All Might’s Mental Health is  Declining
Toshinori Yagi wanted to be a hero, wanted to help people ever since he was a boy
Tumblr media
and with Nana’s help, the quirkless kid got his wish.
Tumblr media
But being a hero isn’t for the weak of heart. You’re going to fail. People are going to be hurt. And ultimately, you’ll be alone. Toshinori had to learn this quickly in his life as Nana, his mother figure, died for him at an early age.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other person in his life, Gran Torino, trained him to the best of his abilities, but was a no nonsense, brutal teacher.
Tumblr media
His methods were effective, but scarring, as Toshinori has been terrified of him ever sense.
Tumblr media
He was sent to America on his own to develop his quirk, where he eventually learned to become a hero. But again, that meant work was his life, and he had no social life. Sure he was popular with the media, but as far as developing a lot of personal relationships, he wouldn’t have time for them. Plus, as typical of a hero, in order to keep everyone safe, All Might couldn’t be seen with people he was close to. He most likely kept himself busy the majority of the time to keep from being lost in his own thoughts. People need companions, it’s part of our make up. Toshinori’s surely had to have been a very lonely life.
And then All for One happened. And defeating him almost killed Toshinori, in fact, there’s no good reason he’s still alive, other than to pass on One For All, he should be dead. *Warning graphic details following*
Tumblr media
All for One said himself (English Translation), “A wounded hero is a most frightening animal. Do you know that even now, I sometimes dream of you charging at me with your entrails strewn across the ground.” His entrails. His internal organs. All Might was gravely wounded, yet he still forced himself to fight All For One, even while the hole in his side freely leaked his own body’s contents. In the picture above, All Might kneels above All For One’s lifeless body in a pool of blood, a mixture of both their blood. AFO’s head crushed.
I cannot stress enough the mental impact of this singular event. All Might stood for absolutely NO killing. He would resolve conflict while being careful NOT to kill or even critically hurt anyone. But in this instance, Toshinori killed a man. And the way he did, crushing a man’s head with his bare hands until the skull gave way and his brains were scattered on the pavement below. For someone who believes in no killing, this was a brutal execution. One that, unfortunately, had to happen for the safety of the world, and only All Might was capable of doing it.
Tumblr media
This alone must have severely messed with his head. While he lay in hospital, only capable of healing, AFO haunted his dreams and thoughts. He took another life, blood permanently staining his hands. And now he has to mentally pretend this never happened and act as if everything is fine to the public who hadn’t heard of this fight.
Despite the mental trauma from this, the physical trauma was worse. While he could fake the emotional lasting effects, he couldn’t hide the physical.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This injury took a lot more of him than just his mental stability. It took his stomach, a lung, most likely his spleen, and perhaps more internal organs. Living like this now means lots of medications. Supplements to make up for the lack of stomach, drugs to protect against infection, and pain medication to list a few. Something that big has to hurt like crazy. And all that scar tissue pulling while you try to fight? Torture. He’s most likely had countless corrective surgeries from the scar tissue alone, which only reopens the wound and leaves less and less skin to work with. You can see how caved in the scar is, indicating just how much of his body is missing. His destroyed respiratory system forces blood to fill the remaining lung he has left when he overexerts himself, which is all the time. He probably has to have blood tranfusions regularly to make up for the loss, as well as other injections to assist his body in running properly. There’s probably an oxygen tank by his bedside to help when he’s choking on his own blood in the middle of the night. His body wasting away until his very skin stretches like plastic wrap over nothing but bones. Muscles being eaten away in replacement of food.
But what sucks the most? The time he can be All Might is decreasing more every day. The one thing he’s wanted his whole life, to help people, is starting to become difficult to do. He has to hide his true form from the public, he doesn’t want them to fear for their lives if he can’t help anymore. Now he spends more and more time in his own mind because he can’t distract himself anymore. And what’s worse than the mental pain is the physical accompanying it.
Now BESIDES all this happening, we also have Nighteye’s betrayal. Sir, the man who was his sidekick for years, the guy he’s probably been able to grow the closest to, betrays All Might’s trust and looks into his future. And what does he see?
Tumblr media
In six to seven years, Toshinori will meet a villain, and meet a gruesome demise. The betrayal makes him and Nighteye go separate ways, losing a friend.
Now with his declining health and the death sentence hanging over his head, Toshinori has to think about what he hoped he wouldn’t for years yet. He needs a successor. Someone to give this power to before it’s too late.
Insert Izuku.
