My final review on the httyd live action as i went to go see it in 3D at the theaters on Today!
!! SPOILERS WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO HASNT SEEN THE LIVE ACTION YET !!
(I was able to see literally right after work with my younger sister thankfully. Also i still find it cool that not only did it release on Friday the 13th but also on the anniversary of httyd 2 )
Anyways onto the review and yes it will be really, really long so beware (⋋▂⋌)
• Okay for starters imma start with visual affects cause why not. The overall visual affects, lighting, and just the entire scene areas were magnificent like they were really good. My only main issue I had with it were the Viking houses. Especially hiccup’s house.
Basically they made hiccup’s house from yk massive and very Viking like to a blueish smaller looking house. Now idk why they made his house have blue when the rest are yk brown as it was never said at least not that I was able to find but idk the blue house kinda erked me a bit but I didn’t have to see it much so thats something
Anyways the way the rest of the buildings looked amazing I loved it it’s just another issue I had was the area were Vikings were running around and it was more open seemed kinda smaller in a sense idk but to me it looked smaller.
Well I give the visual affects a 8.5/10
• Anyways next onto the dragons. I love them, toothless was okay I mean he definitely looked a bit off putting next to the other dragons but even then I think they did a decent job on cgi toothless. I also very much loved his other dragons were seen and mentioned like the screaming death and skrill, the skrill I didn’t see a whole bunch obviously but I saw some parts of it still made me happy though. I also loved the fact that hookfang’s fire was kinda like a mix of lava and fire like in the movie the fire was dripping everywhere and looked a bit like lava which I thought was pretty cool. Stormfly, love her she looked amazing and she was just wow, barf and belch looks absolutely amazing too and I loved them. Meatlug I was kinda still iffy about her design but it’s kinda growing on me a little as she still gave off her cute personality as she did in the orginal so that’s one thing. Anyways I give the dragons a 8/10, -2 just cause of toothless
Now my least favorite part, all the characters and how they were played out, yeash this is gonna be a long one.
Okay let’s starts basic with the town’s vikings and background Vikings, so basically in the live action they have the background Viking a bit more of a story to them basically Berk became a home for Vikings from different regions to live which I mean kinda makes sense when we have had villains from the Mediterranean areas and Northern Africa, like Drago Bludvist. And basically there was a mix of yk Scandinavian Vikings which were the majority of them plus other who were from the east, south and even Africa regions, but most of those people were ones who needed a home and Berk welcomed them, which in my opinion sounded nice, it gave background characters a bit more of a story to them which i liked. Plus another character that they more a voice too was Phlegma the Fierce, although they did change her up a bit with giving her a more rough attitude and a missing leg which is why I didn’t know who she was until I looked it up. Cause when I mean she looked different I mean she looked different.
• Anyway onto the next person which is snotlout just because. Anyways i actually liked his character it definitely gave a snotlout vibe and to me he acted and sounded very much like rtte snoutlout with a mix of httyd1 snotlout. I also liked how spitelout was given more screen time and was shown how spitelout and snotlouts relationship was which reminded me of rtte which i indeed liked. As a result I liked how snotlouts character was executed so win win so far
• Next fishlegs, I mean I think it went well for fishleg’s character he acted, sounded, and just well was like fishlegs I liked it, his look reminded me of book fishlegs a bit with the curly black hair so that’s was nice idk I don’t have a lot to say on fishleg’s character just that it was well done, Next!
• The twins oof, well it went kinda well I mean for tuffnut that is but for ruffnut, oh.. er it was definitely something let me explain. I don’t mind their looks what’s so ever, and tuffnut’s character was done right, it’s just mainly ruffnut I’m having a big issue with, basically yk how in the original ruffnut was yk odd and crazy but that’s what made her, her but she wasn’t trying to be with Astrid all the kind even making fun of her a bit when she messed up in the arena. While in the live action..how do I say this, she’s not much like that basically. Ruffnut gave off very much “girls rule boys drool” kind of vibe, saying how Astrid was her girl, defending her when they laughed At Astrid’s fail by saying “hey! Don’t mess with my girl, she’s trying” Jesus that was hard to watch and could have