the beauty of language is unparalleled because you can say "reluctantly" in Italian as "malincuore", which literally translates to "with pain in my heart"
and as i translate some bloodflowers dialogue the word for crown (referring to the highest point on the head) is "spirale", but it can also be referred to as "bobina" which translates to coil. the sentence, "...the turpentine sillage from her crown", would translate to, "...di trementina sillage della sua bobina." (the turpentine smell from her coil).
a "coil" relating to female anatomy is akin to that of birth control, and i like to make that analogy of bell being mother mary to adler who lacks a state of grace from his guilt/his anima, and the fact that bell is adler's "placenta" or "the afterbirth"
it's also a projection of adler and his own fatherhood, of which he neglects his child and is a bad dad due to his own trauma, so the scent is just a bad reminder of the things he's /trying/ to leave behind, yet the only evidence he has of his mistakes

adler petting bell whenever he can. adler grabbing bell by the scruff. adler pushing her hair away from her face. adler getting close enough to smell her hair. adler making the hairs on her neck stand up because he knows what makes her tick and he loves that power over her.

he didn’t tell them, and he never planned to. in actuality, bell dying in that explosion would've been the luckiest thing to happen. they feared bell wouldn’t survive, adler feared that she would.
and she did.

adler having this weird fatal attraction to bell because he grew a savior complex and thinks that just because he remolded bell that means she's his so he has to defend all her wrongs but simultaneously has to hate her for working with his number 1 enemy

