After Rumi said she didn't want to save the Honmoon if what it meant was hatred and shame for how she was I was really hoping the movie would go in a different direction and end with Gwi-Ma being defeated and the barrier between the demon/human world being shattered and allowing for free interaction between the two instead of just. Re-establishing the Honmoon but Huntrix style.

Another question, I'm curious how heavily the 2D VFX was integrated and how much was done in 3D. The biggest spot I noticed was the final explosion in the what it sounds like climax as gwima gets exploded, but were the eye sparkles that happened in Rumi's eyes at big moments done in 2D too? (Big fan of the sparkles btw lol, very anime in the best way possible)

I'm studying 2D anim and curious how this new era of hybrid 2D/3D animation works from a production standpoint

there was quite a lot of mixed 2D/3D effects! that final climax shot of gwima getting stomped was animated by Xin Ju, who drew quite a lot of 2D effects that ended up making it into the final film! in some cases, lighting just used his original drawings, but for that final climax shot, he did rough drawings and then the fx department did their own pass with a mix of 2D and 3D.

gwima himself was also a mix of 2D and 3D effects. we animated him with rough 3D geometry, then a 2D artist went over our animation with a 2D pass and then the 3D folks did some more effects on top of that.

the eye sparkles were done using a tool created for spiderverse, that let the animators create publishable custom shapes that can be used by lighting.

i love this because it's just another way to see the hand of the artist in these shots because those shapes don't exist in the rig and were added by the animators.

lots of folks also used 2D to block their shots. probably something like 80% of the fight scenes in the movie were roughed out by Ryusuke Furuya, who is an absolute BEAST when it comes to action and fighting! he did a lot of 2D/3D hybrid blocking using blender

i know this is a tiiiiny nitpick that doesn't really matter, but i really wish the girls had clearly defined canon image colors for fan goods.

like i've been wanting to make a huntr/x kandi bracelet soooo bad, but i only really have a vague idea of what colors to use. compare this to something like an aqours farewell bracelet (something i've also been wanting to make), where it'd be a pain in the ass to get the right colors for all nine girls but would still be comparatively easier to design because you have a specific color plan to follow.

i low-key hope the creators release canon colors (even if it's just them saying what colors they used for the lightsticks) because i just know it'd make it that much easier for all the fans who wanna make merch.

I have a question. I’m not into k-pop or anything to do with that space, it’s not really my thing. But my sister is adopted from China and really into k-pop.

I was talking to her about K-Pop Demon Hunters thinking she would be into it, but she told me that the movie was:

A.) An offensive and overly emotive stereotype of Asian people that was just another way to mock their culture

And B.) A jab/way to ostracize and make fun of k-pop fans even though it’s a legitimate form of art and expression in Korea and now international with how it’s exploded

She also kinda made the note that the movie wasn’t for Asian people at all, but made for westerners and white people’s enjoyment rather than the tastes of people in that culture.

And I sat with that for a long time thinking about it, cause obviously I’m not in this space. So I’m curious what you guys think of this take. I haven’t seen the movie yet so I have no real say in what is and isn’t correct about it, I just want to know what ya’ll think…