definitely been way better. Idk, I like the actor I just don’t think ruffnut’s character was executed very well, like I can kinda see the vision but not really. Anyways also with the twins remember how dean, the director said that he would basically make the twins be opposite of how the og was with how they are alike but think they aren’t, yeah that was true. In the live action the twins yk look completely different yet said that they’re mother gets them confused, and how they look practically identical, while yk in the og it’s the opposite of that. I didn’t mind it much it was definitely new but it gave the twins attitude vibe of how they act. What I didn’t like though much is how in the live action they had made it so that apparently the twins failed the dragon training four times, which either means the twins are older than the rest of that they do dragon training more often than said, either way I wasn’t sure how to feel about it but it kinda makes sense idk I’m not sure so I’m not gonna say much on it overall tuffnut’s character was done nicely but ruffnut’s needs some work 100%
• Now one that everyone’s always talking about is Astrid, now before I say anything I liked her look and no I don’t not care that her hair is different do I wish it was blonde yes but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter now on to Astrid’s character.
So in the live action I was pretty iffy on Astrid’s character throughout it all, like for one she doesn’t want to be better she just wants to be chief which doesn’t make sense as a part of Astrid’s whole character is that she wants to prove and be the best because of what happens to her people and she feels the need to be the best to protect her family, but in the live action she just wants to be the best and chief to make herself feel good which I didn’t like much. She was also very hateful and harsh towards hiccup as she believed he was privileged for being the chief’s son as if yk he doesn’t get shamed and bullied by his own tribe and gets left out of things but yeah he’s very much privileged totally.. yeah plus her and hiccups relationship plus Astrid wanting to be chief was a bit rushed and kinda felt like it was forgotten that Astrid literally said she will be chief and wants to have that privilege, it’s just kinda faded but I mean I was kinda glad about that cause that idea that live action Astrid had was just.. it was something, overall Astrid’s character execution was okay ish it definitely could have been way better in the sense but yeah one positive thing I didn’t like about Astrid was the switching between different outfits and hair for her like from twin braid to one to hair down, red outfit, green blue, it just was nice.
• Now Stoick and Gobber, gobber I was okay with he was gobber and he sounded like him too a little, but idk I don’t have much to say on his character. Stoick though, perfect 10/10 amazing it was just perfect, casting the og voice actor that indeed looked like stoick was perfect he sounded exactly like stoick, acting was amazing it was just so good, plus he brought so much more emotion to stoick’s character especially in the red death scenes it was just so good I loved how stoicks character was done and executed amazing man
• Now, finally, teh main character, HICCUP
• In the beginning of the movie overall the acting was a bit iffy but as the movie progressed masons acting for hiccup was good, I kinda wished he sounded more genuinely akward and crazy like the og cause lowkey he was giving face card but didn’t sound like something who was considered the town’s runt or looser. But hey at least Mason Thames has a reason to have that lethal face card for the second film so that’s one thing. Another thing I did like though is that emotions was definitely high and it was executed well from Mason like in the scene where Stoick and hiccup fight definitely a lot of emotions. I did also like that hiccup’s hair slowly went form Justin Bieber styled hair to slowly a bit more spikey and more alive as the movie progressed that’s just something small I liked. Overall I do think hiccup’s character could have been done better in the awkward sense plus how he says things like make my boy more dramatic and sassy please and thank you.
-
• Oof that took a bit out of me, well I think after all that I think it time for me to actually full on review the movie as a whole so let’s review.
The movie starts and we get to the opening scene which starts out with hiccup saying the same lines as he did in the orginal which was nice to hear, then yk hiccup runs, and stoick saves him from the fire, then yk after that hiccup runs off, One small thing im glad they added was the little fire getting on stoicks cloak and him flicking it off. basically most if not all of the opening scene was the same to the original which i found pleasing enough
We get to hiccup then running into the forge, a scene they did cut that I didnt like is this scene specifically

