I dislike Endeavor, but I dislike what the Fandom has done to his character more.
The BNHA Fandom has overdramatically and excessively villainized Endeavor and his character; an explanation of why this is a detriment to understanding the story: A Character Study.
To preface, I do not condone any sort of domestic abuse, eugenics, or any other questionable decisions made by Endeavor in the run of BNHA’s story. And do I particularly like Endeavor? Honestly, not at all. However, it seems that people relentlessly bash his character, arc, and place in the story to frankly unbelievable extremes that directly interfere with the logic of the plot. This essay will cover his heroics, Touya, Fuyumi and Natsuo, Shouto, Rei, and his personality/closing notes.
Point One: Endeavor is canonically a VERY good hero. One common trend that pops up in a lot of fanfiction and fan content about Endeavor is that he creates excessive casualties and property damage. First of all, this has never been explicitly stated in the series, save for a handful of moments explaining that Endeavor’s quirk is naturally destructive and requires great precision. This “headcanon” directly contradicts how the world operates.
Endeavor is the number two hero. This is not an easy feat. It was explained during the Hero Billboard awards that Endeavor’s popularity is lower than that of both Hawks and Best Jeanist. Implying that during the time before All Might retired, Endeavor ranked fifth in popularity. Now, these numbers might not be very important to some people, but this directly means that Endeavor was able to rise to rank two simply out of sheer efficiency, ability, and drive. This means Endeavor relies solely on ability to rise through ranks.
Something like this would be frankly impossible if Endeavor had any problems with excessive property damage or casualties. While the HPSC has its own breed of issues and corruption, it is frankly unlikely they would have let something like this slide if it was steeped in fact. And his blatant talent for heroics is part of what makes the conflict with his family complicated. Whether his kids like it or not, Endeavor helps a lot of people. He may not be a good person, but he does good things for others.
Many people like to fixate on his obsession with All Might when it comes to his desire to be a hero. Yet, Endeavor’s original motivation stems from his father, who died to save a little girl. While his goals began to lean more corrupt over time, it does not change that, at the core of the matter, Endeavor wanted and genuinely cared about saving people.
On some level, Endeavor’s frustration with All Might somewhat makes sense as well. Now, this isn’t a justification, but imagine you worked tirelessly for years, clawing your way to the peak, but no matter how hard you worked, it was impossible. This one man was better than you, and as far as you could tell, being at the top took nothing from him. That would be incredibly frustrating. Especially when that person consistently acts blasé about everything with a wide grin.
Point Two: What happened to Touya was very messed up, but Touya (Dabi) is arguably as bad, if not worse than Endeavor. Before the pitchforks come out, it is clear to say that Dabi is somewhat of a fan favorite. People seem to fit him into this box of moral justice and want to fight back against abuse, but Touya’s actions don’t portray that very much in the confines of the story.
From the episodes and chapters that detail Touya’s flashback, when he was an only child, it was clear that while Endeavor wasn’t the best father, he wasn’t exactly abusive. While he trained Touya for greatness, Touya actively reciprocated this. Endeavor’s Agency Arc made a very concrete case that while Endeavor was driven, he was, in fact, a very good teacher. I doubt that Endeavor pushed to the point of detriment when it comes to training during this time.
Tumblr media
This is not the face of a man pushing his child to the brink to get better for training. He’s patient and talented; in another life, if he hadn’t been pushed to the brink, it would be very likely for Endeavor to teach at UA. While Endeavor might have pushed for excellence, it is unlikely that this desire went further than parents pressuring a child to get top marks in school.
When Endeavor discovered Touya’s health problems, we can see he is genuinely upset about that. In the image below, he doesn’t appear angry, but horrified.
Tumblr media
While we are unaware of the exact age of Natsuo, we know that there was at least a relatively decent gap between him and Fuyumi, who is only one year younger than Touya. It is rather reasonable to assume that Endeavor somewhat abandoned having more children when faced with the consequences. He had never realized that his plans could have such lasting and detrimental effects on his children. He isn’t as heartless as the Fandom often characterizes him. He was likely afraid all his children would end up like Touya. (Also, as a side note, the reason why he didn’t for some time was also because he was satisfied with Touya).
In the end, as seen in the episode detailing Touya’s backstory, Endeavor only chose to continue having children to dissuade Touya. While doing this did end up producing Shoto, a perfect heir, it doesn’t change the fact that his original goal at the time wasn’t to surpass All Might. Sure, his method was extremely messed up, but Endeavor certainly cared for Touya.
