I'm going to conclude coming-of-age week with the most recent bildungsroman I've read 🔖 *The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian* by Sherman Alexie was a book I picked up earlier this year because someone told me it was a definitive YA coming-of-age story 📚 I really enjoyed it, the balance of humour and sadness, joy and failure was very dynamic 😂😭 Sherman Alexie has written a fantastic coming-of-age story with plenty of emotional staying power. The Inconvenient Indian

             I'm intrigued by this book, especially in concert with the Louise Erdrich and Sherman Alexie I have on tap. I enjoyed the Alexie-penned SMOKE SIGNALS very much when I watched it in a course on Westerns, not least because it underlined how facile the "difference" is between films like THE SEARCHERS and films like DANCES WITH WOLVES when it comes to portraying Native Americans (also looking at you, James Cameron). 

One of the last books I finished before starting this project notes that 90% of the population of Mexico (over 20 million strong at the time) was killed by smallpox within 100 years of European contact, after a single inflected slave from Cuba introduced the virus in 1520.
