Poliça- The Maker
I shot this footage with Max Sweeney about a week before I first arrived in Berlin.  Poliça at the 2012 SXSW Origami/ Echoplex showcase sponsored by Etnies.  This was my first introduction to Poliça and what an introduction it was.  I remember the last time I was shooting at SXSW in 2010 my friend was teasing me for “making love” to the lead singer of Ume with my camera.  I am ashamed to say that I was struggling with this very same issue when shooting Poliça.  Lead Singer Channy Leaneagh's deep astral tones and soulful movements quickly charmed us all.  Backed by an irrepressible rhythm section this is a must see live act.  Their album, “Give you the ghost” has been looped in my que ever since I discovered this band.  But after seeing them again at the Mercury in Berlin I realized how special it is to see this group live.  You just can’t recreate the explosive sound of two amazing drummers in a studio setting.  If you get the chance definitely check out Poliça and for now enjoy “The Maker” via the Beauty Bar in Austin Texas.

There are two major factors that lend me a deep personal joy towards this video or rather the process of capturing it.  One: the myriad films on child exploration during my earliest years, specifically Goonies, The Explorers, and Stand By Me.  Two: Growing up in a small town with two brothers separated in age by only a handful of years.  I fondly remember us taking a small zodiac boat along the farmland edged delta in search of an abandoned structure we could explore and in most cases destroy.  I found this abandoned schoolhouse during my failed attempt to break into the old Spreewald Amusement park, it too having been abandoned about 10 years ago.  So no overgrown Ferris wheel or gloomy fiberglass dinosaurs on this series.  Stay tuned in the near future for this, and in the meantime, enjoy the rich textures of an old schoolhouse in Treptower park.

Sprockets und fisch?       One of our stops during the overwhelming Gallery Weekend Berlin.  The Freies Museum Berlin turned out to be my personal favorite of the several independent exhibits during this weekend.  This space was both inviting and enticing.  I felt like I could breathe and take my time with each piece, a bit of calm in madness that is gallery weekend berlin.   Here is a piece that caught the attention of my lens, and so I thought I'd share it with you.  Enjoy!

Boat-Basement-Bike     The order of the day as seen through yours truly.  Locations: Frankfurter Alle, The Zone, The Strasse outside the zone shortly thereafter.  This was the order of the day, and luckily for me it lead to a 200 square foot basement filled arm to arm with sweaty drunk Berliners listening to the melancholic music of Molly Nillson.  The Zone is an apartment turned bar in southeast Berlin where the disheveled barkeeps are at a constant reorganization.  The boat?  Well simply enough a fish out of water catches my attention every time.  The bike?  In a city where most neighborhoods end in berg(mountain) it is flat as a pancake.  As a result, the streets are most often navigated by these heavy yet trustworthy bikes.  This little guy lights my path home night after night.

Through the catacomb-esque tunnels of the Fichte Bunker, up and under the apartments and basement of the Grimmuseum, I should learn to expect the unexpected. To this expat there is a sort of guileless approach to Berlins landscape.  Airport turned park, a bunker for an exhibition, and two apartments linked by a basement tunnel as a Museum.  My theme for this night was art as experienced through adventure.  For all intents and purposes this is not an art blog.  But I find it impossible to document my experiences in this city without art.  I have been struggling with the idea of altering somebody’s work through my documentation.  Should the work be shown in its entirety, title, etc?  I personally believe that any sort of documentation alters the work through the subjectivity of the viewer (in this case the videographer).  So I present you this, and sleep well.  Please feel free to add your comments and/or criticisms.  Or you can just shut the f*#% up and enjoy the pretty pictures.  Tschüs!

When traveling to Austin, Tx I often heard the phrase; "If you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes". This rings true for the Month of April in Berlin, Germany. You may start the day on a bike ride showered in sunshine and end it showered in hail. This day turned to snow for about 20 minutes. This was the view from the rear window of our apartment. This city is so full of texture. I cannot get enough.