In the live action scene it skips right through this and goes into explaining who gobber is which was a bit annoying to be as I was kinda expecting this scene. Then after hiccup is showing off his invention gobber yk telling him he needs to stop being himself, basically the rest is the same as to the orginal. One small change was the group, specially astrid noticing hiccup and saying, "what are you looking at" just something small.
Then we get to the scene of hiccup yk running off shooting toothless down, getting chased by the mostrous nightmare , getting yelled at my stoick, they did add the scene of hiccup making fun of the other vikings weight, thank god.
Then at the scene where yk gobber is walking hiccup off and the other teens are making fun of him gobber doesnt push snotlout away unfortunally, and astrid also slighty participates in it.
Then we get to hiccup and gobber walking up to hiccup's house and yk he's ranting but yk what scene they took out.
youtube
This glorious scene omg bro I was so disappointed they didnt add this scene man, its so iconic and they didnt add it oml bro just, ARGHH

⬆️ How i felt about that btw
anyways next yk gobber says the same lines as he did in the og then makes sures hiccup walks inside. also im still disappointed in the house bro, cause wdym the cheif's house is smaller and blue, BLUE, having me loose my sanity with that house, cause the inside, amazing, 10/10, the outside, #yikes
I am never letting that go just so everyone knows
anyways, then hiccup instead of walking into the house and out the back he waits until gobber leaves and runs out of the front door
Then we get to the scene of the vikings in the Meade hall, and let me tell you while that scene is more longer than the original I kinda liked how the talk was different and acknowledging the other vikings and villagers lives, he does slighting talk about how yk they're vikings and its a occupational hazard and stuff but he never mentions hiccup and them having to look out for hiccup to convince them to come along which I mean I kinda expected change but I still would have liked for stoick to mention hiccup in some sort of way. But that scene change defiantly gave more emotion and depth to the background characters. Which tbh I lowkey liked.
Then after that we get to the scene of gobber and stoick talking and its bacially the same as the orginally so not much to talk there
Now we're at the scene of hiccup trying to find toothless and its basically all the same then hiccup finds toothless and heres a part that got people really riled up and let me tell you guys its not the same as it was shown in the tralier.
youtube
So we all know that in this scene here toothless's eyes are shown open in that way well guess what guys its the excat way in the live action, toothless doesnt look pathectic and just opens his eyes NOPE he does it the same excat way as he did in the orginal making him look menacing. THANK THE HEVANS OML
Don’t believe me watch this

I was so relived when the live action did that I was so happy dude
Anyways then we get to hiccup yk getting yelled at toothless then toothless running off unfortunally though they removed hiccup fainting after toothless runs off 😔 I wished they did
Anyways next scene, then we get to hiccup running into the house him and stoick having talking awkwardly and pretty much that entire scene was the same to the original, so lets move on tp the training scene cause that was changed slighting, spetically in what astrid says. For the most part its all the same but with more ruffnut defending astrid, the twins apparently failing the traning 4 times, and yk them being opposite to what they were in the og and astrid noting that hiccup was priveglle which im still not understanding her change of character and wanting to be chief for herself and not just wanting to be the best and help her tribe. Im still really iffy about that overall
Oh yeah and the another change was instead the scene where of basically gobber asking them what they need, instead of it going, Hiccup "A doctor?", Fishlegs "Plus five speed", Astrid "A shield!"
Its goes just astrid imminently saying a shield and hiccupa and fishlegs saying nothing which I noticed obviously but still slightly disappointing Then the rest of that training arena scene is pretty much the same just with snotlout not yk flirting with astrid as much. Ykw snotlout wasnt flirting with astrid very much on the live action unfortually but they do focus on him and his father's, spitelout, tensed relationship just like race to the edge did so thats othing that I did indeed liked out of the live action.
Then we get to hiccup going out to finding toothless and that entire scene was pretty much the same with him dropping the penicl hitting, finding scales, toothles trying to eat fish, basically all the same so thats good.
Then we get to the mead hall scene and oof, well i'll just say this its was good in the begging but by the end of it, it was definitely something
so yk its raing hiccup enters the hall, all wet from rain, which btw apparently in the live action it was two floors instead of it being just one massive room, and as gobber is talking he ask how astrid went wrong, and as she explains and yk how tuffnut makes fun of astrid and instead of ruffnut replying with a "Yeah we noticed" she defends astrid with a "hey! leave my girl alone, she was trying alright"

