Aunt Lute Books is a San Francisco based nonprofit press dedicated to publishing literature by women whose voices have been traditionally underrepresented in publishing: women whose voices shift boundaries, challenge borders, and defy expectations. Since 1982, we’ve brought revolutionary queer women and women of color to the forefront of literature. RSVP to our ¡Cuéntamelo! A Night of Celebration event on 10/27 and celebrate queer Latinx histories by clicking here!

Valentine's Day is a good time to bring back this lovely song from Olivia on the Record.
Get a copy of the book here: https://www.auntlute.com/olivia-on-the-record
[Alt text: Page reads: On February 14, 1974, Meg and I celebrated Valentine’s Day. I had asked her what she wanted her gift to be and she told me she wanted a new apron. And that’s what she got. Then she sat me down in the living room and played her gift to me: “Valentine Song.” It was once only dining and dancing Evening kisses, morning smiles And then you said, “Let’s go off together Alone for a while” And I loved you at first for your wicked eyes And the laughter that loosens your bones And your soft curls And the passions that I’ve never known . . . . . . . . . . . Yes, we bargained for doubtful tomorrows But our past grows richer each day And more and more, I cannot see me going away With happiness here for our taking Resting easy, feeling strong As I delight in the life that we’re making I sing you this valentine song.]

Name: Andrenne Harbin, Marketing Intern
Current Read: The Core by Peter V. Brett
Next book(s) on your list: Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyami
My current read is The Core, the latest novel in Peter V. Brett’s Demon Cycle series. I love this series! It’s about the struggle between humanity and corelings. Corelings are various types of demons who appear on the surface at night to wreak havoc and kill/eat people. It’s a beautifully developed series with a world full of myth, history, solid characters and adventure.
The series is told through the perspective of multiple characters, but is centered on Arlen Bales a.k.a The Warded Man; who is fed up with fearing the night and begins to paint wards onto his skin. Wards are magical symbols created by humanity but the knowledge of them has been lost to time. They have various uses such as repelling or killing demons, hardening, healing, producing wind or fire, etc. Anyway Arlen is basically a badass; he is the first human to put wards directly on his skin, resulting in him absorbing magic (badass alert!). With this new power he begins to brave the night and battle demons. Through his actions Arlen inadvertently becomes a symbol of prophecy and power for humanity, spurring a war against the corelings.
This series will change your life! Not only will it take you on an M rated Harry Potter-esque journey packed with bloody intense fighting scenes, it also has characters that are so in depth and complex you start to think your reading actual events. PLUS the underlying theme expresses the importance of people banding together and acknowledging each other’s humanity. Do yourself a favor and read this series!
 P.S,
The women are the real power in the series and inspired me to start martial arts.
Andrenne is a shameless fantasy/sci-fi reader. She loves to pet other people’s dogs and can’t wait to have her own. When she’s not plotting a dog heist she’s gaming or adventuring.

Set mostly in China during and after the Cultural Revolution, Geling Yan presents us with unforgettable characters who have all, in one way or another, left home. Taking as her territory the disorienting space between home and away, Yan charts the unexpected transformation of her characters as they find themselves thrust into unlikely intimacy with strangers who embody different histories and different desires. • www.auntlute.com/white-snake • #GelingYan #WhiteSnake #novella #culturalrevolution #shortstory #queerlit #chineseamerican #literature

“I was so stunned with the layered language and powerful storytelling in “flesh to bone”. The stories completely uprooted and expanded my idea of what can be possible through writing and interpretations of ancestral knowledge and how myth is woven throughout our daily life and understandings of self. The book made me hungry for the myths of my own ancestors, and prompted me to reflect on how myth is continuously present, and projected over my relationship to my people and my land as an Indigenous person.” • 2 MORE DAYS! “Leela Fernandes’ Transforming Feminist Practice Gabe me the possibility of feminism as an embodied experience of living differently and mindfully instead of an academic exercise sequestered in an ivory tower. Her reclamation’s of non-hierarchical, non-weaponized spirituality that centers empathy and relationality and her calls for a feminist collective revolution of values were (and are) a powerful antidote in the defensive cynicism I developed as protection in the face of the otherwise-overwhelming prospect of enacting change.” • 3 days left... but you don’t have to wait. This is a story about Detroit in the late fifties/early sixties and the Black Women and men who came North to work the lines of the Ford Motor plant. It’s a story about John R. Street, the Harlem of Detroit, where they spent their nights trying to forget their days—at the Frolic and Flame Showbars, playing Mr. Ben’s numbers, sitting on stoops reminiscing about the days of their youth in the South. Irreverent and poetic, this dating novel explores relationships among Black women of different generations and places who, above all, reach each other how to survive—not on men or money but on the courage to move a long ways in tight spaces. How does it feel to be a black woman in South Africa? Published in 1985, "Call Me Woman" details life during the past 50 years in South Africa. Like millions of black South Africans made strangers in the land of their birth, Ellen Kuzwayo has lost a great deal in her lifetime: the farm in the Orange Free State which had belonged to her family for nearly a hundred years; her hopes for a full and peaceful life for her children; even her own freedom, when, at the age of 63, she found herself detained under the so-called Terrorism Act for an offence never specified. But she has not lost her courage. • 🔖🔖🔖 Small Press Distribution is running a sale for Black History Month.
