i think in general The Boy and the Heron is a lot more straightforward than ppl give it credit for, if you go into it with the knowledge that its very bluntly autobiographical. i cant blame anyone for not being familiar with miyazaki's life story and working relationship, but its funny to me how much sense the movie starts to make if you understand that the characters, locations, events, etc. are all direct representations of his perspective on people and institutions from his real life (the heron is toshio suzuki, the tower where most of the movie takes place represents studio ghibli itself in a lot of ways, granduncle is isao takahata, etc.) but one scene thats always kind of baffled me was the one in the delivery room
ive never really been sure how to read this part. it strikes me as something way more personal than anything else we see in the movie, and it baffles me so much that it makes me start to question if im misguided with how sure of myself i think i am when i talk about the rest of it. its such a curveball. why is natsuko even in the magic world in the first place? you expect her to be oblivious to the way it works or even its existence as a whole, but she goes in alone and finds her way to the delivery room to have a baby. Why does she even react like that when mahito finds her inside? its so interesting. i honestly think shes the most mysterious character in the whole movie, from the perspective of the fiction itself, but also from the perspective of what she means in the context of the grand metaphor miyazaki was shooting for with this script. 100 out of 10 movie all time classic forever

hello! love your work, i’m currently watching vinesauce and he said you curated this playlist of videos of some outstanding animations that we have been watching tonight. i was wondering if this playlist is public or if i could have a list of the videos that we watched?
thank you so much!
hi! all of the videos that i sent him were part of a zip file on my pc. i think some of them aren't available for free online anywhere, so there isn't one complete playlist of all of them, but I can at least give you a list of the names of all the videos he showed in the order that they appeared
Fantasmagorie (Émile Cohl, 1908) Gertie the Dinosaur (Winsor McCay, 1914) The Sinking of the Lusitania (Winsor McCay, 1918) Cannon Fodder (Katsuhiro Otomo, 1995) The Thief and the Cobbler (Richard Williams, 1992-Present) The King and the Mockingbird (Paul Grimault, 1980) Treasure Island (David Cherkassky, 1988) The Blackbird (Norman McLaren, 1958) Rooty Toot Toot (John Hubley, 1951) Labyrinth Labyrinthos (Rintaro, 1987) The Old Lady and the Pigeons (Sylvain Chomet, 1997) The Overcoat (Yuri Norstein, Unfinished)
