Zoey. she/her. In my thirties. i got kids. Does that make me a MILF? A shadow condenses like moss upon the ground. Somewhere, a light that you cannot see flickers and sputters and chokes and dies.

We’re living through an era in which the art/writing/music enthusiast and the casual observer live in practically different worlds. The internet enables people to develop a greater depth and specificity of knowledge than ever, but, crucially, it also creates a fundamentally solo experience. For example, my library of afoxé music and acid jazz isn't coming out of my involvement in any particular social scene, it's all looking stuff up because I was curious. Meanwhile the kind of music the average person is passively exposed to is far more homogeneous than it was even twenty years ago.
There is always going to be a minority of people drawn to developing an expert knowledge in any subject, but trying new things takes effort, and the average person needs to feel like that effort will matter in some way before they'll bother with it. If what we want is more interesting art in the world, we need to find ways to make it feel like exploring that art matters. Most people will be far more invested exploring things happening in the community around them than, I don't know, doing deep dives into obscure novelists from the 1950s. This is also true for artists! If you want more people to feel like it’s worth the immense effort of creating something, it needs to feel like it's going somewhere.
Our sense of what matters is overwhelmingly socially mediated, and we're living through a moment where our social ties are extremely weak, and growing weaker. The only way to fight against this is for people to step up and do the messy work of nurturing art scenes, online or off, working with what’s available to us, wherever we already are.
It needs to be artists and audiences together in this, and it's okay to start small. Forget waiting for ideal circumstances, if we want art, we need to find ways to connect with the people already around us.

gradient text maker
i made a tool for creating gradient text! it's similar to this great site, but with a few additional features:
extract a color palette from an image
paste a string of hex codes to load the colors
AO3 export mode (it's a bit of a pain in the ass but it works)
on neocities →