bro...I cant, just ruffnut saying that is not her dude, save my girl ruffnut please she deserves better than this
anyways then we have snotlout not flirting with astrid then we see hiccup walking and grabbing his food and just goes straight to the other table. Then yk gobber continues talking and goes to grab the book of dragons which in the live action they keep in a locked place for some reason but okay ig not gonna complain,
Then the scene contuines the same until we get to the part of hiccup trying to talk with astrid she still says "read it" and trys to walk off but instead of just ignoring hiccup when he still tries to talk to her, she marches up to him and goes on a rant about she thinks he's privgleed how she wants to be cheif and that maybe he shoudl step down for once and let her be the best and the cheif
HUH ???? bro im sorry but um what, so we are just changing astrid to being a bit selfish in just wanting to be chief for herself and disliking hiccup for apparently being privileged and not because he's pathetic and week alright then, um dean imma need a formal apologies for this please this was unacceptable.
Sigh anyway then we get to hiccup reading the book of dragons him putting his sketch into the book on the night fury page and pretty much all the same.
Now onto the next scene of which stoick and the other vikings goes and tries to find the dragons and nest, now this scene Im glad for what they did for this part. They basically extented the scene into showing what had happened to them while in the mist and looking for the nest with being attacked and stuff and guys omg, even though this dragon wasnt fully shown it was still mantioned in the svene and guess which one it was

THE SEASHOCKER, So happy dude even though they didnt show them fully it showed them attacking and knocking over the ships so 10/10, horray man.
Okay next scene so we get to the next traing arena scene and there were some minor changes mostly in the what they say, here are the changes, snotlout not flirting with astrid barley if at all, astrid while running away from stormfly, stormfly doesnt cause that cool domino affect that causes astrid to go flying and land on hiccup but instead just knockes down the walls and gest stuck astrid, with astrid landing near hiccup under a wall takes his sheild with her axe and smacks stormfly and scares her back into the cage, then its all pretty much the same after that but also the twins dont say, tuffnut "oo love on the battlefield" ruffnut "she could do better" yeah they dont say anything in the live action. Sigh
okay next scene when hiccup goes to find toothless with the shield, for one main change was his shield and didnt get stuck as it showed him just walking around with it, nope he throws it aside, toothless kinda creeps on hiccup but more surprises him, the rest is pretty much the same for that scene thankfully, even the part with hiccup getting through toothless's drawing, and the hand scene was so good dude it was perfect and the music for that scene was excellent.
next the small scene with the group and gobber are around a fire eating is pretty much all the same, but tuffnut's tattoo wasnt really mentioned when hiccup ran off, the rest of that scene, entirely the same to the og so good.
Next the two main scenes with hiccup creating the first tailfin and him trying to get toothless in it, toothless flying off with hiccup on and then them falling and hiccup yelling is all pretty much the same as the og in the live action thankfully.
Next scene with the training grounds, its mostly the same but ruffnut talks to astrid in this scene saying "yk us girls have to stay together against those boys yk, heh" and then astrid saying "hush" DUDE if ruffnut doesnt at least start sounding like ruffnut in the next film im filling complaints But yeah that entire arena sceen is mostly the same after that.

sigh anyways onto the next big scene before i lose my sanity
Okay so for the most part of hiccup making the gear, training toothless and using this training in the training arena is kinda mostly the same to the original here are just some changes to the live action though. Okay for one the scenes where hiccup is testing out the new fail fin gear are slightly switched around with toothless falling into a field of dandelions first and instead of it making the dragons act like cats on catnip but instead makes it where they sneeze and fall all over the place. I mean i dont mind the change does make the dragons act more silly but its defiantly a change. but one major scene they did get rid of next was when hiccup and toothless fell and hiccup got stuck attached to toothless
and so the entire scene of hiccup sneaking toothless into the village and almost getting caught by astrid wasn't in the live action.

