my friend just reminded me that no matter how friendly/respectful my mother is going to be to me i do not have to forgive her for things she has put me through and so.

if you have a decent or even good relationship with your parents now, you are not required to forgive them for things they have done. you are allowed to hold them accountable & expect them to try to make amends. them being polite/kind does not automatically fix all past abuses but it sure is a fucking start.
