I can assure you Stan isn't smiling, he's performing stability and faking peace. If you look past the sickeningly bright pink colours, when you see the objects as deliberately staged and the room being dressed, the mirror is the truth. His pose is constructed like a theatre set for an audience who is incapable of seeing the truth. There's a skull on the phone because Stan is chasing ghosts, people who will never choose him, who will never stay. He's surrounded by femininity he didn't choose on his own terms, things he learned that make him palatable and "pretty" instead of "Loud and a problem." None of it is real, that's the truth of unveiling the curtain. Stan did his job for you, the staging worked, he put on the scene so no one would see the facade.

This is the spiral, Stan without Jimmy is a ghost drifting through life wearing nice clothes, but Stan with Jimmy is a man made real. That's the tragedy, he's only ever seen by someone society doesn't even believe exists. Jimmy is a myth, a monster, outlaw, afterthought. But he's the only one who ever looked at Stan without expecting him to cut away pieces of himself. He never needed an explanation because he saw the mask, he wears it too.
