The reason LCD screens use RGB instead of just RB has less to do with the color spectrum and more to do with how we perceive light. Although light is technically a one-dimensional spectrum, we perceive it as a wheel because of the way our photoreceptors (the light sensors in our eyes) react.

We have two types of photoreceptors, rods and cones. Cones register intensity and rods each react to a certain band of light, red green or blue.

Now here’s where things get interesting. Have you ever noticed how purple comes after blue in a rainbow? According to color theory, purple is a mix of red and blue. If we were to plot it on a linear color line, it would be in the middle of the two. But we can’t do that, because that’s where green goes. So our brains made up purple to differentiate red+blue from halfway between the two wavelengths. Ergo, the color wheel.

A really annoying question has ocured to me and tyrying to serch for an answer just gets me slop and colour theory. So all visible light every possible colour falls somewhere on a 2 point scale between just shy of infra-red, and just short of ultra-violet, by definition. The spectrum of visible light has no fork.

So why do computers, which output visible light determined by a numerical scale use RBG not RB? Why 3 values o place a huge and not simply how far along it is on the spectum of increasingly shortened wavelenghts? I get that human eyes register cilour unevenly across that spectum, but the pure electro mechanical output shouldnt be influenced my that, you want a given hue you emit photos of a given wavelenght, and we perceve that hue (allowing for issues like colour blindness any way). So why complicate things with a third value?