Tumblr media
A young, quirkless boy who just wants to help people. Sounds familiar. Izuku is an obvious choice despite everyone telling Toshinori he’s not the right fit. (Like Nighteye whom Toshinori tried to tell, but was only shot down.) So once he hands over One for All to Izuku, the problem, despite the boy destroying himself as he tries to use it and Toshinori being unsure how to help him, is that his power is decreasing even faster now. Which, of course, is to be expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to deal with. His time limit is drawn shorter and shorter until All for One starts to make a reappearance.
So not only did Toshinori not kill him, all the trauma he went through was for nothing, but now the world is in danger, again. And he doesn’t know if he can help them. Which means he has to involve his young ward in this mess that killed his mentor, almost killed him, and could potentially kill the boy as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So he tells Izuku of the origin of One for All and All for One. But he doesn’t tell the boy that by the time Izuku fights this guy, Toshinori won’t be around anymore.
Tumblr media
He doesn’t let on how much the power is draining out of his body, and doesn’t enlighten the boy on his own upcoming death. Which unfortunately means he has to lie and give Izuku a false sense of security.
And then, All for One shows up.
Tumblr media
And this time, All Might’s true form is exposed to the public. His weakness. Now the world knows that All Might isn’t invincible. Despite this, he’s still able to force his broken and exhausted body to beat All for One again, while using up the last of One for All, and leaving it up to Izuku.
Tumblr media
Now he’s that quirkless boy who wants to help people again, only this time, he can’t.
Tumblr media
Now he can’t be a hero, the one thing that’s kept him going all these years. And people on the street who don’t recognize him right away, criticize how he looks, which again, is out of his control. So he continues to hide himself in shame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gran Torino has told him he’s not being a proper mentor to Izuku, but the boy is already surpassing him with his schooling from other teachers. So, without heroing and mentoring, all Toshinori has left is being a teacher.
Tumblr media
And unfortunately, Eraserhead has told him he’s also mediocre at that as well.
Then Izuku meets Sir Nighteye, and questions Toshinori about their relationship, while also questioning his own successor-ship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which leads to a very emotional scene of Toshinori telling Izuku exactly what happened all those years ago, as well as his death sentence that, oh by the way, is coming either this year or the next.
Tumblr media
Toshinori is fairly emotionless while explaining this to the boy, I imagine he’s fairly disconnected with his own emotions by this point.
Tumblr media
But seeing how upset Izuku was is enough to make him try and console the other that he won’t simply roll over and die, that he’ll go down fighting.
Tumblr media
And THEN, he gets word that Sir Nighteye is in grave condition and most likely won’t make it through the night. Even after their falling out, Toshinori goes to his friend’s side, and the resemblance is scary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now he can see why Nighteye looked into his future, to see if Toshi had any chance on living. Being put in this position, he can understand. You can even hear Toshinori’s voice break (Japanese version) when he tells Sir that he needs to stay alive to allow Toshi to repent for his sins. But Nighteye can’t stay. And when facing the man who’s always been known for his smile, who can’t do it anymore, Sir says to him: “Smile. Live on, Toshinori.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But for what?
The most recent episodes have a relatively emotionless Toshinori.
Tumblr media
Like in today’s episode, the best he can give Izuku is a small smile, barely anything. He doesn’t even emote when he catches Hatsume’s stray baby.
Tumblr media
He clearly still has the reflexes of a hero, but he can’t physically be one anymore. His health is too fragile. *Manga spoilers ahead*
Then there’s this scene with Aizawa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He had long since accepted his own death, maybe even longed for it. But Izuku made him decide to try and live, even though he’s not sure how to anymore.
This poor man has been through Hell. And now he feels useless and helpless. Thank God he finally said something to Aizawa, but he needs more than just this, he needs to have a purpose again. I hope Aizawa and the others can help him find it again.

