chapter. Then, pick any two examples/anecdotes and commit them to memory (write them down). They will help you reconstruct the author’s argument later on. 18. Don’t read everything, but understand everything that you read. Better to have a deep understanding of a limited amount of material, than to have a vague understanding of an entire course. Once again: Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 19. Bullet points. For essays, summarizing, everything. Phase IV: Reading Period (Review Week) 20. Once again: do not move into the library. Eat, sleep, and bathe. 21. If you don’t understand it, it will definitely be on the exam. Solution: textbooks; the internet. 22. Do all the practice problems. This one is totally tiger mom. 23. People are often contemptuous of rote learning. Newsflash: even at great intellectual bastions like Harvard, you will be required to memorize formulas, names and dates. To memorize effectively: stop reading your list over and over again. It doesn’t work. Say it out loud, write it down. Remember how you made friends? Have them quiz you, then return the favor. 24. Again with the friends: ask them to listen while you explain a difficult concept to them. This forces you to articulate your understanding. Remember, vague is bad. 25. Go for the big picture. Try to figure out where a specific concept fits into the course as a whole. This will help you tap into Big Themes – every class has Big Themes – which will streamline what you need to know. You can learn a million facts, but until you understand how they fit together, you’re missing the point. Phase V: Exam Day 26. Crush exam. Get A.
