Text
my poor girl. my poor Rhiannon Lewis. The tv show muzzled you and took out all your teeth. Your spice. Your vile little gremlin essence. Your humour. Your intelligence. There is only one single moment I saw a tiny bit of book Rhiannon on screen.
I love Ella, but if she read the books, she must have been disappointed that the tiger got transformed into a mouse.
I also don't like the changing of some things in her past, as Rhiannon ponders on the nature vs nurture question. Was she lost from that moment? Could it have been any different? It was really interesting.
Also, I hate the fact that her targets have been switched to BULLIES, when we're in a male on female violence epidemic. Still being murdered. Domestic Abuse is rampant. SA rates are ridiculous and let's not talk about trying to get justice after being r. Girls are still abandoned around the world because everyone wants a boy. The tendrils of patriarchy still has us by the neck. Human rights are being stripped. I could go on but I won't.
All that. So why change it to fucking bullies? Her going after her type allows for a lot of questions and discussions throughout the novel. Some people support her, others find it wrong, others find it "wrong but I'm fine with it." It allows a lot of questions of morality throughout the books.
Rhiannons' true weakness for murder shenanigans are sexual predators/abusers and people like it. She has killed outside this, but those of that kind of where her true passion lies. Why take this part of her story away? To make it more palatable?
Rhiannon wasn't written to be palatable to the masses, especially if they were aiming for her to be palatable for men. She was written by a very pissed off women for other pissed off women. Who for once, wanted to see a character who goes after the depraved and wins. I want my messy "monster" women. I want to read about bad women. I want to read about complicated almost black on the morality scale women. I want grit. I want to support womens wrongs. I don't need have my characters have to be morality right to be likeable.
I'll still support the show and I will get onboard eventually as I adore the books and I want to keep the author writing. I started reading them before book three had even come out. I'm hoping if they get a season two, they'll give her back her teeth and never utter the word "Bully" again. Sorry Ella, you deserved better. You're perfect for the role and would've probably had a lot of fun with book Rhi as she's a complicated actors dream.
Ps, I am trying not to go with too deep on spoilers, so if some points seemed half baked or generic, I am probably trying to skirt around spoilers, as I never know what the line is after someone cussed me out because I spoiled actual 500 year old history that people learn in school.