Tumblr media
okay i’m about to ramble here, because i love that we have someone (aizawa of all people!!) acknowledging in canon that toshinori is actually very intelligent
i’ve noticed that often, toshinori gets portrayed as a goofball, someone who isn’t that smart, and just wanted to discuss how, even though he is a fool sometimes, he’s one of the smartest characters in the bnha universe. just looking at his ultra analysis stat block:
Tumblr media
toshinori has a 6/6 rating for his intelligence stat. for comparison, other 6/6 intelligence characters are:
principal nezu (who literally has an intelligence boosting quirk)
momo yaoyorozu (who is so good at utilising her quirk because of her in-depth understanding of material science, chemistry and physics)
all for one (dude is old as fuck (lots of experience), extremely emotionally intelligent (which he uses to be manipulative), and tactically brilliant)
we don’t know david shield’s official stats, but as he is a nobel prize winner, it’d be a safe guess to say he is also 6/6
toshinori also outranks sir nighteye (5/6), aizawa shota (5/6) and recovery girl (5/6) for intelligence
next up, we have one of the few things we know about young toshinori: he went to college in the states. that alone doesn’t qualify intelligence, but what we can infer from two heroes does
Tumblr media
it’s not a stretch to say that dave was almost definitely a STEM major - he goes on to become a world renowned, nobel prize winning scientist. his inventions are used as support items for heroes globally. dave almost definitely majored in either physics or engineering
what’s notable, is that toshinori is taking at least Some of the same classes as dave, which we know from when dave comments about them both being late for their lecture again. dave is smart, already an accomplished inventor at 21, implying that they’re likely both enrolled at a high ranking university
toshinori is therefore capable of meeting academic requirements for a high ranking and competitive university, and is also shown to be mathematically and analytically gifted, based on his (probable) major
next up is toshinori’s tactical abilities. it’s almost a shame that all might could solve almost every problem with a punch or two, because the few times a fight gets tough, toshinori is shown to be very smart and tactical. look at the usj fight, for example:
Tumblr media
toshinori identified the nomu’s quirk (shock absorption), used an educated assumption to figure out its weakness (there must be a limit - apply too much force over a short period of time and it cannot cope), and quickly switched tactics to apply his deduction, which turned out to be true
now let’s look at the kamino ward fight:
Tumblr media
brute force alone was never going to win the fight. afo, as mentioned before, is incredibly emotionally intelligent, and uses that against toshinori. and toshinori, also incredibly emotionally intelligent, is able to compartmentalise these revelations, whilst still leading all for one to believe he was compromised by this
toshinori feints a "final attack", plays into all for one’s ego, and all for one’s expectation that toshinori will fight honestly (as in, he wouldn’t use deceptive tactics), then brings home the final blow when all for one believes the victory is his
Tumblr media
toshinori yagi, though sometimes a bit of a goof, is an incredibly intelligent person. he’s well educated and highly analytical, he’s very emotionally intuitive, and he’s tactically brilliant. don’t underestimate how smart this man is

Death of Twice & Gran Torino (+Crust)
I wanna talk about those deaths in this arc, some parallels and the way their death was portrayed in the story.
1) Chapter Name and Narrative;
Tumblr media
The name of the chapter Twice died was “Happy Life”. This is obviously refers to Twice’s perspective. He is the one who talks in this chapter. It’s his narrative. And how he sees his life.
Tumblr media
The name of the chapter Gran Torino died was “Plus Ultra”. And it refers to Shigaraki’s plus ultra who isnt even a “hero”. Not only his words are important in this scene but also, he looks like the his childhood version, a kid who needs to be saved. It’s mostly about his narrative.
Tumblr media
Gran Torino’s perspective is also shown too but Shigaraki is the one who talked about hero society and he had flashbacks about how he was abandoned and Gran Torino’s flashback was about how he and Nana abandoned a child.
2) Their lives;
Tumblr media
Twice is a villain, criminal, he killed people. But also story made it clear that society pushed him to this way; Twice was a good person who fell from the cracks of society.
Tumblr media
He had a pretty tragic life. He lost his family when he was young. He did nothing wrong but was punished. He lived in streets, he was so lonely that he copied himself. Then, literally watch himself’s death over and over again. He was traumatized and had a serious mental illness.
Tumblr media
And then, he finally found people who became his family and he died by protecting that family. He was a young man (31 years old is still young). He could’ve experience a lot of good things in his life but couldnt. He didnt even had a chance to healing properly. So basically, his death was pretty tragic.
Tumblr media
Gran Torino was a hero who saved people but it also showed that he made pretty unheroic things with his own choice. His life wasnt shown fully but it looks like he has a job, home, people he knows. He was also pretty old. So i dont think his life is tragic at all.
3) People Around Them;
Tumblr media
Not just Twice’s death was tragic but its also tragic for people who close to him. Toga was a lonely girl who finally made a friend first time in her life. She finally learnt the connect with people healthy way but she lost that friend. Dabi is obviously burning in his feelings. We dont even know how Shigaraki will react Twice’s death but we know that he will be pretty much sad.
Tumblr media
Even Hawks, the person who killed Twice, is pitifull. If Hawks kill the person who closest to him, then what will happen to Hawks. It’s also tragic for Hawks too.