ZORK & Pawn Takes Pawn (& how it foreshadowed everything).
So recently I hooked up my PS4 again and went on Cold War to play the campaign for the millionth time, and decided to do some more Easter egg exploring. Of these Easter eggs, I found the BO1 terminal in the storage room. I knew this computer existed but I never knew what you could use it for, so I went on google and looked it up. I found out you can play this ‘text-based adventure game’ called ZORK, published in ‘81 and so on. At first glance I didn’t think anything of it because, whatever, it's just an 80′s game for fun! Until I did some more hunting: the game was used to market the Cold War campaign. Not only that, but it's referenced that the game was used as a build up to the campaign. Anyway, as I was testing out ZORK on the terminal through a video guide, when I realized something a little too coincidental.
To play ZORK you have to use commands, these include directional keywords such as north, south, east, west, up, down, climb, enter, jump, and so on. What I noticed is how similar the choices you could make were parallel to ‘Break on Through’, the mission where you play as Bell to find the Bunker/the location of the nukes. Both are set as an adventure based game, ZORK specifically being “the player explores the abandoned Great Underground Empire in search of treasure.” In ‘Break on Through’, we are also exploring the many scenarios before us, able to pursue any path we want despite Adler’s commands. We can go left or right, travel the waterfall or the caves, cross the bridge or the zipline; and with ZORK it's all the same. Through the tunnels or the secret cellar, into the house by window or door, up or down, left or right. Sure, both could just be exploring the same gaming medium with the 'choose your own adventure/path', it's one of the most used systems overall, but another theme I discovered was its use of color.
In ZORK, you are able to control your character and choices through actions. These actions are identified with colors, or just colors that correspond to the action apropos. In the ‘Break on Through’ sequences, and just in general, the main color theme is red. Whether it be the blaring red bunker door, the Soviet Union flag, or the flashbacks in-between sequences. In ZORK, the combat action is identified with "red". Commonly, when Adler and Park are side by side, they contrast between red (Adler's side) and blue (Park's side). In ZORK, the manipulate action is identified with "blue". However, the term manipulate in the context of ZORK is different, as it simply means to control something, like an 'opening' action. I may be reaching even further with this one, but the white color coding in ZORK is when a command is not understood, and often Bell has white outs during the sequence, where she can disobey Adler's word. Or, Bell is in such a state of disarray, she wouldn't be able to articulate or understand what was happening to her.
My next connection is the message left when you complete ZORK or obtain all the achievements on the Pawn Takes Pawn website, which states:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In all honesty, this could be applying mainly to the Dark Aether storyline, and I could be totally wrong about this. But, c'mon, the coincidences are right there. Think about it, “It’s pitch black. Just like the operations that happen in secret everyday…”, does that not sound like the entirety of the group, primarily Adler, Park, Hudson, and Black, revamping MKUltra despite its horrid history? I mean, the goddamn project showed no signs of success for the two decades it occured, and even its Poisoner in Chief, Sidney Gottlieb, admitted so himself. Why the Hell would they think to bring it back? I honestly believe this may have been a developing error as MKUltra ceased operations well in the 70’s. It could be counterintuitive to just assume they found a way to really make the brainwashing work, hence the whole ‘establishing a personal relationship’, which is new to the whole brainwashing dig. All MKUltra really was (to my research) mass amounts of LSD, numerous torture methods, and etc. But even the ‘it’s pitch black’ has meaning to it. Emerson Black, the headliner of the group's operations, the CIA’s Deputy Strategist. Emerson Black, who headlined the missions as strategic deputy and was hush-hush with Hudson Abt Op. Greenlight? He literally puts the Black in Black Ops, created specifically for this game. I mean, they couldn’t have used Weaver, that’d been a swell comeback wouldn’t it? He was in the Dark Aether storyline of course, but… C’MON.
Also, the slip is pink, and the color pink in ZORK means a specialty command (specifically ‘pray’). It makes reference to Ulysses, who is mentioned in the game against the Cyclops, and is the father of his enemy, who is commonly known as Odysseus. Odysseus is the hero of Homer’s Odyssey, and as Study.com would put it, “Odysseus crafted the plan that destroyed the city of Troy and ended the Trojan War.” Sounds a lot like a couple individuals in the Black Ops series, right? Even Cyclops has significance as the one eyed monster, to which A LOT of people in the series, Black Ops or Modern Warfare, are missing an eye. Odysseus is the one who stabs him in the eye. The loss of an eye isn’t just based on character design, but a test of loyalty, primarily Kravchenko performing these mutilations. For Weaver, both Woods and Adler avenge him by killing Kravchenko or stabbing Stitch in the eye, both loyal to their mutual companion; then with Peck it was a test of his loyalty toward Kravchenko; and back to Stitch after Adler poked his own eye out, who was then sent to the Gulag by Kravchenko for his failures. All have a mutual enemy, and even Bell herself has a connection to Kravchenko because of Stitch (at least former connections). To further my point, just look at this achievement:
Tumblr media
And to stay on the topic of appreciatively named achievements, just take a look at this one, which parallels the eleventh mission of Cold War:
Tumblr media
Further on, my next two connections are the Pawn, the Statue of Liberty card, and Pawn Takes Pawn video teasers. The pawn is an obvious reference to the website Pawn Takes Pawn, where the entire video series and clues are parallels to events in the Black Ops series, which conclude to, SPOILER ALERT, Bowman's son being the mysterious face behind it all, William Bowman. Most scenes in the video show campaign teasers, including foreshadowing to the Seasons to come with the Verdansk story, etc. I was literally vibrating at my discoveries, and how I coincidentally tied my Bell, Lorelei, into a specific letter in the game, signed by a woman named Tatyana, who has the same name as my Bell’s mother.
Tumblr media
Returning to the main point, the purpose of a pawn is defined as ‘a person used by others for their own purposes’, and is the weakest piece in chess. Again, this can be applied to a lot of Black Ops characters, but in context I’m mainly focusing on Bell. Bell was Adler’s pawn, manipulated on his chest board of war against Perseus, and even vice versa. Perseus’ pawn was captured by Adler: pawn takes pawn. Also, I might be reaching with this one, but in the COD comics, Adler is referred to as ‘The Fifth Knight’. A Knight is also a piece on the chessboard, and works in an ‘L’ path to possess a pawn or rook. The significance of ‘L’ stands within our lovely Lady Liberty and the Liberty Bell. The way we choose our Bell's can be based on these two symbols of freedom, the female bell as Lady Liberty, the Liberty Bell as male Bell, or our non-binary Bell as both (which seems contradictory). Lady Liberty dawn's a new green visage after her oxidation for years, and green is used as the color for Bell's balaclava and gloves (male Bell specifically, also returning to that color theory). The Liberty Bell, known for its crack, is another symbol of freedom (off but on topic, it's very ironic that its location is within the Hudson river). Its crack was caused from its first ring, and to compare this to our Bell, we know that normal interrogation methods weren't doing jack with them, but if you listen very closely to when they start talking about MKUltra, and pay attention, you can hear the sharp pitch of a ringing followed by the flashes of a tiny bell. Bell 'cracked' during their conditioning and brainwashing. Of course, the Statue of Liberty card could’ve just been there for a taste of ‘patriotism’, considering that's what the game is all about, but the very first thing we see in the beginning of Cold War, is very simply:
Tumblr media
Call me far-fetched.. But… C’MONNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!??!?!?!! There is no such thing as a coincidence. I mean, how the Hell did I manage to connect some random woman to Bell’s mom before I even knew about this video? Tatyana is a common name in Russia but let me indulge, okay? To wrap this up, analyzing the video of William Bowman’s reveal, he talks about us, the viewer, breaking codes and hacking into computers; sneaking into train stations and going to numerous places like Miami and Moscow. These could be references to the multiplayer maps, but the train station is pretty significant here, since its location is used within ‘Brick in the Wall’, the fifth mission of Cold War.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hacking part is pretty self-explanatory: Bell is a cryptographer. “You stopped short of nothing: hacking into old computers and retrieving classified transmissions, intercepting communications through the mail … You cracked emails and dialed into secured networks to retrieve classified intelligence.”
Tumblr media
Her (indulgence of my personal Bell having she/her pronouns) abilities to hack into databases is a very important factor of her character, as she helps transfer data, break into systems, and fixes missions for Mason & Woods. Those missions are referenced within the video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“You took to the trail quickly. Firing up old projectors and shining a light on classified intelligence, traveling to the Ural mountains in search of answers.” Projectors are used in every single mission debrief, even one is accessible to use in the safehouse of the Cuban Debriefing. As for the mountains… Where else but Yamantau?
Tumblr media
“You even took command of choppers to uncover the details of fallen soldiers and brave heroes that come to the rescue.” It’s not a shocker that, yeah, helicopters are the common form of transportation in the military. There’s a helicopter in every single mission of the game, I shit you not. You might not see it, but you can sure as Hell hear those blades slicing the air. In ‘Fracture Jaw’, you are able to control the helicopter to attack the outposts. Now my connection, and probably not that jaw dropping (wink), is that the type of Helicopters used during the Vietnam War were nicknamed ‘Huey's’, also known as Bell UH-1 Iroquois.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To conclude this very long rant that is three years overdue because I'm late to every party, I am frothing at the mouth from these videos and will continue to hyperfixate violently on BO:CW until I fucking die.

