Though I’m not too big on scary things, I do enjoy the lesser scary activities like curling up on the couch and watching Hocus Pocus, seeing all the cool ideas that people come up with their costumes and think to myself, “Dang, I wish I would have come up with that one”, and lastly stuffing my face with tons and TONS of sweet delicious treats! Yesterday I mentioned that I was going to post a tutorial on how I got this really great faux gold leaf effect in Photoshop and today you’ll learn how to do it as well. I chose this effect because I wanted to try something new to give my new prints that umph that I was longing for. As I searched for tutorials to help me achieve that beautiful gold foil look, I came across a really simple tutorial by RetroSupply. This tutorial really caught my eye because instead of using a already made gold leaf texture you created your own from scratch, which I found really cool.

I’ve always loved gold leaf effects but the process and cost of getting the real thing can be a bit of a pain. So, the next best thing is to create a gold leaf effect yourself in Photoshop.

Yes, yes, I know you’re probably saying, “Charlie why not just go find a gold leaf texture...why create one yourself?”. For one you won’t have to worry about if it’s safe to use for commercial use. Since you created it yourself you can use if for whatever you like. Secondly, you have control over what you want your gold leaf to look (lighter or darker gold) and so on.

For this tutorial some knowledge of Photoshop would be helpful, but this video tutorial by RetroSupply is very easy to follow along. I actually used an older version of Photoshop, CS5 to be exact, and I accomplished really great results.

I feel like I say I’m so excited all the time, but for reaaaal real real...I’m super excited to show you all a sneak peek of the new prints I’ll be putting in my store (BTT Prints on Etsy).

The process was a lot of fun. I started OFF the computer with these prints. I used paint, yes REAL paint, to get these great paint stroke textures. After that I scanned them to my computer and finessed it in Adobe Photoshop.

Hey, hey, heeeey...

I wanted to show some of my progress and process for some things I have been working on for the new printables for my store BTT Prints on Etsy.

This time around I wanted to try something a bit different with hand drawn elements and piecing them together in Adobe Photoshop. You can see some of the elements I came with and in the frames you can see how I pieced them together in a very simple and clean way.

If you’re a Photoshop or Illustrator user I urge you get off your computer and try using paints, markers, or whatever else materials to get you out your comfort zone and explore new techniques. I was a bit hesitant at first, but I ended up having lots of fun creating with something other than a mouse.

I can’t wait to show you the finals. So, look out for those.

The struggle is REAL, but WE can do it!

Ya'll, it has been a really tough week and a really crazy morning for me. I've been so stressed and overwhelmed with personal things, thinking about what I want to do with not only my life but also this blog. With the start up of my Etsy shop...sheesh I am exhausted.

With exhaustion comes doubt and feeling like what I'm doing is worthless or stupid. You start thinking maybe I'm doing the wrong thing and I should just throw up that white flag and call it quits. Maybe I bit off more than I can chew! MAYBE just maybe I'm not talented enough or intelligent enough to do all things that that I dream about.

It's like can I even do this? Maybe this idea was silly. Maybe I can't do or be what I want to be...

That's exactly how I was feeling this whole week and def this morning. Snot and tears streaming down my face as I screamed at the top of my lungs that I can't do this. That maybe it was a mistake for me to think that I could.

As I scrolled through some of my old work I came across this design quote I made a year or two ago. And it just made me realize how when you were a kid you knew you could do it all and have it all. Why is it when we get older we feel the total opposite? I want to go back to that childlike mindset where I knew that if I wanted to be unicorn I damn sure could!

This is not a reminder for not only myself, but you too. Yes, we are going to have days where we are like "Oh heck nah I'm DONE!" But when you do try to remember that kid that knew that they could do it all and DO IT! Live out your destiny and make those dreams a REALITY.