Every scene depicting Endeavor discovering Touya was still using his quirk has him with an expression of complete and utter fear, concern, and aggravation. He wasn’t mad that Touya wanted to be noticed; he was angry that Touya was hurting himself. As Endeavor said, Touya is just like him in stubbornness; he won’t give up. Do I believe that everything could have been avoided if Endeavor acknowledged Touya? Not exactly.
If the generally accepted consensus that Natsuo is 19 is true, and Fuyumi is about 23. Assuming Touya was around 3 or 4 when he manifested his quirk, then Endeavor spent an entire year trying to genuinely dissuade him. In some ways, Touya is his father’s son, and, likely, nothing would ever truly dissuade him from trying to become a hero. Touya is very clearly not well and likely has some kind of mental disorder separate from Endeavor’s poor parenting. This is not blaming the situation on any sort of mental issue, but it shows that it exacerbated the problem.
After all, he, as a child, blamed Shoto for all his problems and then tried to attack him. While Endeavor made a poor decision, isolating Shoto and not Touya, who clearly needed more attention, it is a little understandable from his very messed-up point of view. Despite understanding that it really isn’t Shoto’s fault later in his life, it is clear he still resents him. At the end, when he dies, his ideal family lacks Shoto.
Tumblr media
And his terrible childhood doesn’t change the fact that he is, in fact, a villain. While Endeavor can be abusive and generally cruel, he does not kill and hurt for no reason. Dabi might have been trying to get back at his father, but he has a large kill count. Even before the war started, Dabi was a criminal. Yes, he was somewhat manipulated by All for One, but that isn’t exactly a pass for the destruction and death he has accumulated. While his motivation makes sense, the way the episode actually lays out his backstory somewhat weakens his reasoning.
Most fans headcannoned Dabi’s backstory and laid it thick for his tragic upbringing. However, in reality, while he had a shitty childhood, it wasn’t exactly the terrible injustice fans built it up to be. Touya did all this just to get his father’s attention. Was his father a terrible person? Yes. But the extent to which Touya took his situation is somewhat wild in context. If, hypothetically, we switched the positions of Touya and Fuyumi or Touya and Natsuo, it is difficult to believe that Natsuo or Fuyumi would turn out like Touya. In the end, Touya’s downfall wasn’t an abusive father or hero society, but his own pride and stubbornness.
His descent to villainy holds a reasonable motive, but that doesn’t change that this was his choice. Touya was the one who continued to harm himself, and he is the one who burned Sekoto Peak. If individuals want to cite Touya coming back after he was “saved” by AFO, then yes, he did return. However, he wasn’t angry because Endeavor was treating Shouto poorly; he was angry because Touya viewed himself as a “failure”. Touya is a lot like Endeavor. Single-minded and unable to view the bigger picture.
Touya does not really care about people. He doesn’t care about being a hero. He cares about his father looking at him. He willingly tried to blow himself and tens to hundreds of civilians without a care in the world. Tragic backstory or no, Dabi is a terrible person and perhaps even worse than Endeavor.
Endeavor was arguably a terrible father to Touya, but it doesn’t change the fact that there is heaps of evidence proving that he truly loved Touya. We could go as far as to claim that Endeavor loved Touya more than his other children. The difference is that Touya decided to double down, and when Endeavor is finally confronted with the consequences of his actions, he bends over and repents. Does this justify or forgive his actions? No way. But this is something more substantial than being a mass murderer.
Point 3: The Forgotten Children—Fuyumi and Natsuo. This is going to be a relatively short section. There is never any indication that Endeavor abused or hurt Fuyumi or Natsuo aside from general neglect. Is this still messed up? Yes. However, neglectful parents are a dime a dozen, especially in the context of BNHA. The fact that we over-villainize Endeavor for it just seems hypocritical. Natsuo’s perception of Endeavor and Touya is warped as well. Understandably, he grew up with the beliefs he did, but Natsuo never really grasped the extent of Touya and his self-destructive nature. Fuyumi and Natsuo both had rough childhoods. They did not deserve that, but their situation is interesting. Neither of them will ever want for anything in life. What Endeavor doesn’t provide in affection, he provides in funds. Fuyumi and Natsuo can choose any career, any school, anything they want; they can have it. Do these facts make neglect alright? No. But it should be clear that Endeavor never physically abused them.
