HIIT but not hurt – get your calorie burn going without injuring yourself
Dr Wong Yue Shuen, Orthopaedic Specialist at Gleneagles Hospital, suggests building an exercise base first before trying HIIT, especially for someone who is just starting an exercise programme, or who has come from a long layoff from exercise. Serious injury can occur due to lack of strength, technique, or flexibility, and some participants have even developed kidney injuries from HIIT. Ideally, a programme should be varied, with HIIT no more than three times a week. The other days should be rounded out with some lower intensity aerobic work and some strength, flexibility and stability exercises.
