Death Traditions
For my final project I decided to take advantage of the creating your own work option. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to use a pen and paper, and thought going back to some old school techniques would be a perfect homage to the subject and story I picked. The story Sabrina and Corrina was my inspiration for this piece, but more in particular is in the beginning when the grandmother is cooking for the funeral. The scene is set up with the woman in the kitchen cooking, while the men were in the living room. Having multiple family deaths, some as tragic as the story let on, that was a familiar scene in my life as well. Especially the part where she mentions her grandmother was cooking with three giant pots filled with pinto beans, menudo, and green chili. We at the Astorga house did the same thing. I can think of numerous times seeing my grandma, nina, and mama cooking late into the night as they prepped all the arrangements. I can remember my uncles and cousins in the other room quietly talking and reminiscing about the person who had passed. They usually had a bottle of some liquor as well. It’s interesting to see the importance of that tradition and care happening and how similar it can be. After my grandmother passed, that tradition kept on with my nina and mother and myself. I remember my grandmothers kitchen being very colorful and always found it ironic. All that color and all that sadness. I went with a traditional Mexican folk art look to also pay tribute to that part of my culture and my grandmothers decorations. In the middle I drew a table with the three foods that always brought some form of comfort during the sad time. I also decided to draw a woman skeleton on one side cooking, and male skeleton on the other side of the table with a bottle. Even though we were separated and had our duties we all came together over food. Thank you to everyone for the amazing semester, (as best as it could be anyways) it was exciting to see all the talent posted here. Best wishes and love to you all.

Reading and Response #5
I have to say how impressed I was with the short story collection by  Kali Fajardo-Anstine titled Sabrina and Corina. I admit I was a bit worried to have to read these stories as part of a final. I’m not a big reader and have a tendency of drifting off or getting distracted. It didn’t really take long for the stories to suck me into them. I really appreciated that most of the stories were in or around Denver. Growing up here and coming from an hispanic family it was easy to relate to some of the stories. Some of the stories really hit close to home, one in particular was the story Tomi. I had an uncle who did and had similar issues with alcohol and jail. He stole from the family on several occasions, and my mother did what she could to be there for him. The boy Tomi reminded me of my brother, who tried to have a relationship with my uncle. My mother being a divorcee at the time and my brother and I had a hard time dealing with the fact our father bailed with his new girlfriend. So there was a lot to that story I could relate to and feel empathetic towards the characters involved. That was just one story that hit the heart strings, but overall the entire book is absolutely maganificant and I can see why it won the 2020 National Book Award.

One Minute Performance
I choose to do a series of photos for this assignment about depression. I think during this time right now a lot of people can relate, and to be totally honest it was kicking my butt this past week. It made it difficult to focus and hard to concentrate on my responsibilities. I admit I was a bit apprehensive to make this happen. I already don’t like being in front of camera and to show myself in setting of vulnerability was nerve wracking. However this exercise actually helped, and served as a bit of an outlet for me. Usually I like to paint or something of that sorts to deal with these things but the motivation has been hard to reach. I choose to use the blue lights to set the mood of sadness. I was in front of my door because those moods make it feel as if I’m trapped in a room. Also the white door served as a nice background. I set up a video camera and started thinking about all the things that have been getting to me. I took screenshots of the more intense moments I was thinking about. Which is what I am presenting to you today.

This is really cool. I like the different shots you included and the thought it was pretty clever introducing the word with the scrape paper like that.

First and foremost, that looks delicious. Secondly, I really dig the editing and the funny/sarcastic vibe some of them had. Great job

Very well done with this video. I really liked the clips. I think using nature was perfect to achieve the philosophical content.
Art Project 3: Love Your Existence
Artist Statement
For this project I wanted to create a relaxing and philosophical short work of video art. I chose to focus on nature, mainly aerial footage, because I thought it lended itself well to the subject content. The audio is from an artist named @MoStFeAr, which also featured the lecture by Alan Watts. It was a much longer clip that I trimmed down to include the most poignant section of the track. I wanted to focus on ephemeral forces of nature that complimented the subject of human existence. Birth and death are the main components of both the audio and visuals, which I thought were represented well in each of the selected clips. I hope Watt’s ideas captivated you and the video complimented his brilliant and profound words. Works cited is located in the description.

