Little drabble written for @dghdabigbang‘s fortnightly prompt challenge, for “trust” <3

~

“Trust me.”

It seems to be one of Dirk’s ever-growing list of catchphrases. 

“Trust me,” he chirps, thrusting a plateful of marshmallow-covered nachos into Todd’s reluctant hands. (Todd shouldn’t have trusted him.)

“Trust me,” when they’re barrelling down an alleyway sprinting for their lives from a deranged kitten hoarder, just slightly out of breath and with a tinge of out-of-place laughter.

Nine times out of ten, Todd ends up regretting this ginger exchange of trust—whether that’s with a stomachache, misplaced bruises, or gargantuan embarrassment in the form of shaky, blurred videos on Dirk’s phone that he’ll never, ever (ever ever!) delete.

He doesn’t know why he still goes along with it, honestly; why, when those two words inevitably fall from Dirk’s mouth, his first and foremost reaction is to drop everything and follow.

Which is why, when he’s awoken in the bleary, wee hours of the morning by a twitchy, caffeinated hand shaking him half off the bed, Dirk says, gleefully whispered, “Trust me,” and Todd groans, slaps a hand over his face to scrub the sleep away, and follows him out the door, all the while wondering why the hell he’s doing this.

The balcony air is crisp and chilly and fever-fresh. Dirk’s sitting on the railing, which would normally be, oh, incredible dangerous and life-threatening and bone-breaking in the breeze sweeping over their bodies, but it’s Dirk, so Todd just shrugs and walks over beside him, resting his forearms on the railing next to where Dirk is ambiently swinging his legs.

“Care to explain why we’re here?” Todd cautiously brings up, when Dirk seems content to simply sit there and say nothing.

“Mm,” Dirk says. “Look.” He points up.

Todd looks. It’s a sky. Dark indigo from the suburban lights.

Then, suddenly, a streak of something bright and sparkling skitters across the canvas. 

“It’s a meteor shower,” Dirk says happily.

“Oh,” Todd says, because it’s starting, now, right in the nick of time (and how Dirk knows these things, intrinsically and without influence, is just another one of the great mysteries of the universe that he’s chalked up to holistic bullshittery).

Another breeze. Todd shivers; moves a little closer to Dirk, who’s emanating warmth like he’s a space heater. More stars join the first, breaking through the darkness. “Oh, wow,” Todd says again, watching them shimmer.

Dirk glances over. The light reflected in his eyes makes them glow a pale sea-breeze blue. “Told you to trust me,” he says softly, smiling.

Todd smiles back. Maybe there is a reason, after all.

IT’S SO GOOOOOOOOD!!! I love every single drawing and doodle so, so much. The little details are phenomenal—the little whisk on Todd’s shirt? Absolutely amazing. Dirk’s jackets!! Love them! Love love love! So much love! This made my day 1000x better.