Anyways next scene before I go crazy.
next we got when stoick and the other vikings come back and it shows and tells us more that yes vikings did die while on the trip and shows more of snotlout and spitelout's tensed relationship which im glad they added in the live action to give more into what snotlout goes through with his dad just like rtte did. NEXT
then we got the test flying scene and for the most part thank god plus they made it more dramatic but made toothless barley smack hiccup, so for the most part that scene was the same as the orginal just more dramatic.
NOW. the one very immportant scene that they got rid of for some reason that makes the ending and how hiccup acted during the red death fight.
youtube
THIS SCENE THEY GOT RID OF THIS ENTIRE SCENE DUDE OML , I might actually crash out. even before that they did do where toothless does fire and hiccup gets burned. Bro. they showed picures beofre the trailer even came out for the live action showing the most perfect rocks for this scene and you're telling me they got rid of it dude. Its literally the main reason hiccup was able to figure out how to defeat the red death so them getting rid of this scene makes no sense as to how hiccup acted during the red death fight.

Time to crash out actualy this time bro I cant.
Sighhhh anyways next scene with the stoick and hiccup's talk in the hiccups room in the forge, which in the live action is the same thank good, even the breast hat joke is in it thank god
Now from the next scene with hiccup winning the training arena to the test flight scene is pretty much all the excat same to the ogrinal film, only difference in that entere span is toothless dropping astrid on a cliff side and not a tree, oh and something I forgot is that gothi while looking different also using more than just a staff but also using bones for telling the futcure and giving hope and while also watching the teens train like in the orginal she uses a abacus which if you didnt know looks like this

which i thought was kinda cool and also gives gothi more screen time.
Anyways next then with the romantic flight scene all the way to hiccup going into the arena to "kill" the monstruous nightmare is pretty much the excat copy of the orginal thank the lore.
NOW time to rant about how cool hookfang looks. OML dude he looks so cool and not only does he yk have fire coming from his body but small bits of lava mixed with the fire also come out, Dude seeing that in the theaters was so cool, it was just Chefs kiss. anyways back to the areana scene which was mostly the same just hiccup doesnt really throw his helmet to the ground he just kinda ends up setting it down softly and then yk the rest is kinda the same then we get to toothless and hookfang's fight and dude, its so intense like hookfang was literally getting flinged around and full on getting thrown and like the fight is obviously similar to the original but still its pretty intense but yeah that scene was great. then yk the rest was the same to the original.
Now Next major scene, hiccup and stoick's fight which is mostly the same just hiccup not mentioning a whole lot on how he found the nest but other than that the tension and the words where the same as to the original now onto the scene of the viking departing to the nest.
With showing a lot more ships and kids, i say that just because I realized besides the teens theres not a whole lot of younger kids shown and in the live action it shows more kinds some with hats some with tiny horned helmets which i though were adorable. also they added a muzzle to toothless when setting him on the ship then instead of hiccup staying and watching them leave in the live action he watches his father then walks away to a different part of the island which even though its a small change it doesnt affect the film so i dont care about it.
and hiccup's and astrids talk is mostly the same just not as tensed as the orginal.
Then the teens in the arena following hiccup in the live action is different for one the area is more darker like it night time and while its mostly the same but also different it still gives off the same affect as it did in the original.
then we get to stoick and the other vikings heading towards to dragons nest and its pretty much all the same but with stoick looking even more tensed and the area being darker. then that scene between that all the way to the red death entering the scene is pretty much all the same but slightly different as you would have guess what still the same towards the og
Then we got red death's entrance and boy was it good the fight itself with the red death was really good, OH dude, they showed vikings actually dying and getting crushed by the red death like in one scene a group of vikings get crushed by a big rock then another by red death's foot, definitely unexpected that they even showed that cause it was basically like, WOAH that just happened anyways some changes in the red death fight was that stoick and gobber didnt throw those spikes at red death but instead move a catapult together to throw one of those big rocks at her instead, and another change was instead of astrid almost getting caught by red death, stormfly basically got stuck in red death's teeth and so astrid jumped into her mouth and set stormfly free. then after that the rest of that entire fight see is the same just way more intense plus i legit think they either made red death 10x bigger or maybe she just looks bigger since its live action.
Either way the entire scene plus hiccup falling and stoick finding hiccup alive is very intense so the point if you were to take it out of context and tell someone that fill is only pg-rated i think they would be surprised
anyways now finally onto the ending scene some changes was that yk house still blue, still now letting that go btw, a crowd of vikings didnt come running up to greet hiccup, plus it showed more regular villagers enjoying the new life becuase of hiccup and at the end showing the group flying in more wid spread areas like the ocean than just the village and so that brings me to the end.