In the Hall of a Compulsive Scroller
So often I find myself picking up my phone to use google search, or to call someone I love,  or to text someone a “hey, thinking of you” message, and immediately after I do whatever task I needed to do with the use of my phone, I find myself mindlessly clicking through nearly all of my app icons to check for changes; to see if someone more distant tried to make contact with me, or to see something new, or to “get inspired,” or see how many likes I got on my last post that had nothing to do with my art. So many reasons to pick up my phone with functional intensions, yet I pick up my phone the most and accomplish the least by opening Facebook and Instagram. I’m even addicted to checking my new Tumblr account, it’s become a clicking ritual.  I scroll and I filled my brain with cute puppies, funny quotes, engagement announcements, political propaganda, disaster news, bias and antagonistic opinions, the list goes on… and it’s not all that bad. Social media will forever be a constant battle of morals, it will continue to cause mental illness, and it is becoming a stigma for the current generation and future generations to come, unless we accept change. Unplug. Delete. Log Out. Deactivate. Whatever it is you have to do, try. Make social media a useful tool again, not a feeding frenzy to keep “users” compulsively scrolling so they see more adds, make more clicks. Disengage. I repeat DISENGAGE.

Art Project 3: One Minute Supercut
Title:
A Little Saying To Get A Laugh.
Artist Statement:
Do you often hear people respond with this when someone says something like “Man, that test was hard” or do you find yourself saying this phrase? I’m a victim of it because it’s a phrase that never gets old and I am known to joke around sometimes whenever I’m hanging out with my friends.
It was definitely a challenge and disappointing having to shorten the clips to where I had to cut out the main body of the joke. But, I think that the shortened clips came out good because it can make someone wonder what was said to make Michael Scott or the other office workers to say “that’s what she said.”
I hope you enjoy my video!

Fun Fact: “That’s what she said” is said 51 times between Season 2-Season 9 of The Office.

I like that you went with the actual sounds from the clips. It makes the super cut more relatable to a day in someone’s life feeling.
youtube
Over the summer I tried my hand at vlogging. I couldn’t really find my footing so I never did anything with the footage. I decided to make a “A day in the life” supercut. Instead of having dialogue like a vlog, this video utilizes the natural light and nat sound of my daily routine. I also wanted to utilize the super cut format to show the passage of time.

Supercut project: Woman
I created this project with ideas, objects, expectations, associations, & symbols that I relate to my experience of womanhood/femininity and a glimpse of others’ ideas.  It would be incredible to have a larger scope of diversity in personal experiences and connections, but I was limited on time.  These are concepts of my own and some ideas I got from one of my friends.  I came up with this idea because I was thinking about how so many women have different backgrounds that shape the idea of what being a woman means to them.  We share a lot of experiences in womanhood, but there are a lot of other aspects like culture, religion, race, socio economic status, sexuality, gender identity, etc that have an impact on our view of what being a woman represents.
Overall, this was my first time making my own video on premiere pro aside from the technical exercise video.  I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and it was fun to learn the software better.

Music Video - A Day Downtown
This was a really fun project, and I may have gotten a bit overboard with what was just an exercise but whatever! It was a great excuse to go walking around the city and get out into the world a bit. I recorded various areas of my neighborhood and just enjoying the day. While I was on my walk I discovered this remix of Suzanne Vega’s Toms Diner song. It’s definitely a guilty pleasure 90′s song for me. The original music video is a bit random to the actual song, so I thought it would be perfect for the somewhat randomness of my clips. I honestly just spent most of the time really playing with the different effects and possibilities of editing in Adobe Premiere. I tried to make some transitions and effects match the beats in the song. A lot harder than originally thought to be. I hope you guys enjoy!

‘Places We Used To Go’ a 10 part gif series that pays tribute to the concerts and festivals we used to attend. What seemed like just production then has turned into a distant memory. I miss the rainbow lights and connecting with other people. From this series I hope you get a glimpse into the world I used to be a part of. Until we can gather again, cheers to the places we used to go.

Really an interesting series here. I have to agree with the above comment that there was something eerie. It had a very alien life vibe going on or some other new world. Great job

Growth. Fruiting. Reproduction. Deliquescence. Death.
Mycelium, the main body of the fungi, remains hidden underground. The fruiting body appears only after certain environmental conditions are met. Spores release. Nutrients are reabsorbed. The fruit dies or is eaten, giving back to the ecosystem.
Creativity, inspiration, ideas; stay hidden within the artist. The work appears, and is shared with the community. The artist learns, from the process, and from criticism. The piece enters history, providing inspiration to peers, to students, and dilettantes.
In these ways, the life cycle of a mushroom can be seen as a visual metaphor for the creative process.