Point 4: Shouto, Zuko, and Parallels. The first time we are ever introduced to the situation is through Shouto. Because it is Shouto telling the story, fans quickly made assumptions and headcanons about the situation. This is where a lot of the problems stem from. Is Endeavor an abusive asshole who should be in jail? Yes. However, this is not real life, and the purpose of stories is to interact with situations and circumstances in a safe manner. The Fandom’s drive to make all characters one-dimensional is frankly annoying.
It is fair to say that there are a lot of connections between Shouto and Zuko, and that makes sense. In a way, the Fandom has fit Endeavor into the same box as Ozai. Which is wrong and incorrect. Shouto directly colors our image of Endeavor, and that makes sense. He is a child trying to grapple with his parents. Most children will never look deeper into their parents. But Shouto did. The only reason why Shouto began to accept Endeavor isn’t because he forgives him, but because he looked deeper and realized that his father is more complicated than he assumed.
There isn’t really a lot of defense for Endeavor here. Most of the fandom's interpretations of this general scenario are accurate. Endeavor pushed Shouto to train to a detrimental degree and kept pushing. He was desperate. Isolating Shouto was also harmful. There isn’t really much to say in this general area. I’d argue that maybe the severity could be lessened, as it’s unlikely Endeavor hit Shoto like he hits Rei outside of training. However, Shouto’s perception of how a child would reasonably perceive the situation definitely colored our opinion of Endeavor.
Point 5: Rei and the Fandom cuts her too much slack about certain things. Let’s backtrack to a couple of things. First of all, the quirk marriage. Rei claims she had a choice, which is debatable in itself, as she was experiencing financial pressure from her parents. However, outside of that, we can view the marriage quite similarly to an arranged marriage. In the beginning, before Shoto, the relationship seemed functional as an arranged marriage. There were no signs of abuse at the time, besides some neglect.
There are lines and indications that Rei and Endeavor had some romantic feelings at the time as well. While the intentions weren’t the most moral, the marriage was not “forced”. Arranged marriages are things that still exist today, and while the practices of things such as dowries and bride prices are frowned upon, they are not completely absent. Especially with more traditional families, we can argue that the Todoroki and Himura families were based on their homes and clothing.
It is fair to say that Rei had more say in the household at the time. If we dive into the age gaps between children, there’s roughly four or so years' age difference between them all, save for Fuyumi and Touya. This implies Endeavor waited for quirks to manifest before choosing to have another child in terms of Natsuo and Shoto. The reason why Fuyumi was the exception was because Rei wanted to have another child (Endeavor also wanted a child who inherited Rei’s quirk as well). This was Rei’s decision, which implies that she had some autonomy within the household to be able to make such major decisions, which Endeavor agreed to.
Even in the beginning of Touya’s descent and right after Touya attacked Shoto, Rei was a somewhat solid figure in the house. She wasn’t afraid to hand out scathing remarks to Endeavor’s choices, saying he was “running away from his problems”. While Rei took a typical homemaker role with the husband being the head of the house, this is not an abusive situation. Whether people like it or not, it is a typical arrangement for a household.
Many people were somewhat upset or triggered by Rei claiming that Touya’s situation was as much her fault as Endeavor’s. And while people might cite the abuse in later years, the formative years of Touya’s life were “happy” to some extent. Rei should be somewhat at fault for how Touya turned out. Like it or not, Rei had the authority to act in Touya’s life and try to dissuade him. However, naturally, Rei is a passive person, but that passivity turned into negligence. Rei may claim Endeavor was “running away”, but in the end, she wasn’t doing much either.
Rei wasn’t this poor, choiceless abuse victim pre-Shoto. While the relationship would eventually develop towards that as Touya’s situation created more rifts in the family, Rei was relatively happy. People treat her as blameless for the other three children in her life, but that is not the case. Rei’s choices and general demeanor are what led to a lot of issues that might have been resolved if she had chosen to take a more active role.
The fact that Rei gave up trying to stop Touya the moment he started criticizing her for being sold off in a marriage and letting him be born is a problem. She gave up on him in a way. That cannot be a faultless action.
Of course, the things that follow are not Rei’s fault. None of the abuse she endured for trying to protect Shoto or for not stopping Touya is or ever will be okay. From this point forward, Rei is a textbook domestic abuse situation. This is not something Endeavor should or can be forgiven for. If people put more emphasis on this situation over others, I wouldn’t be writing this. People add stuff to his character to make him irredeemable when there’s already this, which causes issues within the continuity of the story.