MACBETH & ADLERBELL PARALLELS
Okay so hi it's three in the morning and I have another little brain worm. So as you may know I made a parallel post already to Macbeth and AdlerBell, but I actually wanted to go more in-depth with it. So I highlighted some parts of the dagger speech (that I totally haven't memorized), that highlight Adler in general and my own personal take on Adler as a character.
Tumblr media
The famous dagger speech as Macbeth contemplates whether he should kill Duncan or not. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Well, this could parallel Adler's last moments with Bell. Not only can the dagger symbolize Bell herself ("A dagger of the mind, a false creation"), but how he has to decide to tie up some loose ends. I mean, did he really have to kill Bell? Well, if we're talking canonical Bell, they could have still had resentment for Adler despite the Solovetsky ending, and Adler decided he didn't need a revenge story or another obstacle on his neverending mission to destroy Perseus. And as Macbeth does to Duncan, Adler does to Bell and kills them, just for different reasons in general. Macbeth did it for prophecy and the throne, Adler did it because he needed to move on with his thirteen year mission. Both did it out of selfishness.
(Mind you, besides all this, MKUltra was declassified in '73, and an archive of the nearly destroyed files were uncovered from an FOIA. They say that Bell was a 'guinea pig for CIA's MKUltra', yet the project had been completely eviscerated and still very illegal. It's unknown how they were even allowed to bring the experiment back, but this can play into the whole 'loose-ends' reasoning).
Now that I've covered Adler's part as Macbeth, I began wondering where Bell could fit into the role of Lady Macbeth (specifically my own Bell, since Bell is generally GN and unlike most OC Bell's). Personally, my Bell v. Lady Macbeth vary because my Bell supports all of Adler's wrongdoings and is his ride or die (she's the babygirl fr), and so does Lady Macbeth; however she often emasculates Macbeth due to his apprehension to kill Duncan in the first place and even after he killed him. Then I compared Lady Macbeth's own speech to my Bell.
Tumblr media
Not only can this small proportion equal both the contemplation of Bell's murder and Bell as the dagger before Adler, but can be referenced to Adler's future brainwashing, or his present madness and determination ("The heat-oppressed mind.")
With Bell being Adler's protege, she'd obviously do what he commands as his loyal agent no matter how macabre. Bell and Lady Macbeth's actions parallel, because despite their support of the wrongdoings of their mentally ill s/o's, they still hold guilt and regret for their actions. Then, I realized why Lady Macbeth felt guilt for Duncan's death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this I decided I was completely in tune with the universe, because now I've realized Duncan can also resemble Perseus. Perseus is the one at the throne to which Adler needs to overthrow, yet he isn't doing it for power. Lady Macbeth says that if Duncan did not resemble her dad she would have killed him herself, and if we reread this in the perspective of my Bell, this is what you get.

Blazkowicz' father. Even their names parallel each other (Bell's father's name is Jet, B.J. 's father's name is Rip. Plus their personalities are super super different, they're just both alcoholics and I wanted to copy his mustache). I did this even before I read Macbeth, and let me tell you how much I geeked when I was able to connect the parallels perfectly.

I rest my case. Goodnight.
