Three Forms of Sciatica
Tumblr media
Following 8 years with the Bone and Joint clinic, orthopedic and spinal surgeon Dr. Zeshan Hyder started the Northwest Spine Institute. Dr. Zeshan Hyder and his team offer a range of pain management and corrective treatments and procedures for chronic spinal conditions such as sciatica. Also referred to as lumbar radiculopathy, sciatica pain can arise from several different conditions. Three of the most commonly diagnosed forms of sciatica include: Piriformis syndrome - The piriformis muscle stretches from the lower spine to the top of the femur bone, and passes over a portion of the sciatic nerve. If the muscle is damaged, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve. The pain usually subsides with physical therapy and exercise. Lumbar spinal stenosis - Sciatic nerve roots run through several lower vertebrae before extending into the legs and feet. If any of these vertebrae develop stenosis, which narrows the passage the nerve travels through, it can cause radiating pain. Stretches may be beneficial to prevent this disorder. Spondylolisthesis - A sudden trauma such as a fall may cause a fracture or movement in the vertebrae and cause them to push against the nerve. Cases that are not responsive to pain medication or manipulations may require steroid injections.
