Bipolar has a close connection with addiction which is something I failed to point out within my project but when going through a manic episode addictive personality trates can really show there true colours

This article is similar to my book in the way that it looks through a range of peoples lives to see what it is actually like to go through bipolar disorder.

I always find it interesting when people in the lime light talk about there personal issues and I think when it comes to mental illness it is nessercery and helpful to others going through the same thing

Edited photos
I like how they look but I’m worried they are far too moody and showing a really negative light on bipolar and they flectect the depression far more than the mania involved in bipolar. I’m willing to give them a try and see if they work in my layouts but currently I’m unsure on what they will say within the book and what I will gain from putting them in.

My attempt at conceptual photography - unedited
The idea behind these photos is everything looks rough and dark yet the flowers are trying to frantically grow through and I like the idea of everything dark and falling apart representing depression and the flowers and plants representing mania but I’m not sure if it will work with my current layout ideas so i plan to edit them in black and white and try them out on a few spreads and see how it works.

Depression Photography
For the depression photography, I want something kind of cold, damp, still, gloomy, dark... what I want to show is in a dark place and being stuck there within the photography and how it can feel hard to escape or feel even lost or trapped. I also considered showing lows as litteraly showing the ground and being rock bottom showing dakr gorund, muddy puddles and shadows of who the person usually is. I’m not usually one for conceptual photography but so I think these ideas could really work i just need to put them into action ready for printing tomorrow.

“We are photographers living with or affected by mental illness; supporting each other one photograph at a time. Join our community, submit today!”
I’ve found it really interesting coming across this website as they all sugfer with similar mental isillnesses and use photography to express that.

Mania Photography
The way I see my book is a story of two emotions- mania and depression so if I was to add photography into my book to tell a story those are the two contrasting themes I would like to reflect within my photography. For mania I’m considering the idea of tall buildings, blue skys showing the highs and feeling tall and proud and confident but also I would like to reflect racing thoughts and the idea of rush and panic and everything being fast paced and blurred so I think that could be an interesting starting point for my photographs. I would like to portray mania in a possitve light thpough because although it is a mental illness and it is out of control for many people for those suffering with bipolar it can often be the best bit for them and the moment they feel happy and normal and theat is something i would like to show in my project.

I’ve taken inspiration from my friend ellies photography as she often uses tectures and scenes to create moody photography and I think a similar style to shthis could work well within my book.

Tutorial 03/05/18
So my tutorial didn’t go exactly as I had hoped but I’ve been given a lot of recommendations on how to improve. Firstly they want me to consider adding photography to make sure more emotion is being shown in the book but without knowing the people who are featured in the interviews I’m a bit hesitant to do photography as portraiture is what I know best and in this circumstance, I can’t do it. So currently I’m exploring the idea of textural photography and the metaphors I could make using photography that could fit into the book.
They also recommended looking further into gradient and texture to help bring the book more to life. I like the texture idea but personally gradient has never been something i’ve liked so i’d like to stay clear if possible.
Then lastly being more experimental with my type as currently it is a little repective and dull and it needs more considering type is the only imagery so far.

The last mock piece that I took into my tutorial this morning to show how I wanted my final book to look and the style i’d like it to be in. I wanted the texture of the papers and the colours and pull quoes to work as the imagery and as mocks go I’m pretty happy with it.

Project title
Currently, my working title is understanding bipolar but I really want to make it more interesting but stuck for ideas. I’ve been using the thesaurus to try and thinking of other words for understanding but not having much luck so currently, I’m trying to see if other words for bipolar could work.
