Not gonna lie tho, V looks remarkably like my ex-husband that time he forgot to cut his hair for like 6 months. Except with tattoos, emo sandals and summoned demons instead of Dickies, Chuck Taylors, and Little Debbie Snack Cakes.

So I’ve been watching a friend play DMC5, mostly out of morbid curiosity, and I figured out what was really bugging me (besides Nero’s butt-chin and attempts to be The Grittier Dante)...

TL;DR: I don’t hate it, but I also don’t love it. It’s... ok? But it has Problems.

Mind you, we haven’t finished the game yet. But none of the Strong Women™ of the franchise seem to get to DO ANYTHING in this game. Their badassery is implied at best - mostly you just get to rescue them (naked, of course). You don’t even get to see them fight - Dante just waltzes on in to the first Big Bad fight, right in time to see them both go flying and make a remark on their (undemonstrated) badassery.

That’s it.

Poor Kyrie fares even worse - so far she’s been nothing but a disembodied voice and some vague references. She doesn’t even seem to merit a model... maybe because she lacks the T&A potential that Trish and Lady have. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Trish and Lady to death and I was stoked to see them. But geez, guys.)

I do have a soft spot for Nico, the White Trash Wonder, and her unhinged driving. And the hat weapon is, frankly, the most hilarious thing I’ve seen in video games for some time. But the rest of the game hasn’t really measured up to DMC 1, 3, or even 4 so far, and it definitely has not been able to grab my interest the way the reboot did.

Your mileage may vary. It’s been mildly entertaining, and there’s a couple of times we were cry-laughing because of our own shitty fisting jokes, MY FALLING SON (Nightmare) and the way you can make everyone slide around on one foot (MAKIN MY WAY DOWNTOWN, SLIDIN FAST), but overall it’s just... not up there.

And then.... microtransactions. You can buy orbs. Back in my ancient days, you replayed levels to farm your fuckin orbs. And honestly, you can very easily get tens of thousands of orbs in a single level, how lazy do you have to be to buy them??? Color me disappoint.

How do you feel about the new Devil May Cry 5 coming out next year...?

I’ll be honest, I’m kind of glad that Capcom isn’t revisiting the DmC universe, because I always had the awful feeling that they were intending to have Dante kill off Vergil. While it sucks to leave the reboot hanging, it does leave lots of room for fan theories and works! (In other words, at least Capcom can’t screw it up for us...)

I’m also a fan of classic!DMC, just not in the obsessive way that DmC grabbed me (and still does, even if I haven’t really been active here). I’ll probably check out DMC5 at some point, though I’m not awaiting it as anxiously as the die-hard classic!DMC fans are. But I’m happy for them - this is what they’ve been waiting on for YEARS, while Capcom hemmed and hawed and milked re-releases and special editions.

...I will say that it hasn’t escaped my notice that the game models in DMC5 seem to have drifted away from the stylized versions that once characterized the classic series, and more towards the realistic style that was so decried in DmC. This may just be because modern PBR-based game engines kind of demand it, or you’ll get an Uncanny Valley effect. Still funny, though.
