So, How Stuff Works has a new podcast, called Dressed, and it’s about fashion history. So far, it centers on western fashion, but one episode in particular was quite illuminating. It was about a recent exhibition on fashion and the body, which chronicles and analyzes the way our idea of an “ideal body” has evolved over the centuries.
One segment in particular, while the hosts were interviewing the curator of the exhibition, really stuck with me. They were talking about the shift away from corsets, as women’s clothing became modernized. The curator talked about how corsets weren’t just about creating the ideal body shape, that they were about containing and controlling the female body. This is evidenced by the existence of maternity corsets and children’s corsets, neither of which were designed to actually shape the body, but were nevertheless considered an essential part of “appropriate” dress. Without a corset, a woman or young girl was seen as inappropriately dressed, practically naked, even when pregnant or prepubescent.
Later, as corsets began falling out of fashion, we start to see the rise of fitness culture. It was immediate, and for a while, corsets were simply replaced with girdles and other shapewear. But with the advent of more form- fitting and revealing clothing in the 1960s, which didn’t allow for girdles and the like, suddenly there was an explosion in the popularity of dieting and fitness culture. Gyms proliferated, fad diets began popping up everywhere, diet pills became hugely popular.
The point that the curator made was that we, as a society, shifted from containing and controlling women’s bodies with clothing to doing so via diet and exercise. She called it “the internalizing of the corset.” She pointed out that women’s bodies have always been seen as inherently inappropriate, sexual, and weak, and that the control we exert over our own bodies through the obsession with “fitness” is no different than what our ancestors did by insisting that a woman is only appropriately dressed if she is contained by layers and layers of fabric and steel.
I knew all of this history already, but the women on this podcast connected it all together in a way I hadn’t thought of before. The way we dictate women’s bodies to fit an impossible ideal isn’t just about beauty, it’s about control, and the inherent view that women’s bodies need to be contained.

Btw, the fact that no international journalists are allowed into Gaza - unless they're embedded with the IOF, who is allowed to censure any sensitive information you get - should be enough for you to accept that Zionists aren't trustworthy.
