I wanted to put my own unique spin on the fated mates trope in my dark fantasy novel, Academy of Villains, so I created the concept of a "Heartstring"—a thread of fate binding two souls together. This idea draws from the concept of Twin Flames and is inspired by Greek mythology, particularly Plato's Symposium, where humans were once beings with two faces, four arms, and four legs. Fearing their power, Zeus split them in half, leaving each to search for their other half for eternity. In my story, Twin Flames embody the Heartstring bond, an eternal connection that transcends time and space.

In Academy of Villains, when characters discover their Heartstring, they face a choice: they can accept the bond, gaining extraordinary abilities that grow stronger as they connect, or they can sever it. But severing isn’t without consequence. When a Heartstring is rejected, one of the bonded is destined to die—a fate as inevitable as it is unpredictable, as neither bonded soul knows which of them will be chosen by death.