The one thing Rei can be cut slack for is what happened to Shoto. She was mentally unstable and spiralling. Was it okay for her to do? No. But this was a volatile situation that would have occurred eventually in this environment.
While this does not make anything better, it is important to note that Endeavor did situate her in a very nice and high-quality mental facility. He didn’t take responsibility, but did do this extra step. He got her help instead of just discarding her.
There is some distaste that Rei forgives Endeavor. I do believe there is a case for both sides, given how the situation completely and utterly deteriorated, but for the necessity of the story involving Touya, I can understand why this is the direction taken.
Finally, Shoto’s statements about Rei. While nothing he said was directly untrue, he did color the story in a way that made the situation more black and white than it actually was. I believe this is what made some parts of the fandom unable to accept the bigger picture later. Like it or not, Shoto’s introduction of the situation might have indirectly hurt the way people perceive Endeavor and Touya’s story.
Point 6: Endeavor and Bakugo, and Volatile Personalities. Endeavor has a relatively sour personality. He has a temper that allowed him to devolve to textbook abuse and become the very villains he tried to stop. As a person, he is obsessed wth being at the top and winning. He has little care for popularity and believes he can rise in ranks with only power and talent. Sounds an awful lot like someone else.
Simply put, Bakugo and Endeavor are clearly written to be mirrors. Bakugo’s eavesdropping in the Sports Festival was a wake-up call. It’s not exactly hard to believe that Bakugo could have gone down the same path as Endeavor if he hadn’t watched himself.
Endeavor was never meant to be seen as a good person. However, Endeavor was meant to be one who was irrevocably changed by true heroism. The story can mostly be boiled down to what it means to be a hero. Endeavor’s is about finding that and then realizing his own errors. It’s about society moving forward.
Horikoshi presumably does not condone abuse of any sort. However, stories exist to help people experience and break down complicated issues in a safe environment. It is a disservice not only to the writer but to ourselves if we blindly put people into binary boxes without examining what a story has to say. This was never about Endeavor being a good or bad person. It was a study on how people can do terrible things, and the realization that it is not the way forward. Endeavor is a character that I don’t particularly like at all. He’s likely one of my least favorite characters, but I can appreciate an author trying to say something about our world and crafting complicated issues.
Endeavor is a bad person. However, the Fandom’s mischaracterization is not the way to go. We need to start being able to deal with complicated characters better than just turning issues into black and white morality arguments, unable to read deeper into what our media is trying to tell us.
That's it, thanks for listening to me ramble for like seven pages.

Do you think Tokoyami ever takes Hawks flying like Hawks did during work studies? Or does Hawks outright refuse because he doesn't want to acknowledge what he can no longer have

Dumb random question
So when Toga gives blood to Uraraka, the blood stays the same even after she dies/transformation wears off. Or else Uraraka would have died from her body rejecting the blood. So does that mean anything that is removed from Toga such as hair or blood will remain even after she transforms back? Cause if so, is this or is this not an infinite blood hack?

So I fell down the bnha rabbit hole again and like I was reading a fanfic where it was like "its hard to play poker with someone who has a lie detector quirk" and like no????
Where's the lie? Would saying "raise" constitute as a lie if you had bad cards? Thats a statement, what you're gonna do? And like I guess if you asked outright, but like thats very much cheating.
Also Tsukauchi's quirk is so odd. Like how do you know??? Like most fans have made it the perception of the truth and most law enforment don't really like stand on lie detector tests, so I feel like a perception of truth could really mess things up. Also what if someone had a quirk to give and take memories. They could literally dance around his quirk.
Quirks are odd, like some fall into this weird biology-ish vibe and others are just wtf

Mild Superman 2025 spoilers
POV when it was revealed that the Hammer guy was a clone made by Lex, did anyone else think for just a moment that it was Conner and not some random clone.
I would have actually screamed on the spot if it was, but oh well :(. Here's to hoping Conner shows up one day

Im not saying aot is better than fmab, however, I am a sucker for political intrigue and circular storytelling. While fmab has political intrigue its a lot less complicated and a lot more one sided than aot's. The nuance just scratches my brain just right.
Also I'm in love with Hange but that's neither here nor there

Spoilers for new Genshin interlude teaser ig
My general thoughts
Ok bruh? What???