thank you, thank you.
Now my final sayings on the live action.
So overall the live action is decent, it defiantly could have been better if some scenes werent deleted or changed and yk astrid and ruffnut's character in the live action, but when i said this movie had potential it really did. The live action not only stayed mostly true to the original but game some scenes more dramatic flares and gave more recognitions to both the other vikings and villagers and a perspective on snotlout and spitelout's relationship.
for the movie overall though I give it a rating of 7.5/10, just because it got rid of a very good scene that makes hiccups actions during the red death fight make more sense and plus how they made astrid more selfish and ruffnut not as obnoxious as her og self is. Oh and that damn blue house, never forgiving for that but its whatever for now. Plus while the acting in the beginning of the movie was iffy once it progressed the acting got better for the most part, especially red death battle the acting was amazing, and how some minor things were change but oh well
For me though im just glad the original creator of httyd, Cressida Cowell, seemed happy through it all and plus the experience in the movie made me feel like I was 3,7, and 12 years old again seeing the httyd movies and do believe that this live action is decently good, could definitely use some improvement but still overall good, and thats saying something for a live action.
And yes while not everyone may not agree with me or believe this live action was good and thats okay everyone has their own opinons on this live action movie and im not gonna jedge anyone. Except those who hate it just cause of how astrid looks then im judging you, HARD, anyways
Now we just wait for the second live action to come out and that pne hopefully will be better in some of the aspects I had mentioned, plus show more dragons that were only showed in the tv series.
Anyways if ya'll actually read through all that then good job cause im surprised you even would but I mean also the main reviews on tumblr so far that i've found havent been as detailed so if anyone found this review good ty.
#httyd#httyd live action#how to train your dragon#spoiler alert#httyd live action review#dw i didnt glaze every single part of it cause obviously the live action needs some work to it and could be better#if ya'll actually read through all that im genuially surprised.

How it feels to see those influencers on social media, specifically instagram, go and watch an early realse of the httyd live action and be like
“ I never saw the original but..” ARRRGHH NO STOP PLEASE YOU’RE MAKING IT HARDER FOR ME TO DEFEND THE LIVE ACTION I ALREADY KNOW ITS GONNA BE IFFY BUT STOP PLEASE 😭😭
Like it’s so tiring seeing these mid influencers go and see and love the movie but then dog shit on the original like bro please, even though dean himself still loves the original can these so called influencers stop dog shitting on the og and yeah you can like the live action, I’m gonna go see it next week but please actually appreciate the original film from 2010 and acknowledge that the live action will never be better than the og please for the love of god

Literally that’s all I ask for
#httyd#how to train your dragon#how to train your dragon live action#these influencers on social media are making struggle to keep sane#I am still 50/50 with the live action as I think it has potential butttt#yk what I mean

“𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥“ - 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐝
Ever since, the first trailer for the live-action was dropped, I’ve always wanted to create a scenario wherein animated Astrid met her live-action version. Astrid definitely deserves this begotten appreciation.

Idk why but the way toothless’s eyes look in this poster looks odd to me and his head shape slightly so I changed it to make it better

I don’t mind this head shape a lot I just think if they smoothed his head out a little bit it would make a big change which is what’s I did
Obviously the poster isn’t bad it’s pretty good but the eyes just looked a little off
Also idrc what anyone says live action toothless can still be cute he’s not gonna look cute 24/7 obviously but taking screenshots of him in the most unflattering way to prove he’s ugly is not how you do it, plus yes toothless in some shots he does look ugly

Besides I genuinely don’t think he’s not that bad looking obviously he still looks a bit too cartoony in a sense but I think he looks pretty decent. Could they have done better absolutely, 100%, but at the end of the days I think this movie will do good cause for me it’s seeing the original author of the whole httyd universe, Cressida cowell, be so happy with what her world has become and ykw I’m happy for her if she’s glad this is happening then so am I even if I don’t entirely agree with it.
Plus just the entire cast, original director, author, music producer just all of them being so apart of this just makes me happy