Tumblr media
Gran Torino’s death was pretty sad for both Deku and Allmight but i think they will eventually get over it. They ahve people around them, they have a healthy environment but leauge only has each others.
4) The Choices They made;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reason Twice died was trusting Hawks. Why did he trust him? Caus Hawks was pitifull. He wanted to reach out to Hawks, saved him from his loneliness. How sad it would be, if noone trusted you? Twice chose to trust Hawks and this war happenned, he was pushed the corner and it lead him to death.
Tumblr media
Gran Torino chose to abandon a child, he also chose to ignore things that happenned to Shigaraki. He dehumanized him, despite knowing that he is victim of AFO and wrong decisions they made. He also tried to kill him, he pushed Shigaraki to corner with heroes and it lead him to death.
5) Last Thing They did;
Tumblr media
Twice literally died while trying to protect his family. Hawks ltireally killed him by stabbing him from his back, symbole of betray. Last thing twice thought was how happy he was to meeting with league. The relationship with them is what they saved them, not heroes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gran Torino died while trying to kill someone. The last thing Gran Torino thought was ltireally realizing that the decision he (and Nana) made was wrong.
6) Shigaraki and Hawks;
Tumblr media
There are bucnh of parallels between those two characters. They both were innocent kids who wanted to be a hero. They both came from abusive household. They both child soldiers who is groomed to be hero/villain. Also they both always chose opposite choices and Shigaraki is rising while Hawks is falling. But in this arc, there is a also another paralell between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawks had a hard life, pretty lonely and he felt trapped inside the cage. Twice saw this and reach out to him. He wanted to save him cause he emphatize with his condition. For Hawks, Twice was a good person, a friend, first person who treated him as person. Hawks is a hero but he acts as unheroic. He ignored the person who cries right in front of him. He is the one who control of the sitution, he pushed Twice to corner and killed him in the end. The way Hawks killed him is literally sembolism of betrayal.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki had a tragic life, pretty damaged kid. Gran Torino is one of those people who is also one of the reasons that Shigaraki became who he is cause their decision eventually lead him to kidnapped by AFO, even though not everything is their fault. Also until the end, Gran Torino chose to dehumanize him, despite have a bunch of hints to see him as victim. He blamed him/the victim, until the end. Gran Torino was someone who wont even try to save Shigaraki. He didnt emphatize with his condition, he also blamed him for his victimhood. Gran torino was a hero but he acts as unheroic. He refused to see Shigaraki as victim and ignored everything about him, until the end. He was the one who control of the sitution with heroes. They pushed Shigaraki to corner and tried to kill him but Gran Torino failed to kill him and died in the end. The way Gran Torino was died is shown as results of wrong decision he made with Nana.
So parallels;
Tumblr media
Hawks killed the person who tried to save him.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki killed the person who wont even try to save him.
So basically in this arc;
Tumblr media
Crust’s death was heroic. Even when he killed noumus, he was the only one who felt sad cause they were victims of science.  Last thing he did was trying to save someone with a smile on his face. We didnt even know about hpim that much but still, it was a pretty heroic way to things to do.
Tumblr media
Twice death was tragic, also since he tried to protect his friends, it was also heroic. Message was; he was a good man in deep but society failed him and let him fall from the cracks of society but he found himself again with league.
Tumblr media
Gran Torino’s death wasnt really shown as heroic or tragic. Like; message was he and Nana made the wrong decision and that wrong decision lead to this.
Twice death was portrayed as pretty tragic, while Gran Torino’s death wasnt portrayed as tragic, the way Twice’s was. Of course, people can feel sorry for both of them or one of them or neither of them, doesnt matter. What i am talking about is the way story portrayed their death. And this doesnt mean someone deserves to die cause noone deserves to die, its just happens but in stories, scenes have meaning and i wanted to talk about that meaning in here. And paralells are pretty interesting. (I might edit things later but for now, thats it.)

Holy

Goku Black x Fem!Reader
Song Inspiration: Holy by Zolita
The mortals didn’t worship like they used to. No tributes, no sacrifice, only evil and destruction rained upon the worlds the kais had worked so hard to build.
Zamasu—Goku Black now, wasn’t it?—was chosen to cleanse the world of the mortals, of the filth and wretchedness they’d brought upon the divine world the kais had created for them.
He’d spent so long watching the worthless humans, forced to look down upon them as if they were something more than the dirt beneath his shoe. But one human…she was unlike any other he’d seen in this accursed new age.
