The state of a character's mind and their loss of hope very quickly show in their appearence. Despair comes first, illness follows. There are so many examples of it, too.

When Jopson says this line, he's combing Crozier's hair. Who's getting first signs of ilness soon after that? Fitzjames. Blood dripping from his hair. After Blanky told him the story about Fury Beach, spawning despair/fear in James.

Talking about Blanky, he never loses hope and despite losing a leg and suffering from gangrene, he looks as fresh as ever until the last second. (the facial/hair doesn't count, i think that's his natural state)

Who looks the best out of all of them for the longest? Hickey. Hickey, who's convinced he's going to bond with Tuunbaq and survive. Not a single sign of illness, no wounds, hair is mostly in order, too.

When Jopson realises Crozier thinks they're going to die and is trying to placate him with the lieutenant status, he rapidly declines in health. Stops shaving, has scurvy gums and cracked lips. He looks rough.

Hodgson gets separated during the Tuunbattack and the next shot we see of him, his hair looks horribly thin, his cheeks are frostbitten as he's sitting there, expecting to die alone, cold and hungry.

Soon after Gibson breaks up with Hickey, he stops looking right. A bit of him is lost in that break up and he gains the iconic malnourished dog look instead.

Le Vesconte looks fine enough up until Fitzjames starts showing signs of scurvy and after James dies, he looks straight up haunted.

You could say that it's the other way around in some cases, but I like to think of it this way.
