The real power of XnView is the organizing your images, doing a few basic edit and sharing your photos via email or getting them to go to a social media site (nothing ”one click” automatically upload to those sites but there are the right tools to make the files the appropriate size and format). There are heaps of other well loved features that have come from the original XnView program. It can also write data to a subdirectory yyyy_mm_dd according to the day it was photographed and this is how I like to organize my files You can also add metadata and do some filtering by time (assuming the photo has EXIF data). Whilst XnView MP does build a catalogue entry and thumbnail at this time it is way faster than lightroom for example. It has a simple tools/import and sort feature that can load photo from a variety of dources (the can be camera, card readers, external drive, they just need to be connected to the computer and have a drive letter and/or folder directory.Also the XMP compatibility does not extend to post processing options (just the metadata and ratings).I can not write to xmp in picasa so this is a big plus. Again there is a small caveat in that XnView does not include a pick and reject flag (so useful in lighroom and other software) when first reviewing and culling newly loaded photos. You have to go into settings under the browser/metadata tab and click on the options highlighted on the right. Which means you can transfer rating and metadata into other photo mangers (that can read the adobe sidecar format). It now includes (from version 0.80) the ability to read and write metadata in.The downside is it converts the RAW image into an 8 bit jpeg, and thus you will loose a some of the potential dynamic range, I would not suggest that it is a fantastic replacement for other RAW editor but it is is an ok conversion. The newest version of XnViewer MP (0.81) may change my mind. It is a really simple to use but feature rich photo viewer/manager, I have also had XnViewer MP (a multi platform enhanced version) running on a repurposed Linux machine and my desktop computer and they do get frequently used, However picasa is still my go to application for loading organizing and culling new photos.

Justin Levine, former film critic of the Beverly Hills Weekly, as well as one of the hosts of ’s Film Fustians, is a huge fan of Taxi Driver. While it is not the only film to ever show the grittier side of Manhattan and its surrounding boroughs, it is the ultimate statement in 1970s film illuminating the need to brighten up the Big Apple, and a feeling of impending doom meeting the collapse of an empire permeates the film. Scorsese and Chapman created a very powerful argument for the need to revitalize New York City from where it had gotten to in those maligned days. Scorsese, in some ways, had an additional lead “actor” to use at his discretion to underline the core ugliness of the film with the wonderful cinematography of Michael Chapman bringing the sinister underbelly of mid-1970s New York City to life.Īs Bickle’s cab moves through the city and DeNiro’s voice-over describes what he is seeing and feeling, there really isn’t a better representation of this era of New York City in film. Sure, there was violence and profanity and brief nudity, but more importantly, it is gritty and dark and it is almost as if the term “adult themes” was created for this film entirely. There is a reason the film was rated R, even though by today’s standards it is fairly tame. There is good in Travis Bickle, and it resonates with the viewer, even as we watch him struggle more and more mightily with his alienation. Although, at no point in the film is he unable completely ignore beauty when he sees it. Some might call it madness, but it’s not madness, really, but a hyper-paranoia mixed with complete disdain for the hellish world he sees all around him. DeNiro masterfully demonstrated Bickle’s descent into frustration and violence. He is right there, right in the middle of all the action, yet incapable of truly connecting with anyone or anything. Travis Bickle is a man many people, especially today, can understand. Scorsese’s direction, though, was masterful in its restraint and slow unveiling of the main character's increasing alienation and eventual turn to violence as he attempts to protect Iris from the life she has seemingly wandered into as a young runaway.įor older viewers, the film can hit closer to home. Those under 15 or 16, more than anything, probably want to get right to the guns and right to the shooting as they may go into the film expecting the type of action the film’s reputation implies. For a young viewer, the pace of Taxi Driver is probably much too slow to tolerate, let alone Jodie Foster's spot-on portrayal of the preteen prostitute, Iris. If you have grown up with this film, each viewing probably has resonated with you differently. The key question, though, is why does this film affect people so strongly, even 40 years later? Taxi Driver is certainly a well-heralded piece of American film history, and whether you are discussing the technical aspects, such as Scorsese’s direction, Paul Schrader’s unforgettable screenplay, or Michael Chapman’s stellar cinematography, or the dramatic aspects like DeNiro’s Academy Award-nominated performance or the amazing supporting cast, almost everyone who has seen the film has a strong opinion about it. It has a timeless quality to it that belies its actual age, because it just seems like it has always been there (and if you were born after February 1976, it has always been there). But on the front-end, it would expose a common API that is provider agnostic.Įven just an open source GUI that allows you to store files in any provider, which would imply that in its source code exists the beginnings of such a middle layer. Of course since each provider offers a different web service for interacting with files, the middle layer would have adapter for each backend. I also don't know enough about WebDAV to know if it really would serve in the capacity I'm imagining. WebDAV for example is one potential candidate since it seems some storage services offer it, but that is not quite what I have in mind, since it depends on the storage providers to offer that as an option. As long as you backup your data, you could migrate to another provider and just reconfigure the app should you become unhappy with that provider or they go bankrupt. This way your use of that tool doesn't tie you to a specific cloud provider.

So maybe I wrote some chrome extension or portable thumb drive app for storing notes, or encrypting and storing passwords, or some such, and you tell it which cloud storage provider you have an account with, and it uses it for syncing. This would allow my front-end app to be cloud storage provider agnostic. Such that, if I wrote a front end for taking notes, and I utilized such an API, and let the user provide configuration for which cloud storage provider they have an account with, the API library would handle translating my cloud.Save() call into the commands specific to whiever provider was being utilized. Do any APIs/Libraries/tools exist that act as adapters/provider interfaces for accessing different cloud storage services through a common interface? Something similar to ODBC or OLE-DB, except for cloud storage instead of databases.