Firstly, those little cubes seem like they are their own little ecosystems, so hypothetically since we don't quite know, they could be other worlds?? Or prototype Arks. If we go with the theory that Teyvat is a mismatch of multiple different locations then it is possible each of those cubes are the "source code" for Teyvat. They also belong to Asmoday, so its very interesting about what's going on with these cubes. It seems like the life and history of the people though were made by Rhinedottir and Istaroth. So maybe they're incapable of sustaining life.
Second, other people can see Celestia! This is good to know since I'm pretty sure besides seeing it in game as a player, no npc ever mentions it. Unless its a Khaenri'ah thing. Pierro what are your eyes doing lol? 👁👁
Third, Shade reveals! This is great, crazy but great. They want to intervene but only allowed somewhat? I wonder if Gold can intervene more given her situation. Also the fact that Celestia being asleep is noted also by the shades is interesting. I wonder why they didn't do anything in Fontaine. But given Pierro's monologue, I guess they were just totally shocked at the concept of a god dying. This also implies that the Fatui want to kill a God, probably the Primordial One
Fourth, its great that we finally got 100% confirmation that the Sustainer is Asmoday/Shade of Space since thats mostly been speculation. Also switching sides??? "Loving her new master more than herself"?? Okay so Paimon then??? Its still a theory but Paimon is looking awfully sus rn. Also Asmoday just has little cubes sitting around of random locations and people. Like bruh why? Girl is a collector ig
Fifth, so Rhinedottir is in an interesting position now. She technically controls Naberius and her powers, but Naberius still has some agency over what Rhinedottir can do. So she can't rebel against the Heavenly Principles like the Shades assume Asmoday has. Though it seems Rhinedottir mostly only cares about her research and Naberius so I don't think she minds too much. But Ronova makes it clear that both of them can create life? Since apparently there's a difference and its very silly that the Shades are just chill with it, but it seems Naberius is fond of Gold so maybe thats why. The fact that Gold is doing experiments in Asmoday's cubes are interesting though. I don't really have a theory as to why yet, but something to chew on. And that thye can't sustain life. Hypothetically these cubes could be a prototype for the Atlas of the New World maybe?
Sixth, Istaroth sharing the same voice actor as Venti in every language is crazy. Really asks what the true connection between the two is. That one video that went viral with time powers Venti might not be that far off in reality. Also Istaroth is able to give "history". I assume the "them" could either refer to the people in the cube or the Abyss Twin. If its in the cube, Istaroth can basically create backstory out of thin air which is terrifying. Thats like rewriting memories which could be interesting on the matters of our twin. Or the Abyss Twin by making them be recorded by Teyvat. And because she was "bored"???
Seventh, Shades were in Khaenri'ah. So its likely our Sibling might have seen one. That raises an interesting question since Asmoday "switched sides" from speculation of the other shades. This is likely when that would have happened because the video states that this is the first time not all of them were present. What if us getting captured was part of a big plan? Khaenri'ah got punished for "gazing at the gods" if Pierro's monologue is anything to go by. This is fascinating.
Eighth, ok what is up with Istaroth man? Whose side is she on, because for a while she seemed to defy the HP due to Enkenomiya and The Sakura. But no? Ig? She still loyal or she's playing the long game which is also very likely
Ninth, so the Shades are very much aware of the Twins because of that beginning story. They don't actually speak about them. Its just in the history said earlier by the cube people.
Ok tenth because Im running out of time. The story at the beginning is interesting because it seems that Asmoday is not doing her job? Also the people started to die when they got to her portion. And I know Ronova is killing them, but maybe its also cursed to not tell certain information? Like secret contracts of silence.
Lastly, Columbina is either hiding, ran away, or kidnapped to Nod Krai. Given the fact they mentioned the Frost Moon Scions, it could means she is one of them which I believe is a pending theory. So I'm guessing she'll be our main Harbinger in Nod Krai. Palestar Edict is interesting though, because it was to send the Harbingers to Nod Krai but Columbina is assumably there already??? So what does this mean.
Also the glitching. Why the glitching!?? Teyvat simulation failure lol?

Maybe the reason why most titans couldn't talk is because they all descended from and created by Ymir who also could not speak because her tongue was cut out. Like Ymir's story mirrors a lot of the main points of the actual plot.
And maybe the reasons why Titans have an unstoppable drive to eat humans is because king Fritz's last order to his duaghters was to ensure future generations ate their parents.
Even two thousand years later the Eldians are slaves to Fritz and his actions.
(Side tangent. I feel like it would have been interesting if Ymir's daughters collectively had nine children to line up with the nine titans.)
